AUTO-ANALYSIS

In 2007 there was a slowdown in the international economy and this had a direct impact on the . The overcapacity for both, components and vehicles, took its toll at that time, and the situation is starting to repeat itself today.

In the case of Spain, it is estimated that the automotive sector will not recover until 2020, when the theoretical volume of the Spanish automotive sector will again be reached, namely 1.2 million units, corresponding to a market of 47 million inhabitants and more than 600 cars for every 1,000 people.

In Europe, the situation is far from rosy. Sales have failed to recover and are falling in most countries, which results in over-production of around 4 million vehicles despite the cuts made. The only way that companies can absorb this overcapacity is to once more cut back to match demand and to continue focussing on internationalisation, given that the world automotive market will grow at an annual rate of 4% in both 2012 and 2013, despite the ongoing decline in Europe.

However, the European situation is in contrast to the good growth being maintained in other countries such as those known as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and the United States. Sales in the US have been recovering somewhat despite the relative weakness of its economic recovery, but it is the growth in the Asia-Pacific region that dominates the panorama in terms of the demand for vehicles internationally.

We are therefore experiencing an important shift in the production and demand of cars toward new growing economies. A new global scenario that has modified the strategies of the automakers and suppliers and to which Grupo Antolin is continuously adapting given its flexibility and its organic and inorganic growth rate. Our significant international presence, along with our technological leadership and flexibility, allow us to serve our customers all around the world.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has recently granted us a loan of €70 million, which will be invested in research, development and innovation for interior components. This loan will undoubtedly help with our technological strength and represents an important investment in terms of the future success of the company.

The project financed by the EIB can be divided into two parts: firstly, it will finance R&D&i initiatives to develop components; secondly, the project will include investment in the application of technologies to increase the productivity and flexibility of our plants, reduce their process costs and improve their energy efficiency. The EIB requires these plants to be located in the Convergence Regions, and as a result the money will be invested in certain factories in Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic.

Grupo Antolin has shown its strength and robustness even in times of economic uncertainty. Despite the fact that the economic conditions continue to be complicated, we have to keep focussing on quality and on a job well done at the international level if we are to continue being competitive. w

This results in less severe injuries and consequently fewer deaths from side collision traffic accidents

For the research and development work they have collaborated with five technology centres: Fundación Cidaut, TECN”ALIA, Fatronik, Cedetel and Gaiker, three public research bodies: University of Valladolid, University of Santiago de Compostela and IMSE, and a private university, University of Navarra.

The car predicts the crash and prepares for it using intel- ligent and adaptive systems. To this end, ADAPTA has ad- dressed three important technological challenges:

· Systems for the Detection and Classification of the area around the vehicle, for ’Pre-Crash’ detection. An interior and exterior vision system and an expert decision making system have been developed for this.

· Structural features in the car to better manage side crashes: additional protection systems have been includ- ed in the vehicle’s door.

· Retention Systems to offer greater protection for the oc- cupants, which include interior and exterior airbags, es- pecially adapted for side collisions.

end user Benchmarking

Industrial Design Department Grupo Antolin-Ingenieria

To keep developing and being competitive, we need to know what the end users of our products think. When we use the term end user we are generally talking about the people buying vehicles. However, it must be borne in mind that the end user is not just the person buying the vehicle, as end users also include the passengers and potential customers. Their opinion of our products affects their overall view about the vehicle and, therefore, it is important to know what they think so that we can improve our products, update them, meet customer needs and provide value where it is really appreciated by the user

News Grupo Antolin 22 · Autumn 2012 Images from some of the end user benchmarking sessions held in Grupo Antolin Headquarters, for both individual products and the complete vehicle

For the Industrial Design Department, this relationship with the end user has always been very important and has been part of the work carried out. We use different tools and studies to help us try to understand everything related to the emotional side, as well as subjective aspects of the product. At Grupo Antolin we have introduced a new methodology for end user Benchmarking. It allows us to analyse anything from an individual product to a complete vehicle. In the studies we have carried out to date, more than 100 people have visited Grupo Antolin’s Central Offices. When the required profile is that of a young user, we ask students at the University of Burgos to help out. To date more than 40 students have been involved. Their responses are also important given that they are people from outside the automotive sector.

Images of the end user benchmarking session held on the Among the studies carried out it is worth highlighting the Skylight headliner in GANA with American users end user Benchmarking for the Skylight Headliner, first carried out in GA’s central offices, to find out what people think of this very new product. It is a new product still not available in the market, and so the results of a study of this type can give us an idea of the way it would be received. More than 50 people have come to analyse the headliner and a replica of the study has taken place in Grupo Antolin North-America to find out what the Americans think of it. We can tell you now that the view of the product has been very satisfactory in both countries.

Since we are in a globalised world and operate internationally, the most interesting challenge is finding out the opinion of other cultures and countries.

The results and conclusions obtained in these studies have to be used as information to complement the objective and technical data. At the Industrial Design Department we believe that this is a powerful innovation tool, a source of information on final customers and great support for Images of the end user benchmarking session held on the Skylight headliner in the commercial activity. w GA-Headquarters, with Spanish users
