    Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning of Spoken Dialogue Strategies Dave Toney I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Communicating and Collaborative Systems School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2007 Abstract From a system developer’s perspective, designing a spoken dialogue system can be a time-consuming and difficult process. A developer may spend a lot of time anticipating how a potential user might interact with the system and then deciding on the most appropriate system response. These decisions are encoded in a dialogue strategy, essentially a mapping between anticipated user inputs and appropriate system outputs. To reduce the time and effort associated with developing a dialogue strategy, recent work has concentrated on modelling the development of a dialogue strategy as a sequential decision problem. Using this model, reinforcement learning algorithms have been employed to generate dialogue strategies automatically. These algorithms learn strategies by interacting with simulated users. Some progress has been made with this method but a number of important challenges remain. For instance, relatively little success has been achieved with the large state representations that are typical of real- life systems. Another crucial issue is the time and effort associated with the creation of simulated users. In this thesis, I propose an alternative to existing reinforcement learning methods of dialogue strategy development. More specifically, I explore how XCS, an evolutionary reinforcement learning algorithm, can be used to find dialogue strategies that cover large state spaces. Furthermore, I suggest that hand-coded simulated users are sufficient for the learning of useful dialogue strategies.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 The height-keeping performance of aircraft is a key element in ensuring the safe operations of RVSM airspace. The RVSM height monitoring standards are considered the minimum requirement needed to maintain the safety of operations in the RVSM designated airspace. 1.2 Upon changes to ICAO Annex 6, Operation of Aircraft, Parts I & II, applicable on 18 November 2010, the following standard was adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO): 7.2.7 The State of the Operator that has issued an RVSM approval to an operator shall establish a requirement which ensures that a minimum of two aeroplanes of each aircraft type grouping of the operator have their height-keeping performance monitored, at least once every two years or within intervals of 1000 flight hours per aeroplane, whichever period is longer. If an operator aircraft type grouping consists of a single aeroplane, monitoring of that aeroplane shall be accomplished within the specified period.

Aer Lingus beförderte im Februar 668.000 Fluggäste. Dies sind 8,4 % weniger als im Vorjahresmonat. Auf Langstrecken begrüßte Aer Lingus nur 68.000 Passagiere an Bord, was einem Rückgang von 11,7 % entspricht. Auf europäischen Strecken stiegen 620.000 Fluggäste ein – ebenfalls ein Rückgang um 8 %. Aer Lingus reduzierte die Kapazitäten drastisch und konnte so die Auslastung der Flugzeuge im Schnitt von 72,1 % auf 77,5 % steigern. Die Langstreckenflotte war nur zu 64 % gefüllt. Aer Lingus übernahm einen neuen A330-300E (EI-EAV, msn 985). Air Baltic richtet zum 1. Juni Nonstopflüge zwischen Riga und Dushanbe ein. 2x wöchentlich (Mo, Fr) wird eine Boeing 737 eingesetzt. Damit ist airBaltic die einzige EU-Airline, die die Hauptstadt Tadschikistans anfliegt. Im Sommer wird zudem auch der litaische Kurort Palanga 12x wöchentlich mit Fokker 50 ab Riga angesteuert. Weitere neue Ziele sind Tromsö (4x wöch.) und Linköping (6x wöch.). Außerdem steigert airBaltic die Flugfrequenzen auf mehr als 20 Strecken u.a. auch nach Düsseldorf (6x wöch.) und Hamburg (10x wöch.). Tallinn, Vilnius und Helsinki werden künftig bis zu 7x täglich bedient. Nach der Winterpause werden auch Odessa, Simferopol und Almaty wieder in den Flugplan aufgenommen. Air Berlin beförderte im Februar 1,71 Millionen Fluggäste. Das sind 8,5 % weniger als im Vorjahresmonat. Die Beförderungskapazitäten wurden um 6,3 % gesenkt. Die Auslastung der Flugzeuge sank dadurch um 1,7 Prozentpunkte auf 70,8 %.
