2019-20 Term 3 News, Events and Updates at Chatham Grammar A Royal Visit on the Horizon for DofE Just when you think DofE at UKAT can’t get much better, ‘IT DOES!’. After a record-breaking year for registrations, and probably our best year for expedition training, we have received an invitation for some of our students and staff to represent the University of Kent Academies Trust at an event at Cobham Hall School, which will be visited by His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex. This event is a great opportunity to promote and celebrate the success of the DofE at Chatham Grammar. The format of the event will involve participants showcasing how DofE is run at Chatham Grammar, with either a stand or demonstration about their expeditions or physical activities. As well as showing what our students are doing in their programmes, the event will also illustrate the breadth of activities on offer as part of the DofE across Kent and Medway. On the same day His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex, will be hosting a fundraising dinner in the evening at Hever Castle, and we are very excited that one of our UKAT Sixth Form students, Isobel, has been asked to sing a couple of songs at the event. Event planners advised Isobel that she “came highly recommended” after her performance at the DofE Awards Ceremony last year held at Rochester Cathedral. Isobel will also get the chance to meet His Royal Highness at a drinks reception before the dinner. We are so proud of all of our students and this amazing opportunity that they have been given. More information will be in our next newsletter. So much more is happening behind the scenes, such as, Silver students starting their training, staff meetings, professional training and team building. We are also planning for last year’s winners to collect their awards at a ceremony held in May, and of course more expeditions starting in March. For more information and dates for the diary please go to our website www.chathamgrammar.org.uk or you can email the DofE team at [email protected]. 1 2019-20 Term 3 Chatham Grammar’s Musical Celebrations Last term Chatham Grammar and the UKAT Sixth Form held a fabulous Music Concert at St Augustine’s Church. The concert was a wonderful musical celebration of the hard work that had taken place in class as well as extra-curricular activities. There was a sensational variety of Christmas-themed music, with performances from the Choir, Orchestra, Bands, Ensemble and Solo Performances. The concert looked and sounded fantastic, thanks to Josh Pounds and his amazing lighting and sound abilities. Thanks also to Antony Lane for the perfect venue and his generous hospitality. The event was very well received by parents/carers, and our students did exceptionally well - some performing for the very first time! We are already looking forward to this year’s event. 2 2019-20 Term 3 Chatham Grammar - An Award Winning Team This term we took three Green Team students to the Ashford International Hotel for the KM Charity Green Schools Award ceremony. They had been nominated for their work in recycling. The ceremony was likened to the Oscars by the Director of Public Health for Medway, James Williams. Perhaps the school uniforms didn’t quite meet the same level of the glitz and glamour of the Oscars dresses, but it was just as important a ceremony for the students involved. Our students presented an excellent video they had produced about their work in the Academy and looked very smart when they accepted the award. Kent Messenger interviewed and photographed our students with the sponsors, and with the other Medway schools, most of which were primaries. It was fantastic to see Chatham Grammar students recognised for all their hard work amongst schools from different regions of Kent. It has to be said that achieving the overall award was totally unexpected. We were absolutely delighted when Chatham Grammar was announced as Overall Recycling Champions for Kent and Medway! The Geography Department are so proud of the work the Green Team put in each week. Congratulations and well done. 3 2019-20 Term 3 Brilliant Theatre Trip to School of Rock Year 9 –13 Music students from Chatham Grammar and Brompton Academy took a trip to the Gillian Lynne Theatre, Drury Lane last term to see Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical School of Rock. The new musical, based on the 2003 renowned film with the same name starring Jack Black, is about an aspiring musician who poses as a supply teacher and forms a rock band with the prep school’s young students. The musical, which contained fourteen new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber, showcased the talented cast’s skills as they delighted the audience with their energetic performance. It was announced that the younger cast members (whose ages ranged from 8-11 years old) were all playing their own instruments and singing the show’s songs. Students commented after the show that they thoroughly enjoyed the performance and appreciated the learning experience. 4 2019-20 Term 3 Outstanding Success at Athletics Chatham Grammar’s Athletic Teams achieved outstanding success at the indoor athletic this term. Last term some of our Year 7 and 8 students competed in the Medway Sports Hall Athletics competition, at the Howard School. They were well prepared following numerous training sessions and were very focused on achieving their very best. A number of the students achieved 1st or 2nd in their events which resulted in us achieving 1st place overall out of eleven schools. They all performed amazingly well and we are proud of their achievements. Following on from their Medway success, in February Chatham Grammar competed in the Kent Finals at Medway Park. Exhibiting such a high level of athletic prowess enabled our teams to reach an exceptionally high level of performance in this event. Our dream team Year 8 were triumphant, and climbed the podium to accept 2nd place out of fourteen schools - making them the second best indoor athletic champions across the whole of Kent! The Year 7 team were invited to participate at the last minute so we had to form a team very quickly. However, the ongoing commitment and dedication to athletic practices certainly paid off. Despite the lack of competition preparation, and thanks to their determination and focus, our Year 7 competitors performed at a very high standard and achieved 5th out of fourteen schools. A massive well done to all who took part. 5 2019-20 Term 3 Chatham Grammar Named as a National Citizen Service Champion School for 2019 We are delighted to announce our Academy has just been confirmed as a National Citizen Service Champion School for 2019. A Bronze award means 30% of our eligible students (Years 11 and 12) signed up, amazing! Next stop Silver 40% and Gold 50%. There are a variety of projects in the summer break. Students have been working through the ‘Couch to 5k’ app and improving their running skills each week. This has proven to be a very popular club and we are looking forward to seeing students running to the finish line on the day. Details of how you can sponsor our team will follow shortly. 7 2019-20 Term 3 English Students Visit the British Library Year 9 English students were given the opportunity to visit the fabulous British Library in January. We caught the train to London and met up with our University of Kent ambassadors, who had organised the trip. The students were given a fantastic talk about the Women’s Liberation Movement, and we learned all about the politics and events of that period in feminist history. The students were given tasks to read over old newspaper articles and texts from that era, analysing the language. It was really informative, and the students took a lot away from it. From there, the students had the opportunity to explore the library. We learned that the building possesses over 700km of shelving and millions of books. Students had the chance to have a look through the British Library’s treasure exhibition, which had displays of books, maps and scrolls that were hundreds of years old and from all across the world.
