Gold Medal Colt Gets $850,000 facebook.com/thefloridahorse FLORIDA’S DAILY SALES DIGEST • THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2017 SALE HEADLINES Published by Florida Equine Communications Inc. FTBOA.COM Gold Medal Colt Gets $850,000 By BROCK SHERIDAN The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company continued to showcase popular thoroughbreds Wednesday as their April Sale of 2-year-olds in training drew good numbers once again from eager buyers. For the day, 158 horses brought a total of $13,917,500 compared with 165 selling for a total of $12,323,500 at last year’s second session. The average price was $88,085, up 18% compared to 74,688 in 2016 while the median price was $41,000, compared with $45,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 25.1%; it was 27.6% last year. Fourteen horses sold for $250,000 or more, compared with eight at the corresponding session in 2016. Topping the sale so far is Hip 584, who was pur- chased for $850,000 by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Twin Creeks, Bri- dlewood and Robert La Penta. The bay colt is by Medaglia d’Oro out of the multiple graded-stakes winning mare Indian Vale, by A.P. Indy. He was consigned by Paul Sharp, agent and worked an eighth-mile in :10 1/5 at the Under Tack show. “We were fortunate enough to partner with Twin Creeks last year on [Kentucky Derby starter] Destin,” said Aron Wellman, President of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. “This year we have Bridlewood and Mr. [Robert] La Penta as partners [on Tapwrit] on what we hope will be another Derby horse in about 10 days. So there is a lot of synergy in the group. The way the market is right now, you see a lot of the big time players having to team up in order to get horses bought and share in some of the risk. So we hope this horse developes into a classic type individual.” “I really like his pedigree and the way he moves,” said Randy Guil- lett of Twin Creeks. “Hopefully this horse will get us where Destin got Hip No. 584 topped us last year and where Tapwrit got these guys this year. We think he is Wednesday’s session a Derby kind of horse.” at $850,000 See OBS April on page 2 JOE DIORIO PHOTO WWW.FTBOA.COM • THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2017 • 2 www.facebook.com/thefloridahorse OBS April from page 1 Joe Applebaum of Off the Hook said he was Hip No. 591 was second very pleased with the sale but said the price re- Sharp said one never knows what a horse highest for Wednesday’s flected the filly’s assets. will bring at auction, but he was very pleased session at $650,000 “She’s by Distorted Humor out of a big fe- with this colt. male family,” Applebaum said. “She has a big “You always have high expectations for a walk on her and she breezed really nice in :10. quality horse like this,” Sharp said. “We had For the high end buyer, she has a lot to offer. Robert LaPenta Born: Aug. 20, 1945, in Yonkers, New York Residence: Westport, Connecticut Family: Wife, Laurie. Son: Robert Jr. Education: Iona College Breeders’ Cup Record (includes partnerships): 10-1-1-1 | $1,750,500 • Represented by 10 Breeders’ Cup starters to date, including War Pass, who clinched an Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male with a victory in the 2007 Juvenile (G1). He also sent out Whitmore, owned in a partnership with trainer Ron Moquett and Head of Plains Partners LLC, to finish second in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) after finishing eighth the year before. Jackson Bend was third for LaPenta in the 2011 Sprint. • His 2019 candidates include Whitmore, who is making this third Sprint start, and Coal Front, who is being pointed to the Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile (G1). Coal Front, owned in a partnership with Head of Plains Partners, won the Godolphin Mile (G2) on this year’s Dubai World Cup undercard. His 2019 wins also include the Razorback Handicap (G3), the Mr. Prospector (G3) and the Parx Dirt Mile. • LaPenta, who grew up attending the races in New York with his mother, achieved one of his “bucket list” wishes in racing when he won the 2018 Travers Stakes (G1) with Catholic Boy. “I’ve been coming to Saratoga since I was 18,” LaPenta said. “This race has always been my dream. Even more than the Kentucky Derby. Some people might not understand that, but the Mid-Summer Derby has always been my dream.” • As a 3-year-old, Catholic Boy was equally formidable on turf and dirt, winning the $1.2 million Belmont Oaks (G1) and Pennine Ridge (G2) on turf prior to his win in the Travers … That versatility made Catholic Boy the first 3-year-old male to win Grade 1 stakes at 1 ¼ miles or more on both turf and dirt since Secretariat in 1973.
