The overcapacity for both, components and vehicles, took its toll at that time, and the situation is starting to repeat itself today. In the case of Spain, it is estimated that the automotive sector will not recover until 2020, when the theoretical volume of the Spanish automotive sector will again be reached, namely 1.2 million units, corresponding to a market of 47 million inhabitants and more than 600 cars for every 1,000 people. In Europe, the situation is far from rosy. Sales have failed to recover and are falling in most countries, which results in over-production of around 4 million vehicles despite the cuts made. The only way that companies can absorb this overcapacity is to once more cut back to match demand and to continue focussing on internationalisation, given that the world automotive market will grow at an annual rate of 4% in both 2012 and 2013, despite the ongoing decline in Europe. However, the European situation is in contrast to the good growth being maintained in other countries such as those known as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the United States. Sales in the US have been recovering somewhat despite the relative weakness of its economic recovery, but it is the growth in the Asia-Pacific region that dominates the panorama in terms of the demand for vehicles internationally. We are therefore experiencing an important shift in the production and demand of cars toward new growing economies. A new global scenario that has modified the strategies of the automakers and suppliers and to which Grupo Antolin is continuously adapting given its flexibility and its organic and inorganic growth rate. Our significant international presence, along with our technological leadership and flexibility, allow us to serve our customers all around the world. The European Investment Bank (EIB) has recently granted us a loan of €70 million, which will be invested in research, development and innovation for interior components. This loan will undoubtedly help with our technological strength and represents an important investment in terms of the future success of the company. The project financed by the EIB can be divided into two parts: firstly, it will finance R&D&i initiatives to develop components; secondly, the project will include investment in the application of technologies to increase the productivity and flexibility of our plants, reduce their process costs and improve their energy efficiency. The EIB requires these plants to be located in the Convergence Regions, and as a result the money will be invested in certain factories in Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic. Grupo Antolin has shown its strength and robustness even in times of economic uncertainty. Despite the fact that the economic conditions continue to be complicated, we have to keep focussing on quality and on a job well done at the international level if we are to continue being competitive. w News Grupo Antolin Autumn 2012 · 3 Through the development of its brand, the city of Burgos wants to portray a new image in terms of tourism, culture, business and quality of life, so strengthening its standing both nationally and internationally.
