Maja Trochimczyk History in Song: Maria Szymanowska and Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz’s Śpiewy historyczne They were read, they were sung; ladies contributed to this decora- tive edition with their drawings and music; girls learned the songs by heart and, in this way, they loved, they learned the country’s history […] Nobody dared not to know Niemcewicz’s book and to admit that they did not know the history of their homeland. With these words, Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski captured the enormous impact of Niemcewicz’s Śpiewy historyczne on Pol- ish culture. In my study, I will focus on the music, created for all 33 chants by a group of amateur and professional composers, including Maria Szymanowska. This monumental and patriotic poetry collection was written by a poet, politician, educator, jour- nalist, and freedom fighter, Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758–1841) who was also a deputy to the Four-Year Seym, a member of the Patriotic Party, a leading advocate of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, Tadeusz Kościuszko’s right hand during the 1794 Insurrec- tion, a member of governments in the Duchy of Warsaw, the Con- gress Kingdom and the November Uprising, and the president of the Society of Friends of Learning in Warsaw (1827–1831). Niemcewicz’s educational approach to history was the prima- ry reason for the design and content of Śpiewy historyczne where each of the 33 poems was accompanied by an essay (Przydatki do śpiewu…) explaining its historical background. Each poem was also set to music and illustrated with an engraving of a no- table scene from the life of its hero. -

Heart Of Genius by Janusz Ekiert In the one hundred fifty years since Chopin's death, opinions on this great composer, his life, his works and their interpretation changed, sometimes even going from one extreme to the other. Despite of the admiration, worship and enchantment the audience felt for him both at his lifetime and now, his genius and personal affairs were seen differently by people, who met him, by fin-de-siècle people, by those living at the time between the two world wars and by contemporary people. Despite the universal respect and love of his genius, for a long time the power of his originality remained unappreciated or was treated as eccentricity. At the time of withering Romanticism his works were often interpreted as if composed by a hysteric dying by stages without end. The reaction that followed World War I, anti-subjective aesthetics, the search for the so-called faithfulness to the author, and for the original texts free of editorial insertions, performing only what's included in the schematic and limited musical notation, the maxims of not playing Chopin too loud, too low, too rapid, too slow, too lively or too dull, all these reduced the sensation, enchantment, style and imagination, and brought about stereotyped interpretations of his compositions. In Romanticism people tended to insert some literary contents and true or concocted stories into his works and life. His later biographers and students earnestly and meticulously rid his music and life of those embellishments, making light of them and thus going to the other extreme of untruth. -

Postmaster General John E. Potter has asked the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to review the proposal to create a stamp for Lt. Col. Matt Urban. Urban (1919-1995) was an Army officer who served with distinction in World War II. He was belatedly award- ed the Medal of Honor, in 1980 for repeated acts of hero- ism in combat in France and Belgium in 1944. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he is the most Celebrating Chopin decorated American serviceman. Previous attempts to create a stamp for Urban were turned down by the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Commit- tee, the group which evaluates all stamp proposals. Approximately 25 new subjects for commemorative stamps are recommended each year. “Should the Committee decide to place the proposal under consideration, it will be added to the pool of can- didates for upcoming years,” said Potter. A stamp for Urban, born Matty Louis Urbanowicz, in Buffalo, N.Y. -

Widok znany był dotąd jedynie ze spisu prac Marcina Zaleskiego prezentowanych w 1836 roku na wystawie sztuk pięknych w Pałacu Kazimierzowskim2. Prawdopodobnie był pokazywany jesz- cze raz w 1838 roku w Ratuszu na kolejnej wystawie sztuk pięknych3. Dalsze losy obrazu nie są znane. Dzieło jednak nie zaginęło, jak przypuszczano4. Zapewne jeszcze w XIX wieku trafiło do Rosji. W 2006 roku odkrył je w prywatnych zbio- rach w Moskwie kolekcjoner z Polski, zakupił i przywiózł do kraju. Jest to ósme oryginalne dzieło Marcina Zaleskiego w zbiorach Muzeum Warszawy. 1 Zakup obrazu do zbiorów Muzeum Warszawy dofinansowano ze środków Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego w ramach programu wspierającego powiększanie kolekcji muzealnych. Muzeum otrzymało dofinansowanie w wysokości 140 tys. złotych (całkowita cena wynosiła 180 tys. złotych). 2 Warszawskie wystawy sztuk pięknych w latach 1819–1845, oprac. S. Głowacka-Grajper ECHOES: Museum of Warsaw Report #3 Visitor Studies at the Museum of Warsaw1 Małgorzata Głowacka-Grajper University of Warsaw Introduction This report contributes to Work Package “City Museums and Colonial Pasts” of the Horizon2020 project, ECHOES: European Colonial Heritage Modalities in Entangled Cities. The researchers have been conducting in-depth, qualitative, analyses of Amsterdam Museum, the Museum of Warsaw, and Shanghai History Museum, three city museums representing a distinct position within colonial history (Ariese 2019a; Ariese 2019b; Bukowiecki 2019; Bukowiecki, Wawrzyniak 2019; Pozzi 2019a; Pozzi 2019b; Ariese, Bukowiecki, Pozzi 2019). This report presents the results of research on the impressions and opinions of Poles and foreigners who visited the main exhibition of the Museum of Warsaw. The research primarily focused on the way this exhibition presents the history of Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, during periods when the city and Poland were under the rule of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. The research questions aimed to find out the visitors’ opinions on the museum’s concept for exhibiting things (from paintings and souvenirs to everyday functional objects) connected to Warsaw (Bukowiecki, Wawrzyniak 2019, Things of Warsaw 2017). The researchers also wanted to find out the interviewees’ opinions on how the exhibition presented the history of Warsaw during the period when the city found itself under the rule of a foreign power despite its ethnic and religious diversity. -

This is the main, but not the only reason we can also find some Polish photo- graphers experimenting abroad. This article gives a short overview of the first experiments that took place on Polish ter- ritory, or those undertaken by Poles regardless of where they lived. The list cannot be com- plete, of course, as many of the experiments were not recorded and thus have not survived to this day as evidence. It also cannot be presented in full because of the limited space of this article, so just some of the most inte- resting from those documented examples are selected. When speaking about the first photographers we should bear in mind that we can rarely call them professional photographers. They were rather experimenters, amateurs, or those who used cameras in their work, and only occa- sionally developed their hobbies into a pro- 128 profession.
