He also set the six-furlong track record at Gulfstream Park in an allow- ance race, a mark that stood for nearly 20 years. What no one could have predicted was the impact Mr. Pros- pector would have on the Thoroughbred breed. When Abraham I. “Butch” Savin began bidding on the son of Raise a Native out of Gold Digger, by Nashua, he had the colt’s future as a stallion prospect in mind. Trainer Jimmy Croll encouraged the purchase, calling him “the best-looking yearling I had ever seen” (a somewhat confusing statement in modern times, when Mr. Prospector is well known to have had knees that made some breeders cringe). Savin and Croll were bidding together until the price hit $100,000, and then Croll, having never spent such a figure on a horse before, told Savin he was on his own. Legend has it that Croll began star- ing intently at his shoes until bidding ended. Soundness was not a theme in Mr. Prospector’s career, un- fortunately. He bucked his shins at two and had to be pinfired. ASK RAY QUESTION: Who’s the leader of the 3-year-old male division right now? ANSWER: You could throw a blanket over at least five or six of them – that’s how close together they are. Three separate Triple Crown race winners and Good Samari- tan beats two of them in the Jim Dandy. Girvin wins the G1 Haskell and Irap beat Girvin in the G3 Ohio Derby. (Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016) – Paul Lichtefeld and Jack Stewart ’s Engaginglee collected her first stakes victory with a determined head victory over Miss Pink Diva in Saturday’s 33 rd running of the $100,000 Locust Grove Presented by TwinSpires.com (Grade III) for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs. Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Luis Saez , Engaginglee covered the 1 1/16 miles on a muddy main track in 1:46.24. Odds-on 3-5 favorite Ahh Chocolate struggled over the surface and finished last. Innovative Idea led the field of six distaffers through fractions of :24.93, :49.32 and 1:13.75 with Engaginglee racing comfortably in last during the early stages of the two-turn race. On the far turn, Engaginglee began to pass rivals from the outside and drew even with Miss Pink Diva, who poked her head in front at the top of the stretch. Engaginglee kicked on well and was fully extended to narrowly prevail. “It was a great trip,” Saez said. “She was coming from behind. She broke well and we saved ground and when I asked her she responded very well. I had a little more left, she was hanging a little bit but she battled back and fought very well.” The victory was worth $61,380 to Engaginglee and increased her earnings to $313,620 with a record of 23-4-6-4.

FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2017 SCAT DADDY STARRING AT ROYAL ASCOT HORSES SAVING VETS, by Bill Oppenheim VETS SAVING HORSES After the first race at Royal Ascot Thursday, the five-furlong G2 Norfolk S. for 2-year-olds, Coolmore Ashford=s late great Scat Daddy had already chalked up three winners in the first 13 races--one a day, so far. Two were for 3-year-old fillies for trainer Wesley Ward: Lady Aurelia, whose second 5-furlong Royal Ascot win came in the G1 King=s Stand on Tuesday; followed by Wednesday=s last-race winner Con Te Partiro in the Listed Sandringham H. at a mile. In Thursday=s opener, Sioux Nation, trained by a certain Aidan O=Brien, became Scat Daddy=s fourth Royal Ascot 5-furlong 2-year-old Group winner, his fifth 2-year-old Group winner total, and marked the seventh win for Scat Daddy at Royal Ascot in five years. Five have been trained by Wesley Ward, two by O=Brien. In 2013, No Nay Never, from Scat Daddy=s third crop, won the Norfolk. Two years later, Acapulco won the G2 Queen Mary S. Last year Scat Daddy scored a 2-year-old double as Caravaggio won the G2 Coventry S. at six furlongs and Lady Aurelia became Scat Daddy=s second Sgt. Matt Ryba with retired Thoroughbred Crafty Star successive Queen Mary winner.
