Welcome to my imaginary booth and thank you for taking the time to click inside. Last year’s sunny and convivial Pasadena fair is there in my mind’s eye as I prepare this catalogue from my desk in rural England. The sky is overcast but the chaffinch outside my window is insistent so I look out, past the weeping ash and ivy-clad wall to the thatched cottage beyond. The lawn is carpeted with snowdrops but no daffodils yet. In a normal year, I would prepare for California in winter and return from New York in spring, my own return presaging the return of the swallows. This year, as each in our different way, we tackle the effects of the present crisis, we are united in valuing our community and in looking forward to the time when we will all meet again. This California book fair stand has just ten shelves in it for you to view and each shelf has five books on it. We have Children’s Books, Eye-Witness accounts of the French Revolution, Novels by Women, Ideal Societies, Illustrated Books, Education, Guide Books, Devotional Works, Memoirs and Biographies and - the shelf by the entrance - ‘To Do Books’, how to plant trees, understand heraldry, use varnishes and catch rats as well as a catalogue of inspirational designs for your new garden furniture.

  • Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, C.1632-C.1700
Inhabiting New France: Bodies, Environment and the Sacred, c.1632-c.1700 Robin Macdonald PhD University of York History September 2015 2 Abstract The historiography of colonial and ‘religious’ encounters in New France has tended to focus on encounters between human beings, between ‘colonisers’ and ‘colonised’ or ‘natives’ and ‘newcomers’. This thesis will focus on encounters between people and environment. Drawing on recent anthropology, notably the work of Tim Ingold, it will argue that whilst bodies shaped environment, environment also could shape bodies – and their associated religious practices. Through the examination of a broad variety of source materials – in particular, the Jesuit Relations – this thesis will explore the myriad ways in which the sacred was created and experienced between c.1632 and c.1700. Beginning with the ocean crossing to New France – an area largely unexplored in the historiographical literature – it will argue that right from the outset of a missionary’s journey, his or her practices were shaped by encounters with both humans and non-humans, by weather or the stormy Ocean Sea. Reciprocally, it will argue, missionary bodies and practices could shape these environments. Moving next to the mission terrain, it will analyse a variety spaces – both environmental and imaginary – tracing the slow build up of belief through habitual practices. Finally, it will chart the movement of missionaries and missionary correspondence from New France back to France. It was not only missionaries, it will argue, who could experience

Cage and Beyond [Música Experimental.

On the Formation of Canons: The Dynamics of Narratives in Art History Victor Ginsburgh ECARES, Université Libre de Bruxelles and CORE, Université catholique de Louvain and Sheila Weyers Université catholique de Louvain Abstract The paper illustrates the formation over time of the late 20th century canons of two schools that dominated all other European schools in their time: Italian Renaissance and Flemish Realism. Since most artists were discussed, some 400 years ago, by Vasari in the second edition of his Vite, and by van Mander in his Schilder-boeck, narratives by art historians can be followed over a long period of time. To explore the dynamic process of canon formation, we collected data on the presence and the greatness of a large number of artists in narrative works written by important art scholars at time intervals of roughly 75 years, so that the 400 years elapsed between 1600 and 2000 are spanned as best as possible. At least half of the artists in the two canons were already there 400 years ago. There are several cases of wrong attributions or of new technical discoveries that prevented some names to be canonical any sooner. There are also artists who art historians learnt to appreciate or to understand better, and who entered at much later times. Finally, the number of names that entered or were moved up in the canon because their works acquired new properties in the light of works by artists that followed them is not very large. This appears to be in contradiction with the frequent suggestion that canons are continuously moving and that no artist can survive forever.

INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original subm itted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along w ith adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. Youa w ill find good image o f the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material.
