After organ studies in his home town, he attended classes at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels where his orchestration and composition teacher was Paul Gilson. He also took some private lessons from Florent Schmitt. In addition to composing, he had a distinguished academic career with posts at the Royal Music Conservatory of Brussels and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and as the long-time director of the Music Academy in Etterbeek that was renamed to honor him. He composed an enormous amount of music that encompasses all genres. His orchestral output is centered on his 5 Symphonies, the unrecorded ones are as follows: No. 1 in D minor, Op. 1 (1920), No. 3, Op. 57 (1943), No. 4, Op. 142 (1969) and No. 5, Op. 148 (1970). Among his other numerous orchestral works are 3 Piano Concertos, 2 Violin Concertos, Viola Concerto. "La mort de Tintagiles" and 7 Rhapsodies. Oktober 1903 HIER GEBEURDE HET • 1 mei 2020 • Door Koen Kleijn, Hoofdredacteur Ons Amsterdam Groot nieuws in 1903: Gustav Mahler komt naar Amsterdam om zelf zijn Derde Symfonie te dirigeren in het Concertgebouw. Hij logeert thuis bij dirigent Willem Mengelberg en zijn vrouw Tilly. ‘Lieve en onbaatzuchtige mensen’, noemt hij ze. Alleen die ‘middelmatige kunst’ aan de muur… In 1902 woont Willem Mengelberg in Krefeld de première bij van de Derde Symfonie van Gustav Mahler, de ‘dirigent-directeur’ van de prestigieuze Hofopera in Wenen. Mengelberg is dan net 31 jaar oud en sinds zeven jaar chef-dirigent van het Concertgebouworkest. Hij heeft grote plannen en is geïnteresseerd in alles wat hem als dirigent naar grotere hoogten kan opstuwen – en met hem zijn orkest. “Zonder hem nog persoonlijk te kennen, woonde ik het concert bij”, schrijft hij later, “en kwam direct onder de indruk van de fascinerende macht die van hem uitging. In zijn vertolking, in zijn technische behandeling van het orkest, in zijn manier van fraseren en opbouwen, vond ik al datgene wat mij – jong dirigent – als ideaal voor ogen zweefde. En toen ik dan ook, na afloop van het concert, persoonlijk met hem kennismaakte, was ik diep door zijn muziek ontroerd: ik beloofde hem het werk zo spoedig mogelijk ook in Amsterdam te zullen doen uitvoeren.” Mengelberg organiseert direct twee uitvoeringen met zijn orkest in het volgende concertseizoen in Amsterdam, op 22 en 23 oktober 1903. Mahler zelf zal zijn Derde Symfoniekomen dirigeren. Mengelberg biedt de Weense grootmeester aan om dan bij hem thuis te komen logeren, in zijn ruime, nieuwe huis in de Van Eeghenstraat, vlak bij het Concertgebouw.
