Doctor Strangelove
A PPENDI C ES Feature Film Study: Doctor Strangelove Doctor Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Dir. Stanley Kubrick, USA, 1964. Comedy/Satire. Classification PG. 95 min. DVD, Columbia. Historical Themes/Topics War and peace in the 20th century: Cold War, nuclear arms race, atomic energy, social values and climate of 1960s Historical Context According to many historians, rapid advances in science and technology during the 20th century have contributed to making it one of the most destructive eras in world history. Arguably, in a bare-bones approach, history can be characterized as a continuing series of violent attacks between groups of humans. Typically, war is studied in terms of geographic and political realignments. However, something happened to warfare in the 20th century that has changed our collective understanding of war and peace in western societ y. The ability to understand and harness atomic energy is characteristic of the advancements in science and technology in the 20th century. It reflects the attempt among modern scientists to understand the smallest particles that are the building blocks of matter, whether in particle physics, microbiology, genetic research, or the development of the microchip. The development of the atomic bomb allowed humans to develop weapons of mass destruction. For the first time in history, human beings have the power to wipe out entire civilizations in seconds. At the same time, the increasing destructiveness of warfare is communicated with immediacy using modern Doctor Strangelove 133 communications technologies. The fact that mass communications include real images of real people suffering has played a role in developing a modern sensibility of the “other.” Faced with images of the destruction of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, North Americans saw children and families as well as whole neighbourhoods destroyed in the blink of an eye. -
AMELIA Or: Who Do Той Think Той Are? Documentary and Identity in Canadian Literature Stephen Scobie
AMELIA or: Who Do Той Think Той Are? Documentary and Identity in Canadian Literature Stephen Scobie A,.LICE MUNRO'S TITLE Who Do You Think You Are? is one of those finely balanced phrases which subtly shift their meanings depending on which of the six words receives the major stress : Who do you think you are? Who do you think you are? Who do you think you are ? Who do you think you are? Who do you think you are? Who do you think you are ? These various emphases transform the phrase from its pejorative use, to crush presumptuousness, into a serious question on the puzzle of identity. Is identity created by external, objective forces — what other people think you are — or by internal, subjective forces — what you yourself think you are? If you decide to alter your identity by thinking yourself into a new role, how do you go about making this new you manifest to the world? Such questions are pervasive in Munro's book, and they surface even at points where the attention might seem to be focused elsewhere. For instance, the story "Wild Swans" is principally about the bizarre and disturbing circumstances of Rose's sexual abuse by a strange man on a train ; yet the last page of the story is almost totally concerned with the puzzle of identity. The man has claimed to be a minister, but is not dressed as one : that is, his assertion of identity is not backed up by any external evidence. "Was he a minister, really," Rose wonders, "or was that only what he said? Flo had mentioned people who were not ministers, dressed up as if they were. -

Cundy © 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the British naval blockade imposed on Imperial Germany between the outbreak of war in August 1914 and the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles in July 1919. The blockade has received modest attention in the historiography of the First World War, despite the assertion in the British official history that extreme privation and hunger resulted in more than 750,000 German civilian deaths. -

Altman Submitted to the Department of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on February 13, 2015 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science ABSTRACT The International Relations literature has an established view of interstate crises that explains how states pursue victory in terms of signaling resolve. States make gains with credible coercive threats (compellence). In contrast, this dissertation conceives of each crisis as a strategic competition between a challenger seeking to make gains unilaterally by fait accompli and its adversary’s countervailing efforts to set red lines to deter these faits accomplis. After clarifying the neglected concepts of “red line” and “fait accompli,” the dissertation takes up two questions the literature has left unexplored: When are faits accomplis likely to occur? When are they likely to lead to war? The result is a theory of coercive conflict explaining why deterrent red lines that contain any of four weaknesses – types of gray areas, in essence – are especially vulnerable to faits accomplis. -
