Richards "Les hommes naissent asiatiques. emopeens. fran~ais, anglais; Us sont cultivateurs, marchands, soldats; mais dans tout pays les femmes naissent, vivent. et meurent femme ....Ainsi les femmes n'appartiennent qu' au genre humain. Elles le rappellent sans cesse a l'humanite par leurs sentiments natw'els et meme par leurs passions" (Bernardin. Paul 58). With this illustrative statement, Bemardin de Saint-Pierre defined women's roles in society in what he perceived to be a positive framework based upon natural law as understood in late eighteenth-century France. This understanding of gender roles formed the deep structure for his most influential, idyllic romance Paul et Virginie. Quicldy hailed as a classic, the novel would become the prototype for a generation of novel writers, including Aaubert whose Emma Bovary would become poisoned by the unrealistic love expectation found in Paul et Virginie, and by the lack of personal definition for women endemic in the society and confirmed by the novel's subtext. Aaubert would even name Mme. Aubain's children Paul and Virginie as an ironic twist in his 1876 short story Un ereUT simple. For George Sand, the condition of woman as expressed by Bemardin was untenable. Indiana, her first independant novel, written under her new pen name, is a deliberate rewrite of Paul et Virginie. Not only does she compare her heroine with Virginie intratextually, Sand sets her novel on the tie Bourbon, about 400 miles east of Madagascar and southeast of l'tIe Maurice, the place occupied by Paul and Virginie. -

Though it was translated, it seemed as though the translator was trying very hard to keep it from being modernized - how do you think he did in keeping the flavor of the 19th century? 3. Did you find it difficult to read? The writing is very formal, very detailed, with long, long sentences – is that different from things you usually read? 4. In general, how were the women portrayed? Were you surprised by any of them? 5. In general, how were the men portrayed? Again, were you surprised by any of them? 6. What did you think of Horace - was Theophile’s introduction of him in the first chapter intriguing? Did you think you would like him? 7. Did he have any endearing traits? What about annoying ones? What was it about him that made some people care for him? Was he crazy? Just young? Shallow? Manipulative? Did he have any deep relationships? 8. What did you think of Theophile? What did you think of his relationship with Eugenie? Was it a satisfying one for both of them? Why do you think he stayed in the neighborhood instead of being a doctor in a richer area? 9. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016. 192 pp. $110.00 U.S. (hb). ISBN 978-0-19-873539-7. Review by Pratima Prasad, University of Massachusetts, Boston. For some time now, scholars have been questioning the received idea that George Sand was an idealist writer whose novelistic art stood in opposition to the realism of her (male) contemporaries. Manon Mathias’s exploration of vision in Sand’s novels brings a refreshing and unique perspective to this conversation. The book’s central claim is that Sand’s œuvre was aimed at “bridging the gap between physical sight and abstract vision” (p. 3). As such, Mathias throws into sharp relief the ways in which Sand’s novels disrupt the divide between realism and idealism and blur the boundaries between the two canonized modes of novelistic production in nineteenth-century France: Romanticism (which we tend to associate with introspection and abstract vision) and Realism (which emphasized physical observation and mimetic representation). Vision in the Novels of George Sand is conceptually profound in its articulation of vision and the visual; at the same time, it is lucidly written and accessible. The book also casts a wide net, relating the concept of vision to literary esthetics, social utopianism, painting, and scientific investigation. Mathias’s study moves chronologically through Sand’s corpus. Chapter one reads Sand’s early novels, such as Indiana, Valentine, and Lélia, as they engage with what may be termed as visual realism, or the practice of reproducing social reality. -

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE FRENCH LITERATURE – 19th Century Buckner B Trawick, Ph.D. PART I : Early 19th Century Literature -The Romantic Age1800-1842 OVERVIEW Historical Background.* Many exciting political events which helped determine national thought and literature took place in France in the first half of the nineteenth century. As has been mentioned, Napoleon Bonaparte was made consul in 1799 and emperor in 1804. It soon became clear that he was not merely continuing a revolution which had once aimed at freedom from tyranny and oppression, but that he was waging an aggres-sive war of conquest. His fortunes continued to rise till his unsuccessful invasion of Russia in 1812. He met disaster again at the Battle of Leipzig (1813), was exiled to Elba (1814), but escaped (March, 1815)—only to lose his final battle at Waterloo (June, 1815). He was exiled again - this time to the island of St. Helena, where he died in 1821. The Bourbons were restored to the throne in the person of Louis XVIII, who ruled from 1815 till 1824. He was succeeded by Charles X, whose despotic methods led to another revolution (July, 1830). France was proclaimed a constitutional monarchy, andLouis Philippe was called to the throne. Another revolution (1848) overthrew this monarchy, and the Second Republic was proclaimed.Louis Napoleon, a nephew of Napoleon I, served as president from 1848 till 1851. Then by a coup d‟etat he establish himself as dictator, declared France an empire again, and was crowned EmperorNapoleon III in December, 1851. The political unrest is, of course, reflected in the temper of the times.Both the failure of the French Revolution to establish and maintaina just and democratic government and the defeat of Napoleon I were inevitably followed byperiods of disillusionmentamong many groups. -

George Sand and the Lure of the Heights: Indiana and Jacques Richard B. Grant University of Texas, Austin Current scholarship on George Sand has managed to get beyond the exteriors of her biography and has reached into the complex and troubled inner world of her psyche.1 There remains, however, a general tendency among the reading public, and even among some critics of nineteenth-century French literature, that most of her novels are easy to grasp, that they are more obvious than problematic, or in Roland Barthes‟ terminology, more lisibles than scriptibles. From Indiana, which protests loudly against any oppressive marriage bond to, say, Mlle la Quintinie, with its open anti-clericalism, the general opinion continues to be that, except perhaps for Lélia and Consuelo and its sequel, most of her fiction is easily assimilated. Sand‟s supposedly obvious fictions are not all that obvious, and it has been easy for critics to miss some important insights. To illustrate, I would like to reexamine two of her earliest efforts. One, Indiana (1832), is well known; the other, Jacques (1834) is less so. I will approach these two works by focusing on a motif that has not attracted systematic attention: the flight from the corrupt lowlands and their so-called civilization up into the solitude and purity of the mountain heights. The topos is hardly new, of course. Sand naturally shared in the universal tradition, one reemphasized by the entire Romantic generation, that “up there” one finds God, the sublime, and the pure, whereas “down here” life is compromise at best and often an outright mess. -

Sobre algunas traducciones de Valentine, de George Sand M . C a r m e Fig u e r o l a , U n iv e r sit a t d e Lleida En el repertorio de traducciones elaborado por Montesinos constan tres versiones de Valentine de George Sand. Dos de ellas se publican en 1837, corren a cargo de Eugenio de Ochoa y Francisco Altés, y son editadas, respectivamente, por I. Sancha en Madrid y por Pife rrer en Barcelona. La tercera ve la luz un año después, realizada por Pedro Reynés Sola y publicada por Oliva también en la ciudad condal. De las tres nos referiremos a la última y a la de Ochoa, de la cual sabemos Que existieron reediciones, como la de 1887, publica da por la madrileña El Cosmos Editorial.1 AunQue fuera del período de nuestro análisis, nos parece significativo el hecho de Que se pro duzca una nueva edición de la novela medio siglo después. Confir maría así la fortuna considerable de George Sand en España, pese a la opinión mayormente adversa de la crítica española, a menudo, como subraya Jean-René Aymes (1997: 243-262), más centrada en su persona Que en la calidad de su obra. La suerte de la escritora francesa en la Península se inicia en 1836 con la primera traducción de Leone Leoni. El mundo editorial español apuesta por la Que en ese momento es la última novela pu blicada por Aurore Dupin, autora cuyo nombre ha ganado ya la fama en Francia, sobre todo desde Que en 1832 hicieran su apari ción Indiana y su “hermana menor” (Wingard 1987: 71), Valentine. -
