The bore and stroke are 82mm by 94mm, or 499cc. One of the earliest surviving original Nortons, over 100 years old and still going strong. 168 1914 Rover Sturmey Archer 3 ½ Pre 1950 Bike Details: Found languishing in a garage, last used in 1972, as witnessed by an old tax disc. Not a barn find but a garage find. 136 1919 Douglas ES 2¾ Pre 1950 Lightweight Bike Details: First time at this Show. 55 1920 Douglas W20 2 ¾ Pre 1950 Lightweight Bike Details: The Douglas W20 is the top-of-the-range Deluxe model of the 1920 2 ¾ models. It's fitted with footboards, three-speed gearbox, clutch and kickstart. This machine was left in a London motorcycle dealership in non-running, derelict condition for many years. Purchased when the dealer closed in 2005, it was restored by the owner in time for the Douglas centenary in 2007 and used for London Douglas Club events and other events such as the Brooklands Great War meeting last year. 45 1920 Norton TT 3½ Pre 1950 Competition / Special Bike Details: One of the first machines built when Norton moved to the Bracebridge Street factory in 1920. Surprisingly light and fast to ride, in its day lapped Brooklands track at 90mph. At this time Nortons were winning at Brooklands and the Isle of Man. This bike was found in Ireland where a lot of Nortons were sold after the TT. It still has its original log-book. 10 1925 Levis 6 port 250 Pre 1950 Lightweight Bike Details: First registered 18 May 1929, the first year of production for this model fitted with a 6 port two- stroke engine. It has been restored. 24 1926 Raleigh 14 250 Pre 1950 Lightweight Bike Details: In one family ownership from 1926 to 1986, then in dry storage until 2015. Since I have owned this bike I have used it for track days, shows and in 1997 for the Classic Parade on the Isle of Man. The bike is unrestored. 77 1928 AJS K6 350 Pre 1950 Bike Details: This bike has an engine from the AJS works Experimental / Development Dept at Graiseley Hill, Wolverhampton. AJS Wolverhampton Works Bike After completion of their development programme these machines were often used for works competition purposes. This CS1 had been used by the previous owner for couple of years before being taken off the road as it needed a few jobs doing. Other events took over and it was never finished. He has decided now that it is too far down the list so it will never get done. First time at this Show. It is incredibly original the exception of the alloy mudguards and the Amal carb, it should have a two-jet Binks, anyone got one? As such it is undergoing careful re-commissioning rather than a full restoration to keep as much of the patina as possible. It’s nearly finished and I’m hoping to have it on the road this summer. 171 1928 Scott Flying Squirrel 600 Pre 1950 Bike Details: First registered November 1928. 90 1929 Matchless V2 500 Pre 1950 Bike Details: A sporting machine, originally marketed by Matchless with a guaranteed speed of 85 mph. 21 1929 Norton 18 500 Pre 1950 Competition / Special Bike Details: This machine was heavily raced in the 1950's & 60's by the previous two owners. In stripped-down form it has completed many laps of Brands Hatch and Montlhéry. It has been a regular entrant in the Irish International Rally and The Westward Ho! Night trial. Completed the 'Resuscitation Run' (ie Mouth to Mouth), passing through every town in England with 'mouth' in the name, starting from Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight and finishing 1961 miles and 8 days later in Bournemouth, 31 towns in all. It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to one of our own, again. Bob Ward was a great Friend and Brother and he passed away doing what he loved the most. We will all miss your friendly, helpful, loving per- sonality. Till we meet again. The BIG ride 2010, which was a history making event, was the Scooter Ride, spearheaded by none other than ―Big Daddy‖ Ed Dacus. SO WE THOUGHT . What a great job and a GREAT ride. That was last April. But the REALLY BIG RIDE of 2010 was the November Scooter Ride. The November event brought out 112 people and a total of 97 bikes, 50 of which braved the elements and actually rode the three stop shop tour laid out by Big Daddy and Shane Dorton.

I’m still learning this publishing thing, so bear with me, I’ll get bet- ter. I thought I’d make my mark right from the get go, so there’s a bit of Canadian content (or CanCon, as it’s officially called back home) with an article by my mate Craig Egan about his own Norton Commando. Craig and I met through our mutual appreciation of Nortons, and quickly became good friends, going on many road trips, usually in search of a French Canadian delicacy called ‘poutine’. Craig handled most of the details involved with purchasing my current Norton and sending it to Australia. Another change you might notice is the ‘Norton News’ over the next page. There’s still so much going on with Norton motorcycles around the globe, from Stuart Garner manufacturing modern Commandos, Peter Williams creating bespoke replicas of the legendary JPNs, to small companies dedicated to helping us common folk keep our original machines on the road (although what makes an ‘original’ Norton is subjective).

  • The PW3 Camshaft I Want to Tell You How to Design a Cam. Please Don't
The PW3 Camshaft I want to tell you how to design a cam. Please don’t be frightened; it certainly won’t hurt and it should be fun. I’ll start with some basics from everyday life. A metre is about the same as a yard; just three inches more. A strolling speed is one metre per second. The first graph below shows a straight, horizontal line at level of 1metre per second and 10 long indicating that the stroll lasted just 10 seconds. The second graph indicates the number of metres covered for each of the 10 seconds of the stroll. 15 10 5 Series eed p 1 S 0 0 5Time 10 15 01020 Constant speed Distance at constant speed Think now of a block of something that has a mass of 1 kilogram sitting on a really slippery surface of a table. When you push on the block with a force of 1 Newton it will be accelerated at 1 metre per second per second, i.e. 1 metre more for each second you push it. The acceleration is represented on a graph you can see on the left below. The block will start to move and will go faster and faster and the middle graph shows how the speed of the block increases during the 10 seconds of the 1 Newton push. And the way the distance of the block increases from its starting point as the speed increases during the 10 seconds is shown on the graph on the right, below. istance Velocity D Acceleration 0 5Time 10 15 0 5Time 10 15 051015Time The force of 1 Newton is named after Isaac Nerton who put forward the rules of motion and the rules that scientists and engineers live by.
