Welcome to my imaginary booth and thank you for taking the time to click inside. Last year’s sunny and convivial Pasadena fair is there in my mind’s eye as I prepare this catalogue from my desk in rural England. The sky is overcast but the chaffinch outside my window is insistent so I look out, past the weeping ash and ivy-clad wall to the thatched cottage beyond. The lawn is carpeted with snowdrops but no daffodils yet. In a normal year, I would prepare for California in winter and return from New York in spring, my own return presaging the return of the swallows. This year, as each in our different way, we tackle the effects of the present crisis, we are united in valuing our community and in looking forward to the time when we will all meet again. This California book fair stand has just ten shelves in it for you to view and each shelf has five books on it. We have Children’s Books, Eye-Witness accounts of the French Revolution, Novels by Women, Ideal Societies, Illustrated Books, Education, Guide Books, Devotional Works, Memoirs and Biographies and - the shelf by the entrance - ‘To Do Books’, how to plant trees, understand heraldry, use varnishes and catch rats as well as a catalogue of inspirational designs for your new garden furniture.

  • Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, C.1632-C.1700
Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, c.1632-c.1700 Robin Macdonald PhD University of York History September 2015 2 Abstract The historiography of colonial and ‘religious’ encounters in New France has tended to focus on encounters between human beings, between ‘colonisers’ and ‘colonised’ or ‘natives’ and ‘newcomers’. This thesis will focus on encounters between people and environment. Drawing on recent anthropology, notably the work of Tim Ingold, it will argue that whilst bodies shaped environment, environment also could shape bodies – and their associated religious practices. Through the examination of a broad variety of source materials – in particular, the Jesuit Relations – this thesis will explore the myriad ways in which the sacred was created and experienced between c.1632 and c.1700. Beginning with the ocean crossing to New France – an area largely unexplored in the historiographical literature – it will argue that right from the outset of a missionary’s journey, his or her practices were shaped by encounters with both humans and non-humans, by weather or the stormy Ocean Sea. Reciprocally, it will argue, missionary bodies and practices could shape these environments. Moving next to the mission terrain, it will analyse a variety spaces – both environmental and imaginary – tracing the slow build up of belief through habitual practices. Finally, it will chart the movement of missionaries and missionary correspondence from New France back to France. It was not only missionaries, it will argue, who could experience

  • Scenario and Campaign List - Introduction
Republican Bayonets on the Rhine Scenario and Campaign List - Introduction List Comments The scenario list for Republican Bayonets on the Rhine includes 28 historical battles and over 200 scenarios that are in the main folder. This also includes Bonus, select campaign scenarios and also 15 min turn format scenarios. The players should note that the scenario file name lists whether a scenario is HTH - Head to Head or SOLO - meaning that it has AI scripts and can be played against the program. There were several HTH scenarios in the game which because of their complexity do not have a Solo counterpart. Others were simplified to allow for a more balanced situation when converted to a Solo setting. Three design scenarios are included for Scenarios Designers to use as well as those that would like to see all of the uniforms for the soldiers for this time period. They show the layout of the images that are part of the game. Key to the List Each scenario has a filename, scenario name and amount of turns on each line. Filename - has a number, the name of the action/battle and whether it is a Head to Head (HTH) or Solo (SOLO) scenario. If the scenario is a variant then the letter V followed by a number is listed after the name of the action/battle. Examples: Filename Title 001_Valmy_FB-H_HTH.scn 001. The Battle of Valmy FB-Full Battle, H-Historical, HTH-meant for Head to Head play 016_Jemappes_SG-H_SOLO.scn 016. Jemappes: Assaulting the Northern Flank SG-A segment of the full battle, H-Historical, SOLO-meant for Solo play Other abbreviations: V-Variant (V1, V2, etc) V1-1st Variant of the historical scenario 1D-1st Day of the battle, 2D-2nd Day (etc) Bonus - Bonus scenario Camp - Campaign scenario Order of Battle Review Scenarios See the OB_View folder No listing is provided for these scenarios.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along w ith adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. Youa w ill find good image o f the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until com plete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

Until now, no single study has appeared, or indeed been published, charting the course of its development during the period in discussion. This thesis aims to fill this lacuna, not by offering an episodic account of its activities but by examining the precepts, perceptions and procedures that determined its conduct as it relates to la sûreté de l’état. Its objective, in other words, is to demonstrate how the pursuit and punishment of spies is not a simple cloak and dagger tale of hidden plots and secret agents but a fundamental question of national security. As this thesis will explain, the role that counter-espionage played is actually of central importance to our understanding of how the revolutionaries defended and securitized their embryonic state at a crucial juncture in its existence.
