Local Fair Trade Activity Report – April 2016 – March 2017 Aberdeen - A new Aberdeen Fair Trade shop opened in August 2016 on Union Street and was formally opened by the Lord Provost. - Aberdeen Fairtrade were highly commended at the Fairtrade Campaign Awards 2016 by the Fairtrade Foundation for their innovative event ‘Ferry to a Fairtrade Future’ with NorthLink Ferries. - The University of Aberdeen held various events during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 including a Fair Trade Pop-up Shop and information stall and a lecture on ‘What makes Fair Trade Fair?’ - The Scottish Fair Trade Awards 2016 were held in Aberdeen in November in Books and Beans Café. Aberdeenshire - Mid-Formartine Fairtrade Group hosted a Fairtrade Café Crawl in March to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight where participants could collect stamps to earn free Fairtrade chocolate. - The Acorn Centre in Inverurie hosted a visit from producer Bijumon Kurian during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017. Bijumon spoke about his range of Fairtrade herbs and spices and gave guests a taste of Kerala with his cooking demonstration. - As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, Fyvie School Fairtrade Committee hosted a Big Brew event to raise awareness of Fairtrade and to celebrate their achievements as a ‘Fair Achiever’ school. Clackmannanshire - Students from Forth Valley College staffed a shop selling a range of ethically produced goods in Alloa during Fairtrade Fortnight. A range of products were available and the students were on hand to provide information about Fair Trade Dumfries and Galloway - Malawian rice farmer Howard Msukwa from Kilombero Rice visited Dumfries for several weeks. He met local farmers and campaigners and worked with local engineers to improve the design of pedal driven rice-threshers - The annual Fairer World Fair included several new stalls including Yho Yho from Melrose and Hadeel from Edinburgh. - Dumfries Fair Trade Group took part in the Christmas Tree Festival, organised by the local Flower Club as a charity event. There were hundreds of visitors over the weekend, reaching a wide range of the community. - Dumfries Fair Trade Group also had a stall at a local Wedding Fair to promote Fairtrade Gold. - Dumfries Fair Trade Group joined with local food producers to talk about provenance and fairness at a stakeholder event at Dumfries and Galloway College during Fairtrade Fortnight. - Dumfries Fair Trade Group have joined up with their local Oxfam shop to host bi-monthly events at the shop which focus on Fairtrade and fairly traded goods. - Dumfries Fair Trade encouraged the community to join in with their #DumfriesFairBreak campaign during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017. People from all over the community at work, school, church and at home took part by serving Fair Trade products to friends and colleagues and by sharing the hashtag #DumfriesFairBreak. - Dunscore Primary School received a Fairtrade Foundation Fair Aware Award presented by Colin Smyth MSP during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017. - Dunscore Fair Trade village hosted a Big Brunch event at Dunscore Primary School during Fairtrade Fortnight with fair trade produce and local stalls. Robertson House, 152 Bath Street, Glasgow G2 4TB 0141 353 5611 | [email protected] | www.sftf.org.uk Scottish Charity No: SCO39883 Scottish Company No: SC337384 Dundee - During Fairtrade Fortnight 2017, Dundee Fairtrade held an event at The University of Dundee where visitors could sample Fair Trade food and buy Fair Trade craft products. - Dundee received renewed Fairtrade City status in November 2016. - Dundee Fairtrade ran a stall at the Flower and Food Festival where people could purchase Fair Trade goods and learn more about Fair Trade. - Grove Academy pupils supported Fairtrade Fortnight by having a Fairtrade Break event. East Ayrshire - East Ayrshire celebrated receiving Fairtrade Zone status in December 2016. - East Ayrshire Fair Trade Group organised a Fairtrade Walk in Fenwick to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 - East Ayrshire Fair Trade organised a Fair Trade stall in Fenwick in November 2016, which sold Fair Trade food from around the world. East Dunbartonshire - A coffee morning and Fair Trade fair was held in March at Lenzie Union Church in partnership with Just Trading Scotland, Silver Stag of Scotland, Gavin’s Mill and local Lenzie schools. Children from local schools shared posters, artwork and writing reflecting the Fair Trade principles, which were displayed throughout the church. The event also included crafts for children and a selection of Fairtrade food and gifts. - East Dunbartonshire had their Fairtrade Zone status renewed in March 2017, this was the sixth time East Dunbartonshire had been declared a Fairtrade Zone. - A new Fair Trade shop and café was opened in Milngavie in Gavin’s Mill during Fairtrade Fortnight, the new venture will be run by a consortium of East Dunbartonshire Fair Trade Groups. Gavin’s Mill is situated in an iconic listed building in Milngavie and is ideally placed in the heart of the community. East Lothian - North Berwick Fair Trade Group hosted a Fairtrade Tea event during Fairtrade Fortnight where they welcomed Palestinian Fair Trade producer Lousi Albadawi who spoke about her work as a Fair Trade producer. - North Berwick Fair Trade Group also held a Fairtrade tasting stall during Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 where visitors could taste products and find out more about Fair Trade. Edinburgh - It was announced that Scotland had been re-assessed as a Fair Trade Nation at an event at Stenhouse Primary School in Edinburgh by Dr Alasdair Allan, Minister for International Development and Europe. Hundreds of local people attended the event. The event featured talks from Fair Trade producer Louisi Albadawi, Lord Provost Donald Wilson and Scotmid’s Head of Corporate Communications - During Fairtrade Fortnight 2017, Fair Trade producer Bijumon Kurian spoke at an event held at the One World Shop about his experiences of being a Fair Trade producer. - Edinburgh Fairtrade had a stall at the Fair and Ethical Trade on the Fringe event from the 7-27 August. - The City of Edinburgh renewed their status as a Fairtrade City in May 2016. - During Fairtrade Fortnight, Balerno Fairtrade Group held a ‘Fairtrade Break’ event in the Parish Church hall which was attended by more than 200 people. The event included Fair Trade craft and food stalls, a raffle, baking and children’s activities. Another highlight of the event was the award presentation for the winners of the Fair Trade Poetry competition which Balerno Fairtrade Group ran at Dean Park Primary School. - Balerno Fairtrade Group also launched a Giant Fairtrade Banana picture campaign in local schools, churches, organisations and businesses to encourage these groups to show their support for Fair Trade. - Balerno Fairtrade Group also had representatives at the Fairtrade Fortnight events at both the Scottish and the UK Parliament. - The University of Edinburgh Visions for Change Lecture entitled ‘Human rights abuses in the supply chain: what can we do?’ which explored the link between our day-to-day consumer habits and ongoing human rights abuses with speakers from Oxfam Scotland, Ethical Consumer, APUC and The University of Edinburgh Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability. - The University of Edinburgh also ran an online campaign. They produced and shared graphics related to food, electronics and clothing across social media. - Also at The University of Edinburgh, the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS) ran a competition with the chance to win a Fair Trade hamper by sharing photos of their Fair Trade break with the hashtag #UoEFairtrade on twitter and Instagram. The SRS department also hosted a Fairtrade Break event. - Fair Trade Producer, Bijumon Kurian attended an Edinburgh Rotary Breakfast meeting during Fairtrade Fortnight Fife - Students at The University of St. Andrews held 14 different events over Fairtrade Fortnight 2017, which raised over £150. - Fair Trade producer Louise Albadawi spoke to pupils at Valley Primary School in Kirkcaldy and at Bell Baxter High School in Cupar during Fairtrade Fortnight.
