PARASITES OF LARGEMOUTH BASS (MICROPTERUS SALMOIDES) IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA By Daniel J. Troxel A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Humboldt State University In Partial Fulfillment of The Requirements for the Degree Masters of Science Natural Resources, Fisheries November, 2010 ABSTRACT Parasites of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in northern California Daniel J. Troxel A total of fifty largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) were collected from Clear Lake, Lake Berryessa, Lake Sonoma, Trinity Lake and the Sacramento – San Joaquin River Delta. All fish were infected with at least one parasite, with the exception of one juvenile fish from Trinity Lake in which no parasites were found. The following parasites were observed in largemouth bass: Actinocleiudus unguis, Clavunculus bursatus, Clinostomum complanatum, Proteocephalus pearsei, Contracaecum sp., Hysterothylacium (?) sp., Spinitectus carolini, Camallanus sp., Neoechinorhynchus cylindratus, Myzobdella lugubris, Batracobdella phalera, Ergasilus centrarchidarum, and Argulus flavescens. In addition to these identified parasites, I also found an unidentified leech and Proteocephalus sp. plerocercoids, which could not be identified to species. All of these parasites have been previously reported infecting largemouth bass. Clinostomum complanatum, Contracaecum sp. and Myzobdella lugubris, have been previously reported in California; but these are the first known reports from largemouth bass in California. Actinocleidus unguis was the only parasite found that has previously been reported to infect largemouth bass in California. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would first and foremost like to acknowledge my parents, without their support over the past two years this project would not have been possible. SPORT FISH OF OHIO identification DIVISION OF WILDLIFE 1 With more than 40,000 miles of streams, 2.4 million acres of Lake Erie and inland water, and 450 miles of the Ohio River, Ohio supports a diverse and abundant fish fauna represented by more than 160 species. Ohio’s fishes come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and colors...and live in a variety of aquatic habitats from our largest lakes and rivers to the smallest ponds and creeks. Approximately one-third of these species can be found in this guide. This fish identification guide provides color illustrations to help anglers identify their catch, and useful tips to help catch more fish. We hope it will also increase your awareness of the diversity of fishes in Ohio. This book also gives information about the life history of 27 of Ohio’s commonly caught species, as well as information on selected threatened and endangered species. Color illustrations and names are also offered for 20 additional species, many of which are rarely caught by anglers, but are quite common throughout Ohio. Fishing is a favorite pastime of many Ohioans and one of the most enduring family traditions. A first fish or day shared on the water are memories that last a lifetime. It is our sincere hope that the information in this guide will contribute significantly to your fishing experiences and understanding of Ohio’s fishes. Good Fishing! Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. Typically a marine fish virus, most recently VHS has emerged in 18 species of fish in the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada. The VHS isolate found in the Great Lakes USGS Winton, James Dr. Basin is most similar to the VHS isolate previously found in the Canadian Offices Maritime Region in Eastern North America and has been labeled Type IVb. Background and Description Alabama bass (Micropterus henshalli) is one of at least twelve recognized temperate black basses indigenous to the freshwater rivers and lakes of North America. It is an aggressive species that generally does not grow as big as largemouth bass, can rapidly become abundant when introduced into an ecosystem, competes with other black bass for food, and can genetically pollute populations of smallmouth bass (M. dolomieu) and largemouth bass (M. salmoides), as well as other species of black bass (e.g., Shoal Bass, Spotted Bass). Because of its fighting ability, anglers from black bass fishing clubs have illegally introduced Alabama bass to Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia waters. It has been introduced by government agencies in Texas and California, and possibly abroad in South Africa. Where introduced, the species has not been eradicated, though harvest may be encouraged. Anglers have debated the merits of a control program dedicated to Alabama bass because some enjoy fishing for the species, while others recognize the problems it poses to other black bass species. A recently excavated site, CA-SAC-47, provides direct evidence of subsistence strategies in the form of faunal and plant remains. This faunal assemblage is compared to direct evidence of subsistence from Delta sites SAC-42, SAC-43, SAC-65, SAC-145, and SAC-329. Box 250 Potter Valley, CA 95469 August 1996 (707) 743-1815 (707) 743-1816 f«x [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY BACKGROUND Introduction This report gathers together the best available information to provide the historical and current status of chinook salmon, coho salmon, pink salmon, and steelhead in the Russian River basin. Although the historical records are limited, all sources depict a river system where the once dominant salmonids have declined dramatically. The last 150 years of human activities have transformed the Russian River basin into a watershed heavily altered by agriculture and urban development. Flows in the main river channel river are heavily regulated. The result is a river system with significantly compromised biological functions. The anthropogenic factors contributing to the decline of salmonids are discussed. Study Area The 1,485 square mile Russian River watershed, roughly 80 miles long and 10 to 30 miles wide, lies in Mendocino, Sonoma, and Lake counties. The basin topography is characterized by a sequence of northwest/southeast trending fault-block ridges and alluvial valleys. Lying within a region of Mediterranean climate, the watershed is divided into a fog-influenced coastal region and an interior region of hot, dry summers. -

Chapter 9 Winter biology of centrarchid fishes C. D. Suski and M. S. Ridgway 9.1 Introduction Temperate latitudes experience a predictable annual cycle of alternating warm and cold periods that can result in below freezing conditions, ice cover, and alterations to aquatic habitats that persist for a substantial portion of a year. Winter represents a very interesting and challenging time of the year that exerts a strong selective pressure on individual survival, community structure, and year class strength for centrarchid fishes. Despite the impact of this time on both individuals and populations, we are only beginning to comprehend how this period of the year can influence centrarchid fishes. The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the current literature that defines the ecological, behavioral, and physio- logical alterations experienced by centrarchid fishes both prior to and during winter. Because of the paucity of information on winter biology of centrarchid fishes, this chapter has been written in a general format whereby studies of different centrarchid fishes have been pooled to identify trends that exist across the entire family. Where appropriate, exceptions to these general trends have been noted. A general over-arching question does emerge from work to date despite the lack of broad research coverage in many areas of centrarchid winter biology: What physiological and ecological changes occur to ensure survival prior to and during a period of reduced energy intake? 9.2 Definition of “winter” We define “winter” as the period of the year between the autumnal equinox and prior to the onset of spawning in centrarchid fishes.
