Peterborough Schools’ Cross Country, where I finished 2nd, meaning that I would represent the city at the Cross Country Schools Championships. I finished 5th in this race on a very hilly course, which then meant that I would represent the county in the next round. I was now only one race away from the race that I was hoping to get to. I travelled to Northampton to compete against 4 other counties, making up all of East Anglia. To get through to the English Schools competition I had to finish in the top 8 in my county. In the race I finished 14th out of the five counties, after almost falling over at the start and, more importantly, I finished 6th in the county meaning that I HAD qualified for the English Schools Cross Country Championships! I was so pleased as all of my hard work had paid off.

The final itself will take place in Leeds on the 16th March. Leading up to this I will keep-up my hard work and focus on settling my nerves, in the race I hope to finish in the top 80 as the competition will be strong. I hope to represent the school well in a National Final.

5 N PA’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Goes From Strength To Strength Over the last few months the Cadets at Nene Park Academy have continued to grow. Numbers have risen from 6 in October to a current number of 24. The Cadets have been training hard and recently they have been completing their ‘Skills at Arms’ training which will enable them to use weapons on the firing range when we go away to central camp in July. We recently had 3 promotions, Anton was promoted to Lance Corporal and George and Rosheen were promoted to Corporal. Fantastic commitment shown from these Cadets, great leaders, role models and extremely deserving of their promotions. If your son/daughter is interested in joining the cadets, please contact Vicki Gaffney: vgaffney@ neneparkacademy.org

On Thursday 28th February, I was asked to speak at a Special Educational Needs and Inclusion conference in Peterborough. There was 150 delegates at the conference who were head teachers; SENCos; teachers and members of the LA. The conference took place at Deaf Blind UK in Hampton and I was a guest speaker, alongside some very inspirational people. One of the people I met while I was there, was the aspiring footballer, Charlie Fogarty MBE. He was a very kind individual and we chatted for a while, before having our photograph taken. Charlie has posted this and other pictures on this twitter feed. I also met some inspirational students from , along with their SENCo. I was introduced to the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, who gave me a gift of an Amazon voucher, and had their photograph taken with me on stage. The event was a roaring success and I was told that my speech was very touching. If I have made an impression on anyone and inspired them to believe that everyone can achieve success, then I am happy.

Library Update Since September our library at NPA has continued to grow. We are still filling the shelves with new fiction books for all ages and subject-specific support books for GCSE and A level students. In addition, we have also been extremely lucky to receive a generous donation of books in excellent condition from Ms Southerington’s friend; they have filled an entire bookcase! We would like to say a huge thank you to Helen Harris for her extraordinary generosity.

7 NP A’s Inaugural Pancake Race

This year, we introduced our first ever pancake flipping race. Students were challenged to complete a running race with the added difficulty of flipping pancakes and overcoming a number of obstacles. Students seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and tried their very hardest to win points for their houses. There were a number of individual winners who received a free desert from Pabulum, our school caterers and the King house were victorious. Well done to all students who took part.

Knife Awareness Week As part of a recent knife awareness week PC Martin came in to school to deliver sessions to Year 10 students. These covered the statistics around knife crime and the injuries caused. He also outlined the penalties for being involved with weapons, and the concept of ‘joint enterprise’. The work was illustrated with some real-life stories and our students responded very positively. As part of the week two of our 6th form students also did some undercover work with the police and trading standards to see if shops were willing to sell knives to young people. The results were very positive with almost all of the shops complying fully with the law. This work adds to earlier sessions for Year 9 and we will shortly be delivering lessons to all students about the facts and dangers of knives.

We are pleased to say that 10 of our students achieved this and the whole maths department are extremely proud of them.

8 Our Trip To Lille

At Christmas a group of Year 9, 10 and 11 students went to Lille to visit the Christmas markets and to practise our French. We J’aime le travelled by coach and by ferry. We were very excited about the day planned ahead. When we got to the hotel we checked in and Français we left our suitcases in the rooms, then we explored the town: it was amazing, there was a huge ferris wheel and an enormous Christmas tree. Then we entered the Christmas market and saw lots of stalls full of Christmas products such as stockings, snow globes and ornaments. There was also food and jewellery. We had lots of chances to speak French and to practice our vocab. I think that the trip was a great experience to practise French and to explore a beautiful town at Christmas time! Our Support For Mrs Southerington In June our form (B-ESO) are going to run 1km every day around the field to raise money for Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice. We will run 100km in total between us over one week. We are also doing this to help Mrs Southerington who is taking part in “Race to the Stones”. This race is an ultra-marathon and is 100km which is equivalent to 63 miles but only in two days: Day 1 = 32 miles, Day 2 = 31 miles. She’s trying to raise £6,300 for Thorpe Hall. Thorpe Hall is part of the Sue Ryder charity and specialises in people with cancer and other terminal diseases. It is located in Peterborough and students in our form have had family living there. Mrs Southerington started running long distances in October at the Great Eastern half marathon in Peterborough, but only started preparing for her ultra-marathon in January. 14 Drama Trip to London’s West End At the beginning of February, 40 students from Years 9 to 12 went on a trip to see “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End. This award winning production delves into the mind of Christopher, who we perceive to have asperger’s syndrome, as he tries to solve the mystery of who killed Wellington; his neighbour’s dog. The show was choreographed by Frantic Assembly, a physical theatre company that the students study in school and they were amazed to see the skills and techniques that they have learned coming to life on a professional stage. At the end of the show, they all leaped up with a standing ovation and they are still talking about what a great day it was. DNA Homework

Students enjoyed creating fun and interesting representations of DNA for their homework from Lego, Knex, paper, sweets and straws. There was no limit to our students’ creativity.

Sweetie DNA was by far the most popular, but the model didn’t last very long with hungry students about!

For the P and F day in February the Hub team took a walk to P&F Day Nene Park. Before they embarked the students baked their own snacks to fuel their journey. The cookies they created were light, crumbly and delicious and so did not last long. Throughout the With walk they were given the task of identifying 10 different types of trees by their leaves and bark which The HUB was made all the more difficult by the fact that it was still winter and there were no leaves on the trees! We stopped for lunch at the café and all the students ordered their own food using a limited budget. The students showed excellent independence and confidently interacted with the café staff. The students were very well behaved and were a credit to the Academy.

Time may well wait for no man but we can all do our utmost to make the best use of the time we have.

IF all of this seems like all we do in the Sixth Form is study then far from it. This year we decided on the Teenage Cancer Trust as our charity of choice. Vicki Gaffney – our new Year 12, SSA threw herself into the fund raising with huge zeal. With Mr Goodchild, who was willing to have custard pies thrown at him, the on- going plank competition and various cake sales, the Sixth Form raised just short of £450. NPA has a student body willing to go the extra mile and the impressive amounts raised illustrates this fact.

Ocean floors cease to thrive, Caused by the litter thrown aside, Trees towered with their pride of vibrance, That soon becomes a forest of silence.

Birds that chirp the chorus of dawn, Sat on the branches of the rosebush of thorns, Monkeys swing high from the trees above, Which they soon get forced to let go of,

The birds – they bend the throttle, We throw our plastic bottle.

There were separate competitions for each year group for the boys, as well as an under 13 and under 15 girls tournament. Just shy of 1000 pupils from around the city took part in these events over the half term, an amazing figure. It has been another busy term in the PE department that has enabled our students to access the numerous benefits that taking part in regular sport and physical activity offers. Sport teaches them to be disciplined and focussed, both individually and in a team, and generates respect and inspiration. Sport is a source of great fun and enjoyment but is also vital in fostering young people’s physical, social and emotional development. As a PE department, we look forward to reporting on further sporting endeavours of our pupils in the summer edition of Park Life magazine.
