Cucurbita pepo is a species that includes many edible vegetables such as squash and courgette. It has attractive star shaped yellow flowers and usually grows in a clump low to the ground although some varieties are climbers. The fruit appears in summer and can vary wildly in appearance from long and green to large round and variegated orange and yellow in colour. This species usually has large leaves and spreads, so it needs plenty of space in the garden. The fruit can also sometimes be very large in size. It's a versatile vegetable, great for soups or stews. It will grow well in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
