REARING CALVES

Auctioneer – Bob Mosley

A very respectable entry of nearly 70 calves, most of which were well fleshed and forward in quality, met with keen demand.

Top priced bull calf was £290 for a Limousin X from Mr CWJ Rickard of Blackwater, Truro, closely followed by a British Blue X from Messrs. RM & CD Rundle of Mevagissey, selling for £288. Also of note was a British Blue X from Messrs. JR, PM and DW Treleaven of Trenarren, St Austell which achieved £280.

Top priced Heifer calf was £252 for a Simmental X from Messrs. NH Semmens and Son Ltd of St Levan, closely followed by a British Blue X from Messrs. JR, PM and DW Treleaven of Trenarren, St Austell selling to £225.

A storming tade from start to finish, with all types keenly contested. The National trade has been bolstered by the shorter working week during the Christmas period and increased confidence following the EU trade deal. A fine run of three pens for Bob Coad of Cubert saw his best piuck 45.7kg Texels top at £108.50, purchased by Trevarthens. This was closely followed by a fine pen of 46kg well-finished lambs from Messrs. G.M & J.A. Olver, of Lanivet, which realised £106, bought by J.V. Richards Lts. Setting the premium to 243p/kg for another pen of handyweight Texels from Bob Coad, sold to Jaspers.
