Introduction

Introduction

"The Federalist" is a series of 77 essays, written under the Publius, that appeared in newspapers between October 1787 and August 1788. The essays were written by Alexander , , and , and urged the citizens of New York to ratify the United States Constitution. These 77 essays and 8 other essays were compiled in "The Federalist: A Collection of Essays, Written in Favour of the New Constitution, as Agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787," published by John and Archibald McLean in 1788. "The Federalist" became known as "The Federalist Papers" sometime in the 20th century, perhaps with the sesquicentennial edition published by The Modern Library in 1937.
