SCHOLARSHIP
PURPOSE
The members of the Epsilon Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Portsmouth, Virginia, created a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to a graduating high school senior/s who will be entering college as a full-time student in the fall immediately following their senior year. Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 or $1,000 will be awarded to a deserving student/s who has demonstrated academic ability, community involvement, leadership qualities and exemplary character. Payment will be made directly to the institution that the student will be attending that fall.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. The applicant must be an African American male.
2. The applicant must have earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application submission.
3. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior from a Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake or Suffolk, Virginia high school.
4. The Scholarship Committee will require verification that the applicant has been accepted to an accredited four year college or university prior to tendering scholarship funds to that college or university.
5. The applicant must provide two letters of reference. One letter must be from an academic staff member (teacher, guidance counselor, or administrator) from the applicant’s high school who is familiar with the applicant’s academic abilities and school activities. The second letter should be from a community leader or someone who has directly managed the student, for example in a place of employment (not related to the applicant or the applicant’s family) such as a minister, youth group leader, employment supervisor or political leader who knows the applicant well.
6. The applicant must have proven demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities. This can include school and community affairs.
7. The applicant must submit an essay containing a minimum of 300 written words on the following topic: The Black and Blue Divide – “Are race relationships between the African American community and law enforcement able to be healed?”
8. Recipients of this year’s scholarship(s) will be required to attend the Epsilon Nu Lambda’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., scholarship breakfast to be held on January 20, 2018, from 9 am until 12:00 Noon at the Edmonds Center, Portsmouth, VA. Each recipient will receive 3 complimentary tickets (one for himself and two for his invited guests). Failure to attend the breakfast will disqualify scholarship eligibility. In addition, upon notification, winner/s of the 2018 scholarship will be required to submit a picture (preferably your high school graduation picture) of himself that will be included in the breakfast program’s souvenir journal.
9. Award recipients must notify the scholarship committee, in writing, by July 16, 2018 of their post-secondary school of choice, or the award will be forfeited
APPLICATION PROCEDURES The applicant must do the following:
1. Submit the original copy of a completed application form to the address listed below. Type written applications are preferred or the application must be neat and legibly printed .
2. Have the letters of reference, mailed directly by the individuals making the recommendation to the address listed below.
3. Have his official high school transcript(s) submitted to the address listed below.
4. Submit all materials (application, transcript(s), letters of recommendation, essay) by November 27, 2017 (materials must be received or postmarked). Materials must be mailed to the following address:

Failure to adhere to the stated guidelines will disqualify an applicant. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
The recipient will be selected by the scholarship committee using the following criteria:
• Academic Ability • Community Involvement • Leadership Ability • School Activities • Letters of Recommendation • The Essay
The criteria will be given equal weight in the selection process.
NOTIFICATION
The winning recipient(s) will be notified of their selection by December 22, 2017, via U. S. mail.
