MORITZ WINTER 2016/2017 5 EDITORIAL ABOUT WENDY HOLDENER Wendy Holdener was three years old when she first put on a pair of skis, and only 16 when she joined the Swiss-Ski “C” Squad. The athlete, who was born in Unteriberg in the Canton of Schwyz, won the Combination Disciplines in the overall World Cup in the 2015/16 season. Just 23 old, she is currently the best slalom skier in Switzerland. Wendy Holdener won the small crystal ball in the ABOUT ARIANE EHRAT Super Combination in 2015 /16. A numerous and happy crowd enjoyed another day of exciting ski racing at Sestriere this Sunday in occasion of the maiden giant slalom parallel race organized on the final part of the sunbathed G. Agnelli course. After a series of intense one-to-one battles France’s Clara Direz prevailed in the last final beating little-known Austrian Elisa Moerzinger while Marta Bassino was 3rd after beating her teammate Federica Brignone, one of the two winners in Saturday’s race. After a round of qualification hold in the early morning, 32 competitors fought for points and honor on the short course which turned out to be tougher than expected for some of the favorites as Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova or USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, both on the podium in Saturday’s giant slalom race. Alice Robinson from New Zealand also fell in the first round of 32 as well as Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg. The 25-year-old French racer, who has been racing since seven years on the World Cup tour, was able to score points in three different giant slalom races this season including on Saturday when she was 13th here.

With a brilliant first run performance Mikaela Shiffrin beats Tessa Worley (FRA) by 1''39, laying the foundation for an astonishing victory in the second run. Italy’s Marta Bassino catches up to an amazing third place, equalling her result of 2017. First edition’s winner Federica Brignone finishes 6th. A crowd of 15.000 attended the race in San Vigilio di Marebbe-Kronplatz with great enthusiasm, enjoying a great show on a perfect track under a sunny sky. Mikaela Shiffrin’s first run was one to be remembered, with the current World Cup leader dominating thanks to a flawless performance with bib 5. None of her rivals manage to keep up: Tessa Worley (FRA), who finished 2nd on the Erta race of 2017, is beaten by 1''39, followed by a very strong Petra Vlhova of Slovakia by 1''42. The very first “Princess of the Erta” Federica Brignone, who also finished third last year, was not able to turn her bib 1 into gold this year finishing 6th by 1''61. The previous snowfalls might have had an impact on her race. Marta Bassino’s results after the first run were more promising. After her third place in 2017, she finished 4th by 1''47, with no limits for further improval in the second run. Francesca Marsaglia finishes 14th, local hero Karoline Pichler from Monte San Pietro also qualifies for the second run finishing 19th by a deficit of 3''15.
