PROMISE OF PATRIOTISM

Patriotism? Is it brought about by terrorism? Or when in war countries lie? Or when innocent people die? Is it only on 15th and 26th Or just during the Olympics? Why are only these days celebrated selected And the other days the country is disrespected? True patriotism is love, Working hard for the country to develop It is youth’s passion At all times to express compassion. Dedication, perseverance and altruism Is the true promise to patriotism. “Promises are meant to be broken”, they said, With tears in their eyes. “Not this one”, replies the man in green as he Waved them goodbye for what could be the last time. The vow he made ages since seemed like it was made yesterday. Memories of the past, the ones he loved and the ones he lost, flooded his head, clear as day. His body, motionless; hid mind, restless. Life, ebbing away. A voice in his heart, a promise of the past Was all that remained. But the unwavering voice and undauntable spirit Did pledge his allegiance. An oath of honour he did take, A vow of valour he did make, And the promise of patriotism MAHEK AGARWAL To his nation, was made. 11 – MGT 3253 PROMISE OF PATRIOTISM

Their coffins draped in the tricolour, Their ashes reunited with this great realm. When they first took the oath of a soldier, They vowed to serve and protect forever

They pledged their devotion to this great nation, They assured the people of their sincerity. They pledged their life for the nation, And fought fearlessly for posterity.

They are the embodiment of a true patriot Unaffected by the enemy’s might Not a prayer on their lips to survive Not a string of beads in their hands Not a thought of cowardice to distract their minds. NAMRATA RAVI KARANI 11 – MGT 3290 PROMISE OF PATRIOTISM

The unsung songs did play, I had nothing left to say. The legends did my land speak, The unknown knowledge did I seek.

The sea did tell me stories, And beautifully wipe out all our worries. The sun did raise with all its grace, Happiness is all I saw in people’s face.

For nobody can measure my land’s glory, The people’s heart that the land did carry. For there can never be enough praise for my motherland, It’s harder than counting the grains of sand.

With a heavy heart, She bid farewell; Knowing that this start Might be the last. But, she stood stiff and head held high, with every strike making her proud, every tear without a sigh. A mixed feeling it was – A joy, both proud and sad For this start, Was the very last.

He had a few more minutes, He had a million hearts to win. Done this all his life. A thousand proud eyes on him. Seventeen years, and three days And even more eyes to keep The youngest ever they said. But he saw only him.

Yet for the first time ever The stranger was there, He felt…different. The stranger whose body was saffron and green, Maybe this is what they called fear. The stranger whose flag covered his face.

Unlike most others “Make her proud” it said He had never felt it, Now he was ready His legs turned weak, He had nothing, then… Maybe he wouldn’t do it; The gunshot. Maybe this was it.

But that’s when he saw him Not mom, not dad, But the stranger. VIGNESHWAR KANDEEBAN 12 – SCI 2865
