In writing such articles, we utilise the expertise of HVS for each market to the full extent combining our in-house data and research together with published information regarding each of the examined destinations. Highlights • In March 2012, the European Union granted formal EU candidate status to Serbia. Previously, during meetings held in February 2012 between the IMF and Serbian representatives, it was agreed that the status of the arrangement – worth €1.1 billion – with Serbia would remain unchanged. • Accession talks with the EU began in January 2014, but membership is not expected before 2020. • The Serbian Progressive Party of Aleksandar Vucic, the Prime Minister, won nearly 50% of the vote in an early parliamentary poll in 2014. • According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the Capital Investment in Travel & Tourism in Serbia was approximately €250 million in 2014 and is projected to rise to over €310 million by 2025 (in 2014 prices). • In 2014, approximately one million international tourists visited Serbia, spending roughly €1.0 billion, up from €0.9 billion in 2013 (a 9.9% increase). The WTTC predicts that by 2025 the direct contribution of tourism to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be 2.5%, up from 2.1% in 2014. • Belgrade’s “Nikola Tesla” Airport saw an increase of 5.5% in passenger traffic year-to-August for 2015 over the same period in 2014.

INTRODUCTION Mountain Avala (511 m), a protected natural area situated at about 20 km south of downtown Belgrade, certainly represents an ideal destination for the weekend tourists from the capital city coming to enjoy the natural beauties of this mountain.     BELGRADE SIGHTSEEING TOURS ROYAL PALACE The palace complex of the Karageorgevich dynasty on Dedinje consists of the Royal and White Palaces. The Royal Palace The Royal Palace was built between 1924 and 1929 with the private funds of His Majesty King Alexander I (the grandfather of HRH Crown Prince Alexander). The architects were Zivojin Nikolic and Nikolay Krassnoff of the Royal Academy. The palace is made of white stone in the Serbian-Byzantine style. Attached to The Royal Palace there is a Royal Chapel dedicated to Saint Apostle Andrew The First-Called, the Patron Saint of The Royal Family. The Royal Palace was the home of King Alexander I and King Peter. Today the Royal Palace is the home of Crown Prince Alexander II and his family. The White Palace The White Palace is located within the same complex as The Royal Palace and it was commissioned by command of His Majesty King Alexander I as the residence for his three sons HRH Crown Prince Peter (the future King Peter II), Prince Tomislav and Prince Andrej. King Alexander I envisaged that his three sons would require their own private accommodation when they became of age, but his assassination in Marseille caused the destiny of his sons to take a different turn. The young King Peter II became the new master of the Dedinje Complex and the completion of The White Palace was supervised by King Peter II great uncle HRH Prince Regent Paul. It was built from 1934 until 1936, as the project of the architect Alexander Djordjevic. When completed it became the official residence on loan to HRH Prince Regent Paul and his family, until King Peter II came of age.

    MIT/AKPIA Postdoctoral Fellowship, 2017/2018 End-of-tenure report on the research Aleksandar Stanicic1 PREFACE Being a postdoctoral fellow at AKPIA/MIT program marked the turninG point in my younG academic career. To be fair, even before I occupied the postdoctoral office in AKPIA premises right under the famous MIT dome, I had significant doctoral and postdoctoral experience and a pleasure of working at some of the best universities and with some of the leadinG scholars in the field of architecture. But it is this tenure at MIT Department of Architecture, and workinG closely alongside professors Nasser Rabbat and James Wescoat, that chanGed fundamentally the way I think about academia and my place in it. Our numerous casual and official conversations in and around the office were so inspirinG and often even mind-boggling, that I soon developed a habit of cominG to work early and leavinG late just to catch the slightest opportunity for a brief exchange of ideas and opinions. The intellectual atmosphere created by professors and students alike allowed me to thrive professionally, which two years and one postdoc fellowship later led to an appointment as an Assistant Professor at Delft University of TechnoloGy. The lessons learned durinG the AKPIA/MIT fellowship about academic excellence, honesty and conduct will stay with me for a long time, and for that I will be forever grateful to professors Rabbat and Wescoat who Gave me this life-changing opportunity. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES, METHODOLOGIES AND OUTCOMES The twentieth century has witnessed destruction of the built environment and heritage in armed conflicts on an unprecedented scale, inasmuch that acts of violence against cities have become intrinsic parts of both state-building and modernity-building apparatus.2 The destruction of architecture, one could argue, is old as architecture itself due to the innate characteristic of buildings to provide existence in a place, create meaning and propel socio- economic status.
