												  The Wild CascadesTHE WILD CASCADES Fall, 1984 2 The Wild Cascades PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ONCE THE LINES ARE DRAWN, THE BATTLE IS NOT OVER The North Cascades Conservation Council has developed a reputation for consistent, hard-hitting, responsible action to protect wildland resources in the Washington Cascades. It is perhaps best known for leading the fight to preserve and protect the North Cascades in the North Cascades National Park, the Pasayten and Glacier Peak Wilderness Areas, and the Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas. Despite the recent passage of the Washington Wilderness Act, many areas which deserve and require wilderness designation remain unprotected. One of the goals of the N3C must be to assure protection for these areas. In this issue of the Wild Cascades we have analyzed the Washington Wilderness Act to see what we won and what still hangs in the balance (page ). The N3C will continue to fight to establish new wilderness areas, but there is also a new challenge. Our expertise is increasingly being sought by government agencies to assist in developing appropriate management plans and to support them against attempts to undermine such plans. The invitation to participate more fully in management activities will require considerable effort, but it represents a challenge and an opportunity that cannot be ignored. If we are to meet this challenge we will need members who are either knowledgable or willing to learn about an issue and to guide the Board in its actions. The Spring issue of the Wild Cascades carried a center section with two requests: 1) volunteers to assist and guide the organization on various issues; and 2) payment of dues.

Promote economic opportunity for all residents of the County, especially for unemployed and for disadvantaged persons and encourage growth in areas experiencing insufficient economic growth”. This policy was originally adopted and implemented with the adoption of the County-wide Planning Policies in 1993 (Res. 93-015) and the Franklin County Growth Management Comprehensive Plan in 1995. In 1999, this policy was included in the adoption of the County’s first Economic Development Plan (Res. 1999-399) and utilized in subsequent Economic Development Plans as amended in Year 2004 (Res.

Next year marks Washington Wild’s 35th anniversary as the premier Alison Rosenstock state-wide Wilderness grassroots advocacy organization, one that has played an invaluable Telephone Outreach role since 1979 in permanently protecting nearly three million acres of Wilderness within Washington State. As many of you may recall, WA Wild was instrumental in bringing together bi-partisan support leading to the passage of the Washington Wilderness Act in 1984, another Christine Scheele milestone anniversary to observe next year. Open Spaces, Trails, and Open Space Protection in the Mid-Columbia Today No other place on Earth is like the Mid-Columbia. Massive basalt flows, cataclysmic floods, and other geologic processes created the ridges and rivers landscape that defines our sense of place. Visual and physical access to these places – views of them and from them – help us to understand and physically and emotionally connect with a landscape we recognize as “home”. Open spaces, whether viewed or explored, are our portals to making these connections. Our unique geographic region (Figure 3) is the home of a significant number of open space and trail resources that benefit both Tri-City residents and visitors.
