Summary: APTA, through its subsidiary the North American Transit Services Association (NATSA), develops standards, recommended practices and guidelines for the benefit of public rail transportation. These tasks are accomplished by working groups consisting of members from rail transit agencies, manufacturers, consultants, engineers and other interested groups. Through the development of these documents, working groups have created a wide array of terms and abbreviations, many with varying definitions. This compendium has been developed to standardize the usage of such definitions and acronyms as it relates to rail operations, maintenance practices, designs and specifications. This document is dynamic in nature in that, over time, additional definitions and acronyms will be included. It is APTA’s intention that the document be sufficiently expanded at some point in the future to provide common usage of terms encompassing all rail industry requirements. Scope and purpose: This compendium applies to all rail agencies that operate commuter rail, heavy rail (subway systems), light rail, streetcars, and trolleys. The usage of these definitions and acronyms are voluntary. AAR - Association of American Railroads. 3. ABS - see Automatic Block Signal System. 4. AB Valve - The operating device used on freight cars for charging, applying, and releasing the brakes. Also called a triple valve 5. ABD Valve - An improvement of the AB Valve that features a quick release 6. ABDW Valve - An improvement of the ABD Valve. Modifies the Emergency Portion and provides for accelerated buildup of brake cylinder pressure during quick service applications. 7. A Frame - a type of flat car designed with bulkheads on each end and a Center beam structure connected to each bulkhead to support the load so that it does not shift during movement. see Centerbeam flat 8. ACS - see Automatic Cab Signal 9. Absolute Block - A length of track that no train is permitted to enter while the track is occupied by another train. 10. Absolute Permissive Block - (APB) A designated section of track or tracks within which the movement of trains will be governed by block signals, whose indications supersede the superiority of trains. The block signals may be controlled manually or automatically. 11. Absolute Signal - A block or interlocking signal without a number plate, or designated by an “A” marker. 12. Actuate – a feature of the Independent Brake Valve to charge the Actuating pipe from the Main Reservoir, and prevent or release a locomotive brake application from a brake pipe reduction. -

Volume – 28 Number – 1 March 2021 to May 2021 Edition The B-class were the first mainline diesel locomotives built for the Victorian Railways. The design was based on the successful USA Electro-Motive Division F-unit locomotives with the distinctive bulldog nose. They were unusual in having a streamlined drivers cab at each end. Frank Shea of Clyde Engineering, Granville, NSW, had negotiated with EMD to build the new locomotive locally. The order was placed in 1951 and the first locomotive was delivered on 14 July 1952. The 26 members of the Class operated on broad gauge lines throughout Victoria, working the majority of the important passenger trains, as well as fast freights. Many timetables were accelerated, and steam locomotives began to be scrapped in large numbers. The Chief Engineers Office found that one B-class did the work of three steam locomotives.
