MONDAY, APRIL 26, 2021 CADDO RIVER OUT OF DERBY 31 SHADES (& COUNTING) Shortleaf Stable's 'TDN Rising Star' Caddo River (Hard Spun) OF DERBY GRAY will not make the line-up for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby after spiking a fever over the weekend. AWe noticed he was off his feed and took his temperature yesterday afternoon. It was slightly elevated,@ trainer Brad Cox said. AIt=s just really bad timing being this close to the Derby. We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can=t run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.@ The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well. After sending his Derby quartet out to jog Sunday morning, trainer Todd Pletcher announced a Derby rider for Sainthood Giacomo | Horsephotos (Mshawish). Cont. p6 The Week in Review, by T.D. (Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016) – Paul Lichtefeld and Jack Stewart ’s Engaginglee collected her first stakes victory with a determined head victory over Miss Pink Diva in Saturday’s 33 rd running of the $100,000 Locust Grove Presented by TwinSpires.com (Grade III) for fillies and mares at Churchill Downs. Trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Luis Saez , Engaginglee covered the 1 1/16 miles on a muddy main track in 1:46.24. Odds-on 3-5 favorite Ahh Chocolate struggled over the surface and finished last. Innovative Idea led the field of six distaffers through fractions of :24.93, :49.32 and 1:13.75 with Engaginglee racing comfortably in last during the early stages of the two-turn race. On the far turn, Engaginglee began to pass rivals from the outside and drew even with Miss Pink Diva, who poked her head in front at the top of the stretch. Engaginglee kicked on well and was fully extended to narrowly prevail. “It was a great trip,” Saez said. “She was coming from behind. She broke well and we saved ground and when I asked her she responded very well. I had a little more left, she was hanging a little bit but she battled back and fought very well.” The victory was worth $61,380 to Engaginglee and increased her earnings to $313,620 with a record of 23-4-6-4.

  • Testimony of Marty Irby Executive Director Animal Wellness Action Before the U.S
Testimony of Marty Irby Executive Director Animal Wellness Action before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Commerce and Consumer Protection H.R. 1754, "The Horseracing Integrity Act" January 28, 2020 On behalf of Animal Wellness Action, one of the nation's leading animal protection organizations on Capitol Hill, I submit this testimony in support of H.R. 1754, the Horseracing Integrity Act. I express my sincere thanks to Chair Jan Schakowsky and Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers for conducting this hearing and offer special thanks to Representatives Paul Tonko, and, Andy Barr for introducing this reform effort. I also express thanks to Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone and Ranking Member Greg Walden for their participation in this process. This hearing builds on the testimony and other information gathered during the 2018 hearing conducted before the Subcommittee on H.R. 2651 in the 115th Congress. I first want to underscore that Animal Wellness Action does not oppose horseracing. We join with many horse owners, breeders, trainers, and racing enthusiasts in speaking out on the broader topic of the protection of horses within the American horseracing industry and across the greater equine world. We seek to promote the proper stewardship of horses at every stage of their lives, including during their racing careers. We are deeply concerned about on- and off- track risks to the horses, including catastrophic injuries sustained during racing. America was built on the backs of horses, and they have always played a central role in the economy and culture of the United States. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and the very least we must do is ensure their safety, welfare, and protection.
