Because the city of Rome holds a particularly important place in the ancient Roman imagination, leaving it is always fraught for the Romans. The Augustan period is especially apt for my study because it features great changes both in Rome’s urban landscape and its political and cultural environment. The Augustan age brought about a new cohesive vision of Rome and its physical space which did not exist in the republican period and profoundly impacted how the Romans perceived their city and their connection to it. My dissertation investigates episodes in Horace, Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid, and Livy which discuss departure, absence, or alienation from Rome in order to reveal how Latin literature of this period reflects this complex connection and responds to these great changes in the city. A major focus of my dissertation is on the diversity of perspectives on the city and departure from it in these texts. In Ovid’s exile poetry, despair and alienation from the city occur as a result of exile. In Livy, upheaval in Rome leads to characters being exiled or feeling that they no longer belong to their city and must abandon it. Propertius characterizes absence from Rome as a hindrance to love and elegiac poetry. In these authors, leaving Rome causes despair and loss of personal or poetic identity. By contrast, Horace and Tibullus’ texts feature rejection of the city in favor of life in the country and express relief at being away from the city. Each of these texts thus reveals a unique outlook on the city and the shared experience of departure from Rome. One relevant body of secondary literature is the study of exile in Latin literature, which currently comprises most of the scholarly discussion of Romans leaving Rome. Claassen, Gaertner, and other scholars who have written about exile in Latin literature have focused on texts written by authors who were themselves exiled, including Cicero, Ovid, and Seneca. I expand on these studies by discussing exile in Livy, who was not exiled himself, but wrote about the exile of important figures such as Camillus and Coriolanus. My project also goes beyond the current scope of exile studies by examining willing departures from Rome, thereby providing a wider variety of perspectives on detachment from the city. Because my study raises questions of migration, travel, and how people perceive the place they call home, modern theories of space, place, and landscape (see Cosgrove, Gregory, Schama, de Certeau, Williams, et al.) serve as a lens through which to consider the ancient sources. This is an expanding area of research both within Classics and in the social sciences and Geography. Much of this research focuses on the relationship between culture and space, including how space creates identity and memory and how people and authors appropriate and engage with their physical surroundings. Work of this kind, including studies of how Roman authors use Roman space to create meaning in their work (see Edwards, Jaeger, Welch, Vasaly, et al.), has tended to emphasize how people engage with spaces to which they belong or in which they are present. My dissertation contributes to this work by considering how people engage with spaces when alienated or absent from them. As others have examined how connection to a place creates identity and memory, my project studies how absence and alienation from a place destroy or modify identity and memory. These questions look beyond the immediate field of Classics and therefore make my dissertation interdisciplinary. The dissertation is organized into four chapters arranged by genre and divided into two parts: Part I: Present Departures and Part II: Past Departures. Part I includes Chapter 1 on Horace’s Satires and Chapters 2-3 on the love poetry of Tibullus and Propertius and the exile poetry of Ovid, while Part II includes Chapter 4 on Livy’s first decade. The texts in Chapters 1-3 provide examples of contemporary departures in the first person, while Chapter 4 examines more remote third person departures by famous figures from the Roman past. The final section of the dissertation, entitled, “Epilogue: Future Departures,” serves as a conclusion and looks forward to further work on the topic by briefly considering alienation and departure from Rome in the imperial period in Juvenal’s third satire. I was amazed at how personally attached I had become to a foreign city in such a short time, and I reflected on both the general phenomenon of human attachment to place and in particular on the city of Rome’s power to captivate its natives and visitors, both ancient and modern. This experience ultimately led to the idea for this study, which explores how Roman authors of the Augustan period write about leaving Rome as a way of discussing different levels of attachment to the city.

To repress the war torts, as well as to overcome the soldiers’ resistance, which at moments was violent, the king (rex) himself at first and the highest new established magistrates i.e. consuls (consules) afterwards, have been using various constrained acts. The authority of such enforcement against Roman soldiers sprang from their “military imperium” (imperium militiae). As most important criminal and judicial organs in conditions of war, responsible for maintenance of the military courtesy, were introduced the military commander (dux) and the array and their subsidiary organs were the cavalry commander, military legates, military tribunals, centurions and regents. These investigations have, however, largely privileged the importance of these activities to the upper levels of society. Attempts to examine the responses of the lower classes to death, and its consequent demands for disposal and commemoration, have focused on the activities of freedmen and slaves anxious to establish or maintain their social position. The free poor, living on the edge of subsistence, are often disregarded and believed to have been unceremoniously discarded within anonymous mass graves (puticuli) such as those discovered at Rome by Lanciani in the late nineteenth century. This thesis re-examines the archaeological and historical evidence for the funerary practices of the urban poor in Italy within their appropriate social, legal and religious context. Three of the bishops were called Salomon, one being the uncle of the following.ii The noble family they belonged to is not known, but they possessed land on the southern shore of Lake Constance, in the province of Thurgau. Salomon III. was educated in the monastery of Saint Gall, and prepared especially for the episcopate. Maybe his uncle and granduncle also benefitted from such an education. Even their predecessor, bishop Wolfleoz, started his career as monk in Saint Gall. It is likely that the three Salomons were given their names with the wish, that they once would gain this office.

The rhetorician Quintillian regarded his Odes as almost the only Latin lyrics worth reading, justifying his estimate with the words: "He can be lofty sometimes, yet he is also full of charm and grace, versatile in his figures, and felicitously daring in his choice of words." Horace also crafted elegant hexameter verses (Sermones and Epistles) and scurrilous iambic poetry (Epodes). The hexameters are playful and yet serious works, leading the ancient satirist Persius to comment: "as his friend laughs, Horace slyly puts his finger on his every fault; once let in, he plays about the heartstrings". Some of his iambic poetry, however, can seem wantonly repulsive to modern audiences. His career coincided with Rome's momentous change from Republic to Empire. An officer in the republican army that was crushed at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, he was befriended by Octavian's right-hand man in civil affairs, Maecenas, and became something of a spokesman for the new regime. For some commentators, his association with the regime was a delicate balance in which he maintained a strong measure of independence (he was "a master of the graceful sidestep") but for others he was, in < a href="http://www.poemhunter.com/john-henry-dryden/">John Dryden's</a> phrase, "a well-mannered court slave".

Stephens In “The Transformation of the Husband/Wife Relationship during Exile: Let- ters from Cicero and Ovid” (2001), Sabine Grebe argues that Cicero and Ov- id’s letters from exile reveal a transformation of the marital relationship and its gender roles. In traditional, patriarchal Roman society the wife was depen- dent upon and subordinate to the husband in many ways. The wife’s activities were restricted to the private, domestic realm. The husband was engaged in public, legal, and political matters. The wife cooked, made and washed clothes, cared for the husband and the children, or supervised slaves in these tasks, and nursed ill slaves. The husband handled the finances. The wife de- pended on her husband for emotional support and comfort. The husband bore this burden as the stronger partner. These traditional arrangements were reversed, Grebe observes, when the orator Cicero and the poet Ovid were banished. Grebe notes that both hus- bands could have chosen to take their wives with them into exile, but both decided their interests would be better served by having their wives remain in Rome. By doing so Cicero’s wife Terentia and Ovid’s wife (whose name we do not know) could protect their family’s estates, manage finances, and more effectively advocate for their husbands’ return. It is uncertain whether these arrangements were supposed to be practical advantages for the wives, the husbands, or both. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Thesis abstract One of the major duties performed by the censors of the Roman Republic was that of the lectio senatus, the enrolment of the Senate. As part of this process they were able to expel from that body anyone whom they deemed unequal to the honour of continued membership. Those expelled were termed ‘praeteriti’. While various aspects of this important and at-times controversial process have attracted scholarly attention, a detailed survey has never been attempted. The work is divided into two major parts. Part I comprises four chapters relating to various aspects of the lectio. Chapter 1 sees a close analysis of the term ‘praeteritus’, shedding fresh light on senatorial demographics and turnover – primarily a demonstration of the correctness of the (minority) view that as early as the third century the quaestorship conveyed automatic membership of the Senate to those who held it. It was not a Sullan innovation. In Ch.2 we calculate that during the period under investigation, c.350 members were expelled. When factoring for life expectancy, this translates to a significant mean lifetime risk of expulsion: c.10%. Also, that mean risk was front-loaded, with praetorians and consulars significantly less likely to be expelled than subpraetorian members.

The latter in particular are the most indicative for the presence of walls in the area and through their craftsmanship and techniques being used one can closely relate these defensive structures to the walls in Asia Minor and the Greek mainland. The area examined in this paper, lies from ancient Apollonia Pontica on the Bulgarian coast and clockwise to Kerch Peninsula.When establishing in these places, Greeks created emporeia which later on turned into powerful city states. However, in the early years of colonization no walls existed as Greeks were starting from zero and the construction of walls needed large funds. This seems to be one of the reasons for the absence of walls of the Archaic period to which lack comprehensive fieldwork must be added. This is also the reason why the Archaic period is not examined, but rather the Classical and Hellenistic until the Roman conquest. The aim of Greeks when situating the Black Sea was to permanently relocate and to become autonomous from their mother cities. In order to be so, colonizers had to create cities similar to their motherlands. More specifically, they had to build public buildings, among which walls in order to prevent themselves from the indigenous tribes lurking to chase away the strangers from their land.

In times of war it was close to impossible to proceed in a moral and peaceful way. Augustus’ claims as an example of order and good morals would obviously be damaged by his troubling past. Therefore the memory of the civil war against Anthony culminating in the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. needed some conscious adaptations for Augustus’ later representation. The now well known history and literature of the civil war are mostly written in an Augustan perspective, a history of the winner. This thesis will try to answer the following question: How did Augustus adapt the memory of his troubling past of his civil war against Anthony in his commemoration practices? The civil war and the decisive battle of Actium play important but controversial roles in Augustan commemoration. Details of the civil war often were deliberately camouflaged or concealed in Augustan sources.

You must have at least 3 separate sources. Some of the topics have audio clips that can be used as one of your sources, but you must have other sources. 4. You will need to read Livy’s “ab urbe condita” [“From The Founding of the City”] in translation to get the best parts of the story. Some of you can listen to the audio files, but not all stories are there. I have linked several sources on our DISD Latin page.
