Kubiesa Abstract The literary vampire of traditional horror has moved away from the horror genre and found a new and unlikely home in the pages of Young Adult multi-volume vampire fiction, where s/he has embraced and indeed vampirised existing YA generic tropes to transform his/her own physicality in unprecedented ways into something uniquely situated within its new socio-cultural and generic position. This vampire has attracted vast audiences to the YA genre, has arguably been responsible for the increase in YA fiction titles available and has captured a unique socio-literary zeitgeist which will never exist again. The nascent YA “neoteric vampire”, as cultural construct, and its transformative body will form the topic of this thesis in relation to Gothic theories of the body and emerging YA critical theory. The novels will be used as an interpretive vehicle for discussion of the cultural context in order to establish a more formalist close reading and context-driven critical discourse. The key themes addressed will include adolescence and physical maturation, religion, sexuality and gender, beauty and food and each of these salient elements of discussion will look to over-arching topics and their use across these thematically specific areas. Such over-arching tropes will include heteronormative feeding, consumption and vampiric gendering. The original contribution to knowledge lies in the study of a newly introduced literary genre and a newly created kind of teen vampire, constructed specifically to speak to contemporary Western teen audiences of the 2000-2010 period like no vampire has before. Kubiesa interdisciplinary, culturally specific critical analysis, from spheres including literary food studies, transformation studies, gender studies and sociology, and Gothic theories relating to the body in metamorphosis. Kubiesa Introduction: The Young Adult Vampire Revolution The geek, the activist, the artist, the quietly attractive one, the intellectual, the outsider, the vampire. Each of these designations is representative of an accepted subject position found in postmodern Anglo-American Young Adult novels where stereotypes of typicalised “popular” high school students are brought to life. The vampire’s inclusion in this list is somewhat surprising because, of course, this construct does not exist in real-life teen academic situations. However, those familiar with earlier versions of the pre-2000s, female-centric YA romance genre may baulk at this list, not because it contains a vampire, but because it does not include the traditionally popularised archetypal YA characters such as the cheerleader, the sports star, the beauty queen and the rich girl/boy. The deliberate removal of these characters as protagonists is representative of shifting social perceptions amongst teens whereby those “every man” character types listed above, who were previously the under dogs and minor literary figures, are now the main characters. The excision of the cheerleader/jock/rich kid types as mean and catty protagonists occurred around the same time as the vampire came to prominence as a YA protagonist. As an opportunistic individual, the vampire found a niche in YA romance novels which had been vacated by the previous apex predators in the form of the rich, beautiful and entitled teens. As a fictional avatar of the intellectual, the geek, the outcast, the quietly attractive one, the artist and the activist, the vampire is well-placed to embody all of these favourable Postmodern prototypes as an arch-prototype because s/he too was once the under dog in his/her own horror genre before

    Speaking of Mysteries: Atonement in Teenage Fantasy Books. by Anne van Gend A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 2 Abstract The question of how we can speak of a transcendent God and God’s relationship with creation has been pondered for millennia. Today particular difficulties arise when communicating Christian atonement theories to a generation for whom the world of the Bible is increasingly foreign, and in a time when theologians and philosophers are questioning both the violence of some atonement theories and the existence of “superior transcendence.” This study explores the presence of biblical motifs in the stories of atonement in young adult fantasy works. It suggests that the use of these motifs to make sense of atonement within fantasy worlds may assist readers to make sense of the same motifs when they are used to portray the Christian story of atonement. The investigation begins by discussing the place of imagination, reason and transcendence in religious language and argues for the centrality of metaphor and myth in religious expression. It suggests that young people today still seek intermediaries—“priests and prophets”—between themselves and the unknown, but they now find them in the fantasy authors who continue to use imaginative language to communicate transcendence. A central trope in contemporary fantasy fiction is that of a death that saves the world. Contrary to the expectations raised by René Girard’s work, these are not the violent deaths of a helpless scapegoat.

When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4.

Becoming-animal involves both a repudiation of the individual for the multiple and the human as the zenith of evolution for a traversal or involution across the speciesist plane of consistency. Deleuze and Guattari delineate the Oedipal animal, the pack animal and the demonic hybridisation of animal, human and imperceptible becom- ings. Various commentators have critiqued and celebrated Deleuze and Guattari’s call to becoming-woman. In his taxonomy of living things Aristotle places women at the intersection of animal and human, so becoming-animal as interstices raises urgent feminist issues as well as addressing animal rights and alterity through becoming-animal. This chapter will invoke questions such as ‘how do we negotiate becoming- animal beyond metaphor?’, ‘what risks and which ethics are fore- grounded that make becoming-animal an important political project?’ and, most importantly, because becoming-animal is a queer trajectory of desire, ‘how does the humanimal desire?’ Anthropomorphism can go either up or down, humanising either the deity or animals, but if the vertical distance is closed in any way, i.e. between God and humans or humans and animals, many are disconcerted. (Adams 1995: 180) For on the one hand, the relationships between animals are the object not only of science but also of dreams, symbolism, art and poetry, practice and practical use. And on the other hand, the relationships between animals are bound up with the relations between man and animal, man and woman, man and child, man and elements, man and the physical and microphysical universe.

Esplatter: How did "The Wizard of Gore" come into being? Weve been looking at doing a bunch of HG Lewis remakes. It took a year to negotiate the deal on Wizard of Gore. Dan, who is the producer who had been with me on "Attic Expeditions," just stayed on it. After that year, we tried to raise money to do a bunch of them. We bought rights to do a couple of them. It became harder to focus on several movies that were super low budget. We almost made "Wizard of Gore" at Universal with a company. We pulled out at the last minute. When you have to accomodate the money on every decision, the chances of you making a good movie is not that good.

Leach1 1 The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA Abstract In human-machine communication (HMC), machines are communicative subjects in the creation of meaning. The Computers are Social Actors and constructivist approaches to HMC postulate that humans communicate with machines as if they were people. From this perspective, communication is understood as heavily scripted where humans mind- lessly apply human-to-human scripts in HMC. We argue that a critical approach to com- munication scripts reveals how humans may rely on ableism as a means of sense-making in their relationships with machines. Using the choose-your-own-adventure game Detroit: Become Human as a case study, we demonstrate (a) how ableist communication scripts ren- der machines as both less-than-human and superhuman and (b) how such scripts manifest in control and cyborg anxiety. We conclude with theoretical and design implications for rescripting ableist communication scripts.
