CALANDRA, A.B., BRYN MAWR COLLEGE M.A., BRYN MAWR COLLEGE M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor William Moebius In “Engaged, Multicultural Individualism in the Millennial Works of Maryse Condé and Zadie Smith,” I explore the way these authors of the Caribbean diaspora represent the particular challenges characters face when they try to construct individual identities while also managing past traumas and future anxieties in multicultural contexts. I argue that the only path to success is through the development of a humor perspective similar to that of Condé’s and Smith’s third-person narrators, whose humorous, mocking tone, particularly at moments of crisis, creates the critical distance necessary for constructing an autonomous individual identity. The first chapter argues that philosophical insights about unpredictability and interconnectedness in White Teeth and La migration des cœurs unite Smith and Condé with Caribbean theorists Antonio Benítez-Rojo and Edouard Glissant as well as the science of Chaos to form an important part of the millennial zeitgeist. vii The second chapter explores curses, revenge, and satire as indirect ways of writing judgment of the past onto the present in three Condé novels: Traversée de la mangrove, La migration des cœurs, and Célanire cou-coupé. Each novel features an enigmatic central character interpellated by a painful past they cannot ignore. Taken together, these novels represent the characters’ progression toward new forms of authorship and self-determination in the present. The third chapter focuses on how to construct an identity in the present without relying on a sense of belonging: to a family, a nation, an ethnic group, or an ideology. I discuss how characters in Condé’s Desirada and Smith’s White Teeth and On Beauty are prompted by mockery from respected figures in their lives to abandon the original course of their clichéd identity quests and seek new levels of self-awareness instead. This dissertation is therefore organized as a series of insights that build on one another. Nevertheless, the French did not take effective control of their foothold on this continent until 7^ years later when Samuel de Champlain founded the settlement of Quebec in 1608, at the foot of Cape Diamond on the St. Laurence River. At first, the settlement was conceived of as a trading post for the lucrative fur trade, but two difficul­ ties soon becam,e apparent—problems that have plagued French Canada to the present day—the difficulty of comirunication across trackless forests and m.ountainous terrain and the rigors of the Great Canadian Winter.

    What Does It Mean to Write Fiction? What Does Fiction Refer To?

    What Does It Mean to Write Fiction? What Does Fiction Refer to? Timothy Bewes Abstract Through an engagement with recent American fiction, this article explores the possibility that the creative procedures and narrative modes of literary works might directly inform our critical procedures also. Although this is not detailed in the piece, one of the motivations behind this project is the idea that such pro- cedures may act as a technology to enable critics to escape the place of the “com- mentator” that Michel Foucault anathematizes in his reflections on critical dis- course (for example, in his 1970 lecture “The Order of Discourse”). The article not only theorizes but attempts to enact these possibilities by inhabiting a subjective register located between fiction and criticism—a space that, in different ways, is also inhabited by the two literary works under discussion, Renee Gladman’s To After That and Colson Whitehead’s novel Zone One. (Gladman’s work also provides the quotations that subtitle each half of the essay.) Readers may notice a subtle but important shift of subjective positionality that takes place between sections I and II. 1 “What Does It Mean to Write Fiction? What Does Fiction Refer to?” These two questions are not mine—which means that they are not yours, either. They are taken from a work of fiction entitled To After That by the American writer Renee Gladman. I hesitate to call them a quotation, for, although they appear in Gladman’s book, the questions do not exactly belong to her narrator; or rather, they do not belong to the moment of Gladman’s narration.

ISBN 90 70754 177 Printed in the Netherlands Preface At the beginning of the 1980’s, the International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI) approached the Dutch Directorate of International Cooperation (DGIS) with a proposal that DGIS assist in financing an ILRI publication entitled Health and Zrrigation. This publication would be concerned with health care in irriga- tion projects in areas where water-related diseases (e.g. malaria, schistosomiasis, filar- iasis, onchocerciasis) were endemic or could become endemic through the implementa- tion of water-resources-development projects. Before any irrigation project is planned, implemented, and operated, ILRI feels that a study should be made of the project’s potential consequences for human health. This study should be holistic and multidisciplinary; it should identify any expected negative effects on human health, and should make a cost-benefit analysis of the mea- sures that need to be taken to prevent, treat, and control any of the identified diseases. Morris ii ABSTRACT Shame as an emotional response in the late 2010s has been discussed in both high and low sectors, from a high level of shame with social media use in high school classrooms, to the lack of shame by the president of the United States. My thesis addresses the topic by analyzing Karl Ove Knausgaard’s two autobiographical works, My Struggle and his Seasonal Quartet. Readers, critics, and Knausgaard himself have described his work as a focus on the shameful moments of his life. Using positive psychology’s term “explanatory style,” coined by Martin E.P. Seligman, I do a structural reading of explicit moments of shame. Combining this with computer text-analysis software, Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, devised by James Pennebaker, I create a thorough reading of shame in Knausgaard’s work. The thesis addresses the question of shame’s effect on the style of writing for the multiple volumes, as well as document possible moments of pessimistic mental health. I conclude that Knausgaard operates in typical literary arcs, regardless of his self-proclaimed thesis statement, and I discuss the importance of emotional changes in Knausgaard’s work. Cundy © 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the British naval blockade imposed on Imperial Germany between the outbreak of war in August 1914 and the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles in July 1919. The blockade has received modest attention in the historiography of the First World War, despite the assertion in the British official history that extreme privation and hunger resulted in more than 750,000 German civilian deaths.
