Collapsed Day – English Department

This year we used the Collapsed Day in English to enable Year 10 students to perform their Spoken Language Endorsement, as part of their GCSE English Language. This part of the course means that students have to perform a short presentation on a topic of their choice and

answer a variety of questions from their audience. They receive a Pass, Merit or Distinction for this and it will be printed on their exam grades slip on results day as well as their certificates when they finally finish the course. The grade in no way affects their final result, it is a separate mark.

As always, the students rose to the challenge and this year we saw presentations ranging from working teenagers, terror attacks, video games in the Olympics, to the discrimination of women. Anyone who missed this day or didn’t get the chance to perform on the day will have further opportunities to do this with their class teacher at appropriate and convenient times. Hamper Challenge

Hampton College supported Hampton Foodbank this Christmas and in doing so, the students competed as a form in the “Hampton Hamper Challenge” as part of the newly formed House Championship.

All tutor groups were provided with a box, with the aim of decorating it and filling it with goodies for those less fortunate at this time of year. Students assisted their form by donating one item of food/toiletries towards their tutor group hamper and really supported a very good cause in the community.

Hampton Foodbank passes on this message… “I am so grateful for all your abundance of gifts for families on Hampton. I am sure the families will appreciate your generosity as a school. The support from the school has been overwhelming! The students caught the vision of giving and also spent time designing their boxes. I am so pleased to be able to partner with the school.” Mrs Judge Assistant Head of School

Hoops Galore

Recently, Polaris Sixth Form have been set a task to organise an event for the entire school, that is engaging and enriching. After many weeks of discussions, planning, permission-asking and designing, we have come up with the greatest inter-school event ever seen by the Peterboroughrian people... HOOPS GALORE!

During the planning stage, it was decided to have all houses compete throughout the morning. Each form would have a team of four people.

When the form came to compete, they would have two minutes and two balls to get as many hoops as possible. This meant that the Polaris Sixth Form took on three roles. We had one timer, one ball collector and one counter per competing form.

The top two forms per house were put through to the final to compete again and have the chance to win our legendary prizes… Celebrations! The final four teams were Polaris – Mr Smith, Rigel – Miss Napier, Sirius – Mr Goode , Vega – Mr Tarpey. The overall winner was Rigel—led by Miss Napier!

Everyone in Polaris Sixth Form contributed to the major success of hoops galore and were able to conduct themselves in a responsible and leading manner. Mrs Weston Head of Sixth Form

Carol Concert

On Thursday 14 December, the Music Department hosted its annual Christmas Carol Concert featuring musical numbers from all Hampton schools: Hampton Hargate, Hampton Vale, Hampton College (Primary and Secondary phases) and Hampton Gardens. Each school choir sang two songs before all singers united on stage for a final combined number ‘Walking in the Air’. The concert also featured the ever-growing Hampton Schools Orchestra, with children from all ages and all schools performing a variety of pieces together, including music from Beethoven’s Choral Symphony, Pirates of the Caribbean and Jingle Bells – a diverse programme!

The Hall was packed out with audience members, who were also invited to participate in four traditional carols, which were accompanied by the orchestra.

Thank you to all children, staff and parents for supporting and contributing to

the event in many different ways.

The Music Department wishes you all a very happy Christmas and we look forward to welcoming you back in the new year for some more musical performances.

Visits and Trips

Aspects of Tragedy—A Level English University of Cambridge Literature Trip

Miss Knowles and Miss Chester really enjoyed On Wednesday 29 November, a group of taking fourteen Year 11 students to the eleven A Level English Literature students University of Cambridge to find out more about went on a trip to the Emmanuel Centre in A-Level choices, combinations and the university London in order to listen to a variety of lectures and presentations on Aspects of application process. Tragedy, which is the theme of the course they are studying. Exemplary behaviour from all and a lovely way to spend a Saturday. Four expert speakers explored literary, social and international perspectives of fictional tragedy, offering strategies for approaching set texts and providing students with invaluable insights and helpful guidance to help them achieve their very best in the examination.

It was a really informative and engaging day, with lots of helpful analysis of the texts the students are studying, from a range of academics and even a professional theatre director.

It was also great preparation for those students who intend to go on to study at university and gave them an insight into how university lectures work, how to be independent and self-reliant learners in order to maximise the information they take away from a lecture.

Blood Brothers Theatre Visit

Blood Brothers by Willy Russell is a key text in English Literature and we had the honour of taking 50 students to see the play at Nottingham’s Theatre Royal in November. With mainly Year 10s who are currently reading it and some Year 11s who had

studied the text last year, we embarked on a fun coach ride and excitement for some being their first time in such a venue.

The students were really well-behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the musical, which they have all come to love from studying. There were certainly a few tears at the end! Zak Reeve & George Phillips The story is set in Willy Russell's native Liverpool and tells the captivating tale of twin boys, separated at birth, only to be reunited by a twist of fate and a mother's haunting secret. If you haven’t seen this international smash hit musical yet, it comes highly recommended! Miss Riotto Acting Head of English

University Trip

On 22 November, as a part of Collapsed Day, Year 12 took a trip to Nottingham Trent University.

As a part of the day, we got a look into the life of university students. The main part of the day was a tour around the city campus, exploring some of the many different courses the university has to offer, including a wide range of activities outside of your chosen course.

All the tour guides were either current students or people who worked for Nottingham Trent University, with the most popular being the tour guide Richard.

Some students who went on the trip said: ‘It was an educationally interesting experience and a good insight into the life at university. It seemed more independent and based on seeing what there is at Nottingham Trent University, it helps us with what to look for at other universities, taking into consideration if the course is more lecture based or independent working, etc.’

Year 12 were invited to take part in workshops looking at topics such as finance, living away from home and what courses to choose. They were also shown an in-depth view of the prospectus, which included courses that we didn’t know existed!

Overall, the day was a huge success for most, which helped expand their minds to the idea of university and what they want for their future plans. Katie Green Year 12 Student

Books 2 Africa

Books 2 Africa

It all started about two years ago, after a marketing visit from an educational publisher. The specifications were changing yet again and they were attempting to sell the new text books for this new specification. It made us think about the waste we had in the stock cupboard from all the old specifications over the last ten years, but not to mention the lack of space we had for storing books that were actually used and up to date. The marketing lady explained that they shipped all of their outdated text books to Africa or India and used local freight companies, who offered to do it for free. We looked into this, but it was really complicated and time soon took over in the new academic year and it was soon forgotten about. Fast forward a year later and an article was seen in the paper about another local school who had used Books2Africa for this very purpose. So here we are, December 2017, ready to ship our outdated books from across the curriculum to poorer areas of the world that will be enriched by these donations. Not only this, but we have also reduced our carbon footprint by not having to recycle them. Over the last few weeks, we have managed to fill 27 boxes – mainly from English and Science – and our Sixth Formers have been really good at organising the teachers, making up the boxes and filling them up. Some even wrote little messages inside a few of the books which was a lovely sentiment. It’s been a real team effort.

Books2Africa is a UK registered charity that is educating people and saving the environment by collecting donated books and sending them to learning institutions in Africa.

According to UNESCO, more than 50% of students who go to school in Africa will not be able to read or write properly after finishing school. This is mainly due to a lack of books and resources.

Instead of being pulped or sent to landfill, books and educational materials are collected from developed countries and

shipped to developing countries in Africa.

The number of African countries that have received book donations from Books2Africa represent the broad scope of their work. So far, they have donated books to projects in the following 15 African countries:

1. Cameroon 2. Ethiopia 3. Gambia 4. Guinea 5. Ghana 6. Kenya 7. Liberia 8. Malawi 9. Morocco 10. Nigeria 11. Somalia 12. Somaliland 13. South Africa 14. Tanzania 15. Togo 16. Uganda 17. Zambia 18. Zimbabwe
