Accepted 8 January, 2011 We report antimicrobial potential of extracts of roots of Triclisia subcordata and whole plant of Heinsia crinita used as components of various herbal portions in ethnomedine in South West Nigeria to treat acute urinogenital infections and infertility. Methanol and hexane extracts of each plant were obtained by maceration and tested for antimicrobial activity using agar diffusion and microbroth dilution techniques. The extracts were tested against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi including four species of Candida. The study showed that extracts of H. crinita and T. subcordata exhibited profound antibacterial activity against the typed and clinical isolates obtained from patients with STD and meningitis. High antifungal activity, particularly against the Candida species was noted as Candida species are implicated in candidiasis and vaginal thrush. Generally, the methanol extract was more effective than the hexane extracts on the test micro-organisms. The study justifies the ethnopharmacological uses of these medicinal plants for treatment of microbial infections. The fresh leaves of Heinsia crinita were ground and steam-distilled to get the Lynus B Ashipu essential oil. Constituents of the essential oil were separated by gas chromatography while its individual Chemistry Department, constituents were identified by mass spectrometric analysis using a GC-MS instrument. The University of Calabar, PMB antimicrobial susceptibility test of the essential oil was carried out through agar disc diffusion method 1115, Calabar, Cross River State, while the broth method was employed for determination of MIC, MBC and MFC of the essential oil Nigeria against the test pathogenic microorganisms. The isolated essential oil of Heinsia crinita leaf contains forty organic compounds which are being identified for the first time in this plant species. Some of these compounds like phytol and oleic acid are known to have biological activities. The oil inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococccus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillusnigar and Saccharomyces cereviseae. The oil has antimicrobial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria as well as fungi. Keywords: Heinsia crinita, essential oil, chemical composition, antimicrobial activity 1. -

Adewuni and Isaac Ejakpovi Functional Food and Nutraceutical Unit, Department of Biochemistry, Federal University of Technology, Akure, PMB 704, Akure 340001, Nigeria ABSTRACT Heinsia crinita; a common vegetable in the south-eastern part of Nigeria with the local name “Atama” have been used as a component of various herbal portions in ethnomedicine. The plant part has been previously used in the treatment of umbilical hernia and skin rashes. There is dearth of information on the scientific rationale behind the use of this plant. This study was designed to investigate the pharmacological potentials of aqueous extracts of Heinsia crinita for the management/prevention of hypertension. Fresh, matured green leaves of Heinsia crinita were harvested from a local farm in Cross River State, Nigeria. The total phenol, total flavonoids, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging ability and ability of the extract to chelate Fe2+ as well as inhibition of Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in rat penile homogenate arginase and angiotensin-1-converting enzyme inhibitory activity were assessed. The results revealed that the extract had high total phenol and total flavonoid content. The extract also exhibited inhibitory effect on Arginase (EC50 = 3.93 mg/mL) and angiotensin-1-converting enzyme (ACE) (EC50 = 0.77 mg/mL). -
