Message from Revd Liz Hassall

This is a very different letter from the one I was expecting to write. Normally in the Easter Village Link edition, I would be asking you all to come and join us at our Easter services. This year, I am inviting you to celebrate the season of Easter at home.

On the 17th March, it was announced that public worship in the Church of would be suspended until further notice. The Archbishops of Canterbury and are very clear that this doesn’t mean the Church has closed, but rather that we are changing our focus. Here is an extract from their letter:

“Our life is going to be less characterised by attendance at church on Sunday, and more characterised by the prayer and service we offer each day. We may not be able to pray with people in the ways that we are used to, but we can certainly pray for people. And we can certainly offer practical care and support. Please do carry on supporting the local foodbank and buy extra provisions for it” Each village is approaching the need for practical help differently. By now you should have heard from your local village about what support is available. As the Church, we are working closely with the parish councils and other community groups to coordinate support. If you do not yet know what help is available, please contact me and I will pass your details to the relevant village organisation.

As so many of our villagers are in self-isolation, perhaps one of the most important things will be keeping in touch with each other. Elsewhere in the magazine you will find details of Phone a Friend – a way of keeping in touch. If you are in self-isolation, and would like to help others please sign up for this.

Our church buildings will not be used for public services, but those that are usually open during the day will remain open for private prayer. I will be delivering prayer leaflets to each church which you are welcome to take away and use at home.

For those who have access to the internet, there is a new website bylandchurches.net which I will be updating regularly with worship resources, prayers and maybe even a sermon. It is in blog format, so you can also leave non-urgent messages and prayer requests in the comments section. If you aren’t sure how, read the “where to start” section. 2

If you do not have access to the internet and would like regular news from the Church, please let me know. I hope to be able to send paper-based news and resources to those who can’t access the internet.

Even though life will be very different for many of us in the coming weeks, being in isolation at home opens up opportunities for us to help others in different ways. I look forward to hearing how you are rising to the challenge, whether that is through prayer, passing on information or listening and befriending those around you.

As we approach Easter, I pray that you may know truly the love that God has for the world and discover the joy of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life.

A prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us to love our neighbour, and to care for those in need as if we were caring for you. In this time of anxiety, give us strength to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick, and to assure the isolated of our love, and your love, for your name’s sake. Amen.

Public services are currently suspended but the life and work of the Church continues. Find us online at bylandchurches.net or phone Revd Liz on 01347 822809 or 07388 510984 for prayer and pastoral support. Church buildings remain open for private prayer. Readings for April can be found on page 13 Readings for Holy Week can be found on pages 14-15

3 Until further notice all Annual Parochial and District Church Meetings are cancelled

From the registers Our Church registers mark some of the most significant times in people’s lives. Each of these services involves an extended network of family and friends and is one of the ways that the Church connects with people outside our usual congregations. Please keep all these people, and their families, in your prayers. The wedding of Alice Denny & Stephen Wombwell took place on Saturday 14th March at . The funeral of Alan Metcalfe took place on Tuesday 17th March at .

This year in church we have been hearing mostly from the Gospel of Matthew so here are some selections that I invite you to use each day from Palm Sunday to Easter Day.

Use any version of the bible. You can also find the bible for free on the internet at biblegateway.com. The version of the bible we use in our churches is the New International Version, but do use your preferred version. If you don’t have a bible at home, let me know and I’ll drop one off for you.

Start by finding a quiet place and becoming still. You could light a candle as a sign of being in the presence of God.

Read the passage two or three times slowly. Think about the questions. Talk to God about how you are feeling. Finish with the Lord’s Prayer.

5th April – Palm Sunday – the entrance into Jerusalem Matthew 21: 1-11 Who do you think Jesus was? If he was a King, why ride on a donkey? If you were in that crowd, what would you shout at him?

6th April – Monday – the turning of the tables Matthew 21: 12-17 Jesus was angry at the systems which sought to profit from religion. What makes you angry about the world today? What do you think Jesus would say about our society?

7th April – Tuesday – the greatest commandment Matthew 22: 34-40 During this crisis the need to love our neighbours is more urgent than ever. What are you doing to show love to your neighbours? When we go back to our normal routines, what could you do differently to show love for God and neighbour?

14 8th April – Wednesday – Plots and anointing Matthew 26: 1-13 Jesus knew what was coming. Do you think that helped him to understand it? The unnamed woman did what she could to show love and worship to Jesus. What could you do or say to show Jesus how you feel about him?

9th April – Thursday – The Last Supper Matthew 26: 20-30 We can’t gather together and feast at the moment. Who would you normally be with this week? Can you pray for their needs?

10th April – Good Friday – The Crucifixion Matthew 27: 32-37 Matthew 27: 45-50 The crucifixion looks like a defeat, but Jesus’ willingness to suffer and die ends being the greatest victory. Look back at difficult times in your life. Can you see how God has brought something new out of those times?

Saturday – The Guard at the tomb Matthew 27: 62-66 Holy Saturday is always a time of waiting between the sadness of Good Friday and the joy of Easter Day. What are you waiting for? Talk to God about it.

Easter Sunday – Jesus is risen Matthew 28: 1-10 The resurrection of Jesus is miraculous and very well attested by contemporary witnesses Jesus says “Do not be afraid”. Pray for any fears you have to be lifted and for the joy of Easter to fill you up.

15 News from Husthwaite CE Primary School & Apple Tree Nursery - part of the Husthwaite & Sessay CE Primary Federation Lots of learning again at Husthwaite School and Apple Tree Nursery which has included the whole school participating in a curriculum enrichment week focussed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Activities included the ‘Great Dunkin Debate’ where children had to evaluate the ‘dunking’ and ‘melting’ properties of various biscuits (chocolate coated biscuits were not the best!). Class 1 made their own mini trebuchets and had fun seeing whose could catapult a ball the furthest. The nursery children were fascinated to learn about ice and how they could melt it. They experimented with cold, warm and salty warm water and discovered that warm salty water melted the ice the best! A brief was set for each class to design and build models of Tudor buildings linked to the Fire of London selecting suitable materials from a range of equipment. The School celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week with the theme ‘Find Your Brave’ and Safer Internet Day with the theme ‘Together for a better internet’. Key messages were reinforced with special assemblies to mark both events. Children arrived at school dressed in their favourite ‘sporty’ outfit on Friday 13th March to participate in a ‘Anythingathon’ as part of Sport Relief 2020 organised by our School Council. The children were able to choose from running a mile, hula hooping, skipping and basketball dribbling. A great way to get the whole school moving by having fun together and raising money for charity. Apple Tree Nursery is open five days per day week from 8.45am to 3.30pm offering full or part day care in a school setting. If you would like to arrange a visit or find out more about our nursery, please do call the school for further information. We also welcome visits to come and see the nursery in action. Fundraising – Jumble Sale 25th April 2020 Friends of Husthwaite School (FOHS) are holding a jumble sale at Husthwaite Village Hall on Saturday 25th April 10.30-12.30. There will also be a cake stall, refreshments and a raffle. All donations of jumble will be most welcome and can be delivered to school 20th-24th April. Please visit our new website: www.husthwaite.n-yorks.sch.uk. Visits to the school are always welcome – please phone for further information 01347 868371 16 17 Crayke, Brandsby & Yearsley Brandsby WI We were wonderfully entertained at our March meeting by Dominic Goodwin and his talk on three great entertainers, Joyce Grenfell, Margaret Rutherford and Peter Ustinov. Joyce Grenfell, the niece of Nancy Astor, made her stage debut in 1939. She entertained the troops during the Second World War with her singing and comic talents. She appeared in numerous films, including the St Trinian’s series and she was made an OBE in 1946. Sadly, she passed away before her Damehood could be bestowed, in 1980. Margaret Rutherford’s upbringing was very different to Joyce Grenfell’s. Her father was committed to Broadmoor and her mother died when Margaret was only three. She was a talented pianist who made her stage debut in 1925. She was also a talented comic character actress, whose film successes included Blithe Spirit and Passport to Pimlico. Peter Ustinov made his stage debut in 1939 before serving in the British Army during world war two where he was batman to David Niven. As well as being a talented actor Peter was also a writer and a gifted linguist. One of his many awards was an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Spartacus. Brandsby Village hall was filled with laughter as we listened to Dominic Goodwin’s entertaining and renditions of some of Joyce Grenfell’s monologues. Brandsby WI meets at 7.30pm on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Brandsby Village Hall. Visitors are welcome. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/brandsbywi

18 News from Crayke C of E Primary School Children at Crayke C of E Primary have all enjoyed curriculum enrichment opportunities this term to support and enhance their learning in the classroom. Class 1 have been making use of our wonderful grounds during their weekly Forest School sessions. Class 2 enjoyed a visit to Millers Fish and Chips in Haxby to develop their seaside topic in which they have been learning about sustainability - they were even able to FaceTime the fishermen in Norway! Class 3 had a fabulous visit to the Centre for Life in Newcastle as part of their topic on earthquakes and returned full of information about the weather and the world. Finally, Class 4 went to York Minster on a Diocese day and learnt all sorts of information about the history of the building and key figures from the past. As a whole school, we enjoyed the opportunity to visit St 's Church for a Candlemas Service. We are very thankful for ongoing parental and community support to help sustain these valuable learning opportunities.

19 Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.
