I build an account of the work lives of these public servants on the basis of data from interviews, participant observation, and unobtrusive study of planning and policy documents. Amid rapid urbanization, I show that Ethiopian legacies of high modern development are gaining new expression in the EPRDF’s agenda of infrastructure-led development. Urban renewal was tentatively tried in Addis Ababa in the 1980s. But by the time of the master planning round begun in 2012, renewal had become the signature intervention of massive redevelopment of the city. Slum spaces have become the proving grounds for planners as key agents of urban governance. By drawing together insights from Marxist urban studies, socio-legal studies, and recent literature on African urbanisms, the dissertation refines scholarly understandings of the dynamic relations between governance and development in (East) African cities. Urban renewal is not reducible to a local variant on the familiar story of capitalist enclosure, and the slum is not just a space of immiseration beyond the reach of regulation. Instead, the dissertation shows that as planners draw a line against development failures of previous regimes, they furnish the local state with legitimation for its deepening involvement in everyday life. At the nexus of rapid urbanization, new flows of capital, and the bold visions of this resurgent developmental state, planners see themselves engaged in a historic project to realize better urban futures through renewal. Some even see in the current moment a more egalitarian planning praxis to come, including upgrading as an alternative to urban renewal. However, though the specialist knowledge of planners points to the potential for new and more inclusive planning paradigms, such a vision has yet to overcome the hegemony of party politics. Acknowledgements While I hope many more research projects are ahead of me, this is surely the only dissertation I will write. This is my chance to acknowledge the considerable intellectual and personal debts I have incurred in the course of this project. Scholarship is ultimately a collective endeavor. NATURE OF SUBMISSION: Design Research This Design report records a creative design approach together with the development of original ideas resulting in an integrated proposal for presenting Axum’s rich tangible and intangible heritage to visitors to this important World Heritage Town. This innovative proposal seeks to use local resources and skills to create a distinct and memorable experience for visitors to Axum. It relies on engaging members of the local community to manage and ‘own’ the various ‘attractions’ for visitors, hopefully keeping a substantial proportion of earnings from tourism in the local community. The proposal combines attitudes to Design with fresh approaches to curatorship that can be applied to other sites. In this study, propositions are tested in several schemes relating to the design of ‘Interpretation centres’ and ideas for exhibits that would bring them to life and engage visitors. ABSTRACT: Axum, in the highlands of Ethiopia was the centre of an important trading empire, controlling the Red Sea and channeling exotic African merchandise into markets of the East and West. In the fourth century (AD), it became one of the first states to adopt Christianity as a state religion. Axum became the major religious centre for the Ethiopian Coptic Church. Axum’s most spectacular archaeological remains are the large carved monoliths – stelae that are concentrated in the Stelae Park opposite the Cathedral precinct.

    FOREWORD Statistical data that reflect the socio-economic and demographic conditions of the residents of a country are useful for designing and preparation of development plans as well as for monitoring and evaluation of the impact of the implementation of the development plans. These statistical data include population size, age, sex, literacy and education, marital status, housing stocks and conditions …etc. In order to fill the gap for these socio-economic and demographic data need, Ethiopia has conducted its third Population and Housing Census in the months of May and November 2007. The 2007 Population and Housing Census of Ethiopia was conducted under the auspices of the Population Census Commission that was established by a proclamation No. 449/1997. The Commission is chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and the members of the commission were drawn from various relevant Ministries, Regional state representatives, House of Federation, National Electoral Board and the Central Statistical Agency, serving as the Office of the Census Commission (Secretariat). According to the proclamation, the processing, evaluation and analyses of the data collected in this census as well as its dissemination are the major responsibilities of this office. Thus, the Office of the Population Census Commission is pleased to present the census report entitled “The 2007 Population and Housing Census of Ethiopia: Statistical Report for Addis Ababa City Administration” for the users. Subsequently, another report which deals with detailed analysis of the result of the 2007 Population and Housing Census data is in the process of being prepared and will also be prepared and printed soon. Before the conduct of a census enumeration, numbers of preparatory activities were also carried-out.

This analysis of the interactions between the Abrahamic faiths is primarily concerned with identifying notable periods of social cohesion in an effort to contest mainstream narratives that often pit the three against each other. This task is undertaken by incorporating a comparative analysis of the Ethiopian Christian code, the Fetha Nagast (Law of Kings), with Islamic and Judaic legal traditions. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of female genital mutilation varied across different regions of the country. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the trend and determinants of female genital mutilation among reproductive-age women over time. Methods: A secondary data analysis was done using 2000, 2005, and 2016 Demographic Health Surveys (DHSs) of Ethiopia. A total weighted sample of 36,685 reproductive-age women was included for analysis from these three EDHS Surveys. Logit based multivariate decomposition analysis was employed for identifying factors contributing to the decrease in FGM over time. The Bernoulli model was fitted using spatial scan statistics version 9.6 to identify hotspot areas of FGM, and ArcGIS version 10.6 was applied to explore the spatial distribution FGM across the country.
