It’s a perfect describer of Suzuki’s first-generation GSX-Rs. Because if ever there was a ‘radically new’ motorcycle, or one that was ‘beyond established principles,’ it was Suzuki’s 1985 GSX-R750 – and the GSX-R1100 that followed in ’86. As one motorcycle journalist wrote in 1985, “Sportbikes will soon be divided into two categories: before the GSX-R, and after.” Nicely put. The instant it debuted in late 1984 at Germany’s Cologne show, the GSX-R750 electrified the motorcycle world. Few in attendance, or those who read about the bike in motorcycle magazines in later months, could fully absorb the bike’s radical full-fairing look, its astounding dry weight, or the idea that careful and conservative Suzuki had built – and planned to sell! – what was basically a road racer with lights. It certainly looked the part. With its clip- ons, dual headlights, ultra-lithe aluminum chassis and purposeful, business-only stance, the GSX-R appeared as if it might have rolled into the viewing hall after an hour-long endurance-race session at LeMans or Suzuka. -

Colin Seeley Colin Began His Career As an Apprentice with Harcourt
Speaker: Colin Seeley Colin began his career as an apprentice with Harcourt Motorcycles. By 1954 and aged just 18, Colin had branched out on his own and secured premises in Belvedere, Kent, which laid the foundations for his successful dealership and workshop. During that same year, Colin also entered his first race at Brands Hatch, riding a borrowed 500cc BSA Star Twin. 1960 saw Colin and his friend acquire a sidecar outfit based on a Manx Norton which they raced for the first time that year at Snetterton. Just one year later in 1961, Colin entered his first Grand Prix event, the Isle of Man TT this time using a Matchless G50 modified and fitted with a Canterbury racing sidecar and achieved 6th place. Colin raced in numerous competitions between 1961 and 1967 including the British and world championship sidecar competitions. Using his own design of machines achieved a first place in the 1964 Dutch TT and 2nd in the Isle of Man TT sidecar competition not to mention coming close to winning the world championships. Through the mid to late 60’s Colin concentrated more and more on the design and construction of Seeley framed racing motorcycles. By the late 60’s and into the early 70s (by which time nearly all the major motorcycle manufacturers had pulled out of Grand Prix racing) the Seeley designed frame became the first choice for the privateer racers of that era. In 1969 the Mark 3 version of the Seeley racing frame was adapted to house the Norton Commando 750 motor and by that time Colin’s designs had become so successful in competition that he deservedly earned a reputation as one of the best motorcycle frame designers in the industry. -

HARLEY DAVIDSON 1914 MODEL 10C 1 CYL 565CC IOE 3005 SOLD Harley–Davidson 1914 Model 10C 565 cc IOE single engine # 6541DG In 1911 the company presented their first V-twins and very soon these models became the customers’ favourites; it seems singles were most popular for utility uses and in the export markets. In 1910 almost 3,200 singles were sold; in 1913 this number had almost doubled but in 1914 the output of singles had fallen to a little more than 3,200. That same year some 15,000 twins left the factory, so we can safely conclude that a ’14 single is a rare beast. In C-trim the machines had a two speed gear in the rear hub and a clutch, which was new for the 1914 model year. Other novelties included an externally contracting band brake acting on a separate rear drum and a Step Starter, an early form of a kickstart but with a forward stroke. Bore and stroke dimensions were 84.14 x 101.6 mm and the engine delivered about 5 hp @ 2,200 rpm, good for a top speed of 80 km an hour. The 1914 V-twin model was good for 9 hp @2,400 rpm. With a weight of 90 kilos the single was as much as 50 kilos lighter than the twin. -

It’s a fantastic moment in time and unlikely ever to be repeated. Can you imagine English Heritage letting nasty, oily motorcyclists, let alone their nastier, oilier bikes(!) anywhere near Stonehenge now? I mean, we wouldn’t want to damage the stones that have survived 4000 years with our BSAs… Stonehenge Section visits..............Stonehenge. By Betsy Barber. In the late 80's when I was Madame Chairman of the Stonehenge Section the committee decided it would be a good idea for local publicity to have a photo of the Section taken at the stones. The photo could be circulated to the local press and, as it happened, I had a good contact at the Salisbury Journal in the form of Roger Elliott their staff photographer. We, myself and the late Commander Francis Hay RN a committee member, approached the authorities to gain permission to assemble a group of members and their bikes behind the barriers but in front of the stones. -
