Recognisances and Records of Victuallers and Alehouse Keepers From 1551 the law required registers to be kept by Quarter Sessions across the country, organised according to wapentake (a now obsolete administrative unit). The records included the name of the innholder or alehouse keeper, the township in which he or she operated, the amount of penalty he or she would be liable to for any infringement of the law, and the name and place of residence of whoever was standing surety for the licensee’s ‘good behaviour’. In most cases the name of the inn or alehouse was not included. An Act of 1822 (3 George II cap. 31) amended earlier legislation and for most, but not all, townships, the name of the licensed premises was included in the registers. The Alehouse Act 1828 abolished sureties and recognisances. An example of how 1828 legislation was applied is provided for the Kings Arms in Bentham with William Turner the licensee liable for £30 and James Burton who stood surety of £20 for Turner (West Riding QE32/75, 15 September 1828). Mrs Kirby confirmed that the West Witton wall-hanging is due to be unveiled at the Village Hall, at a Bring & Share supper on Bank Holiday Monday, and hoped that the children in the Parish would be able to collect their Jubilee mugs on the night. Smorthwaite Garden seat and new village sign at Grassgill A Diamond Jubilee Memorial Bench has been ordered, and is due to be delivered in 6-8 weeks.

This is the next step to making the network live; however, at this stage we are still unable to give a confirmed date as to when residents will be able to connect to the network. Our use cases are progressing. We have fitted sensors for the Environmental Monitoring use case. This will allow us to explore how 5G can support the monitoring of river flows including the speed and height of water. This use case will support the County Councils Highways team to offer a more proactive service to local areas ensuring that early warnings can be given for potential flooding risks as well the monitoring of infrastructure. This means bridges can be fixed before problems that are more serious occur. Further information about this work will be released over the next month. Some pictures of these sensors are below. On the Tupgill Estate we will be working across the site to explore how 5G can support rural businesses. This will include the work we are doing with Forbidden Corner as well as the enhancement of the customer experience at The Saddle Rooms, tank sensors to monitor off mains supplies as well as body sensors supporting elite horse training. Our team were on site last week to fit and test the equipment. These use cases will now wait for the network to go live to move forward.
