Sa notoriété n’a de cesse de se développer. Elle s’agrandit, quartier par quartier, devenant au fil du temps la Ville des quatre saisons. Founded on 2nd May, 1857 by imperial decree of Napoleon III, Arcachon became very soon a holiday destination synonymous with well-being. Its reputation has continued to grow. It expanded, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, over time becoming the ‘City of the Four Seasons’. • La Ville d’Eté Elle a vu le jour au tout début du XIXème siècle avec l’essor des bains de mer. Les célébrités s’y pressent et y construisent des chalets, Carnaval Arcachon en Scène des villas... Aujourd’hui, la Ville d’Été comprend le Front de Mer et le centre d’Arcachon. The Summer Town was established at the beginning of the 19th century. The fashion of the sea swimming arrived to Arcachon and celebrities build there chalets and villas. Today, the‘Summer City’ comprises the seafront and the centre of Arcachon. • La Ville d’Automne Cette ville comprend les quartiers Saint-Ferdinand et de l’Aiguillon qui portent haut les couleurs de la pêche et du nautisme. Les pêcheries et les chantiers navals y ont prospéré jusqu’au début des années 50. The Autumn Town includes the Saint-Ferdinand and Aiguillon neighbourhoods, renowned for fishing and yachting. Fisheries and shipyards thrived there until the beginning of the 50’s. • La Ville d’Hiver Salon Nautique Fêtes de la Mer Véritable joyau architectural, elle se compose de 300 villas au style flamboyant. Elle est née de la volonté des frères Pereire de créer sur la dune d’Arcachon un véritable sanatorium à ciel ouvert (1863). Très vite, aux côtés des chalets hygiénistes se construisent d’immenses villas dans lesquelles les plus grandes personnalités de l’époque se donnent rendez-vous. The Winter Town, a real architectural jewel, is made up of 300 glamorous villas. It was founded by the Pereire brothers in order to create an open-air sanatorium on the Arcachon sand dune (1863). Alongside the hygienists’ chalets, enormous villas were very quickly built in which gathered the biggest names of the time. • La Ville de Printemps Elle correspond aux quartiers de Pereire et des Abatilles. On y trouve la célèbre Source des Abatilles. The Spring Town covers the Pereire and Abatilles neighbourhoods. There we find the famous ‘Source des Abatilles’. Levine 1College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon Abstract Examining fluxes of biogeochemical constituents at the mouth of an estuary is necessary for assessing the modification of terrigenous-source materials in the estuary prior to reaching the ocean. In many rivers and estuaries, including the Columbia River estuary (CRE), methane is highly enriched with respect to oceanic concentrations and the equilibrium solubility of the atmospheric gas. We developed a methane budget for the CRE to examine the potential for significant modification of the estuarine methane budget by lateral exchange with peripheral tide flats. We accomplished the challenging task of constraining the net transfer through the estuary-ocean interface using novel instrumentation: a rapid methane analyzer combined with a membrane-contactor interfaced with a pumped-sampling undulating towed vehicle. Transport of riverine methane into the CRE was essentially balanced by losses due to flux to the atmosphere (42%), microbial oxi- dation in the water column (21%), and transport to the ocean (32%), suggesting limited net effect of lateral tide flat processes on the CRE methane budget. Estimated uncertainty bounds constrained lateral sink/source terms within 230% to 120% of the primary river input.
