This is the opposite of how they were sorted in the original forums, but it was easier to build and maintain the archive in this way. Known problems: The polls in the “Software” subsection could not be archived. Many of the URL’s came through as blank lines. The forum software had a flaw: at the start of each discussion topic, it lists the topic name followed by “started by [name]” – but instead of using the name of the person who started the topic, it used the name of the last person to post to that topic. THE INTERNATIONAL ELFQUEST FAN CLUB HANDBOOK 1 ✧ WELCOME TO THE HANDBOOK by Richard Pini You are holding in your hands (if you’ve printed this out) or reading (on your monitor screen) the International Elfquest Fan Club Handbook, a guide that will, we hope, answer your questions about the general workings of the Club. It contains material which originally appeared in the Lodestone, the newsletter of the previous incarnation of the Elfquest Fan Club, as well as information gleaned from your questions and comments over the last twenty years plus. In preparing this handbook, I’ve drawn heavily on earlier editions from the earlier Club; that information worked well then and I have every hope that it will work well now. I have tried to anticipate the kinds of things you might like to know about — like choosing your own elf-name, getting involved with or starting a local Holt, and so on. What I have not done is to try to answer all the questions members ask about the story of Elfquest itself, about things that have happened in the past or might happen in the future. Since Wendy and I began the Elfquest saga, the number of stories and characters has grown beyond our wildest imaginings; there’ve been tales told from the beginnings of the Wolfriders all the way through the future of the World of Two Moons (called in those times, Abode). Warp Graphics has published (or overseen the publication of) dozens of issues of various Elfquest comics, a revised (and thick!) edition of the Elfquest Gatherum, a Wolfrider’s Guide, several paperback novelizations and short story anthologies.. -

Downloaded from sag.sagepub.com at SAGE Publications on December 8, 2012 FANTASY GAMES AND SOCIAL WORLDS Simulation as Leisure GARY ALAN FINE University of Minnesota As the longevity and success of this journal attest, simulation games have had a considerable impact on the scholarly commun- ity, spawning cottage industries and academic specialties. Simu- lation gaming is now well established as a legitimate academic pursuit and teaching tool. Simultaneous with the growth of educational games, the 1970s witnessed the development and popularity of other role-playing games, essentially simulations, which have enjoyment and fantasy as their major goals. These games are known generically as fantasy role-playing games. My intent in this article is to describe the games, discuss the relationship of these games to similar activities (including educational simulations), describe the players, and examine their reasons for participating in this social world. By studying these play forms, researchers who specialize in educational simulations can observe parallels in this leisure activity. TWIXT OCEAN AND PINES: THE SEASIDE RESORT AT VIRGINIA BEACH, 1880-1930 Jonathan Mark Souther Master of Arts University of Richmond, 1996 Robert C. Kenzer, Thesis Director This thesis descnbes the first fifty years of the creation of Virginia Beach as a seaside resort. It demonstrates the importance of railroads in promoting the resort and suggests that Virginia Beach followed a similar developmental pattern to that of other ocean resorts, particularly those ofthe famous New Jersey shore. Virginia Beach, plagued by infrastructure deficiencies and overshadowed by nearby Ocean View, did not stabilize until its promoters shifted their attention from wealthy northerners to Tidewater area residents. After experiencing difficulties exacerbated by the Panic of 1893, the burning of its premier hotel in 1907, and the hesitation bred by the Spanish American War and World War I, Virginia Beach enjoyed robust growth during the 1920s. While Virginia Beach is often perceived as a post- World War II community, this thesis argues that its prewar foundation was critical to its subsequent rise to become the largest city in Virginia. -

JAMES LOWDER’S GAMES TO GIFT 2018 TOP PICK: AZUL PUBLISHER: PLAN B; DESIGNER: MICHAEL KIESLING 2–4 PLAYERS; 8 AND UP; $40 (SUGGESTED RETAIL) In Azul, players are artisans summoned by King Manuel I of Portugal to decorate the Royal Palace of Evora, using the Moorish art of decorative tile. Take turns selecting colored tiles, filling rows on your work board, and then transfer a tile to your section of palace wall. The game ends when the first player completes a horizontal tile row. Scores are based on the display, with points earned for patterns of aligned tiles, number of horizontal and vertical rows, and so on. Azul features simple, elegant rules, but potentially complex choices, as you can select tiles to complete your pattern or to force players choosing after you to select pieces that may go unused and end up costing them points. Gameplay is fast, with the full session taking only 30 to 45 minutes. Earlier this year, Azul won the prestigious Spiel de Jahres for game of the year, to almost no one’s surprise. Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra is a recent reimplementation, with players serving as stained glass window designers. It features translucent pieces in place of the original’s resin tiles and some additional rules. Both versions are wonderful.
