Jensen3, Bruno Robibaro3,4 and Tamar Kinaciyan5 Abstract The numbers of reptiles in homes has at least doubled in the last decade in Europe and the USA. Reptile purchases are increasingly triggered by the attempt to avoid potentially allergenic fur pets like dogs and cats. Consequently, reptiles are today regarded as surrogate pets initiating a closer relationship with the owner than ever previously observed. Reptile pets are mostly fed with insects, especially grasshoppers and/or locusts, which are sources for aggressive airborne allergens, best known from occupational insect breeder allergies. Exposure in homes thus introduces a new form of domestic allergy to grasshoppers and related insects. Accordingly, an 8-year old boy developed severe bronchial hypersensitivity and asthma within 4 months after purchase of a bearded dragon. The reptile was held in the living room and regularly fed with living grasshoppers. In the absence of a serological allergy diagnosis test, an IgE immunoblot on grasshopper extract and prick-to-prick test confirmed specific sensitization to grasshoppers. After 4 years of allergen avoidance, a single respiratory exposure was sufficient to trigger a severe asthma attack again in the patient. Based on literature review and the clinical example we conclude that reptile keeping is associated with introducing potent insect allergens into home environments. Patient interviews during diagnostic procedure should therefore by default include the question about reptile pets in homes. -

It is rain fed land, Department of Zoology, some patches are cultivated by farmers in the form of fields for producing sources of economy, other University of Sindh, Jamshoro- Pakistan large part of desert remains untouched for natural vegetation for livestock, but unfortunately little yield of desert is also affected by variety of insect including locusts. During present study four species of locusts; belonging to four genera Anacridium, Cyrtacanthacris, Locusta and Schistocerca, two subfamilies Cyrtacanthacridinae and Oedipodenae and one family Acrididae were reported from Thar Desert from June 2015 to May 2016. Comparative study revealed that two species Schistocerca gregaria and Locusta migratoria are swarming and destructive while, Anacridium aegyptium and Cyrtacanthacridinae tatarica are non-swarming but are larger in body size and graze more vegetation than both swarming species. Though these four species have ecological and morphological difference but the nature of damage is almost similar. Vuil. was recorded for the first time on Anacridium aegyptium L. in Crete. The insects were fed on pieces of leaf subjected to a serial dilution of spores over three to four orders of magnitute. Comparative studies on the virulence of ß. bassiana (I 91612 local isolate) and Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum (IMI 330189 standard isolate of IIBC) showed that M. anisopliae var. acridum was more virulent than B. bassiana at a conidial concentration lower or equal to 106 per ml while they were similarly virulent on first stage nymphs at 107 conidia per ml. Very few molecular studies on the phylogeny of the karyorelictean ciliates have been car- ried out because data of this highly ambiguous group are extremely scarce. In the present study, we sequenced the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of three morphospecies rep- resenting two karyorelictean genera, Kentrophoros, Trachelolophos, and one haptorid, Trache- lotractus, isolated from the South and East China Seas. The phylogenetic trees constructed using Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and neighbor-joining methods yielded essentially similar topologies. The class Karyorelictea is depicted as a monophyletic clade, closely related to the class Heterotrichea. The generic concept of the family Trachelocercidae is confirmed by the clustering of Trachelolophos and Tracheloraphis with high bootstrap support; nevertheless, the order Loxodida is paraphyletic. The transfer of the morphotype Trachelocerca entzi Kahl, 1927 to the class Litostomatea and into the new haptorid genus Trachelotractus, as suggested by previous researchers based on morpho- logical studies, is consistently supported by our molecular analyses. In addition, the poorly known species Parduczia orbis occupies a well-supported position basal to the Geleia clade, justifying the separation of these genera from one another. -

Klompen Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology Copyright by Hojun Song 2006 ABSTRACT The systematics of Cyrtacanthacridinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae) is investigated to study the evolution of locust phase polyphenism, biogeography, and the evolution of male genitalia. In Chapter Two, I present a comprehensive taxonomic synopsis of the genus Schistocerca Stål. I review the taxonomic history, include an identification key to species, revise the species concepts of six species and describe a new species. In Chapter Three, I present a morphological phylogeny of Schistocerca, focusing on the biogeography. The phylogeny places the desert locust S. gregaria deep within the New World clade, suggesting that the desert locust originated from the New World. In Chapter Four, I review the systematics of Cyrtacanthacridinae and present a phylogeny based on morphology. Evolution of taxonomically important characters is investigated using a character optimization analysis. The biogeography of the subfamily is also addressed. In Chapter Five, I present a comprehensive review the recent advances in the study of locust phase polyphenism from various disciplines. The review reveals that locust phase polyphenism is a complex phenomenon consisting of numerous density-dependent phenotypically plastic traits. -

(Ciliophora, Karyorelictea), Emphasizing the lnfraciliature and Extrusomes Wilhelm Foissner Universität Salzburg, lnstitut für Zoologie, Salzburg, Austria SUMMARY The morphology, infraciliature, and extrusomes of Remanella mwbinwcleata (Kahl, 1933) nov. comb. were studied in live cells, in protargol impregnated specimens, and with the scanning electron microscope. The entire somatic and oral infraciliature consists of diki- netids which have both basal bodies ciliated or only the anterior or posterior ones, de- pending on the region of the cell. The right side is densely ciliated. Its most remarkable specialization is a kinety which extends on the dorsolateral margin from mid-body to the tail, where the kinetids become condensed and associated with conspic- uous fibres originating from the ciliated anterior basal bodies. The left side seemingly has two ciliary rows extending along the cell margins. Flowever, detailed analysis showed that these rows arevery likely a single kinety curving around the cell. The oral infraciliature of Remanella isverysimilartothat of Loxodes spp.,i.e.consistsof fourhighlyspecialized and specifically arranged kineties, whose structure is described in detail. Previous inves- tigations could not determine whether or how the nematocyst-like extrusomes of Rema- nella are extruded. The present study shows that they are discharged, thereby assuming a unique, drumstick-like shape because the roundish extrusome capsule remains attached to the despiralized filament. The data emphasize the close relationship between Remanella and Loxodes, earlier proposed by Kahl, and suggest that they emerged from a common ancestor which looked similar to a present day L oxodes. -

ABSTRACT Acridid communities of urbanized landscapes in Turkmenistan are described for the first time. General peculiarities of formation of acridid communities in urban landscapes are studying for the desert zone. The structure of the communities is determined by soil conditions, types of plant cover and the level of anthropogenic impact on the different urban biotopes. Acridid communities of different urban biotopes are distinguished one from the other by taxonomic and ecological diversity. Many acridid species are associated with tugai (riparian woodlands) and Kopetdag foothills and plain. Special conditions of urban landscapes are promoting the penetration of some acridids, usually described as desert species.
