Exploring the Impetus of the Silver Age: the Evolution of Discourses of Carnality and Eroticism in Pre-Revolutionary Russian Literature and in Émigré Writing CHAPTER FOUR EXPLORING THE IMPETUS OF THE SILVER AGE: THE EVOLUTION OF DISCOURSES OF CARNALITY AND EROTICISM IN PRE-REVOLUTIONARY RUSSIAN LITERATURE AND IN ÉMIGRÉ WRITING In the previous chapter I have discussed Russian erotic prose of the turn of the century in its multiple connections to what I have called, following Aleksandr Etkind, the anti-utopian counter-tradition of Russian literature. I have singled out such authors as Leonid Andreyev, Mikhail Kuzmin and Fyodor Sologub, whose groundbreaking works laid the foundation for the literary experiments of both their contemporaries and subsequent genera- tions of literati. They undoubtedly influenced both Soviet literature (which is largely beyond the scope of this monograph)1 and émigré literature. My focus in this chapter will be on such pre-revolutionary and émi- gré authors as Aleksandr Kuprin, Ivan Bunin, and Georgii Ivanov, as they, together with Vladimir Nabokov, who I will treat in the next chapter, appear to have made the most signifijicant contributions to developing the erotic and carnal discourses that emerged in the Silver Age as part of the general search for new discourses of sexuality for a modern Russian soci- ety. A common denominator for all these writers is that they engaged in a productive dialogue with Vasilii Rozanov’s revolutionary philosophy of sexualities: far from concurring with him on everything, they nonetheless were certainly inspired by and/or echoed his insights and intuitions. My skipping over the Soviet era is intentional, as I am interested in Russian traditions in the hands of Russian intellectuals. Given that it was the authors who left the country between 1917–1925 who largely created Russian literature in exile, one can safely suppose that they were more 1 I realize that I have thus sidelined a lot of fascinating literary phenomena, in which the eroticized, sexual body fijigures prominently, such as the oeuvres of Babel, Bulgakov, Platonov and Zamyatin but, as I pointed out above, early Soviet literature existed in a diffferent ideological framework and was marked by imposed censorship, and Silver Age sensitivities were in many intricate ways transformed into and/or merged with the Soviet ideology (including issues of censorship and repression) in the Soviet Russia of the 1920s and 30s. With émigré and “dissident” authors—from Ivanov and Nabokov to Mamleyev and Brodsky—this task appears much more straightforward: they did not have to adjust their creative philosophies in any way to the stifling conditions of the communist regime. 174 chapter four heavily influenced by the Silver Age, rather than by parallel developments in early Soviet literature. In fact, any of older generation exile literati to be discussed here (e.g., Aleksandr Kuprin and Ivan Bunin) actually wrote some of their best work in Russia during the Silver Age and are represen- tative of this period as much as Vyacheslav Ivanov, Aleksandr Blok, Andrei Bely or Osip Mandelshtam. Writers of a younger generation like Vladi- mir Nabokov (1899–1977) and Georgii Ivanov (1894–1958) produced their best work in emigration, but they had absorbed the intellectual achieve- ments of their numerous predecessors who were active during the three astounding decades in Russian history (1890–1920). I will argue in the next chapter that Nabokov’s Lolita (if treated as a Russian, not an American, novel; both approaches are plausible) is a crowning achievement of Russian strategies for representing carnality and eroticism in post-Silver Age writing, but its success would not have been possible without Nabokov’s precursors, whose work he knew quite well, regardless of whether he praised or berated (or both) the given authors in his numerous interviews and critical essays. The specifijic works dis- cussed in this and previous chapters that, as I will claim, may have directly impacted certain poetic and thematic aspects of Lolita as a novel about sex and eroticism include Fyodor Sologub’s The Petty Demon, Vladislav Khodasevich’s “About Pornography,” G. Ivanov’s The Decay of the Atom, Kuprin’s Sulamith, and Bunin’s short stories. Finally, the authors of later generations—Joseph Brodsky (1940–1996), Yuri Mamleyev (b. 1931), Viktor Yerofeyev (1947), Vladimir Sorokin (1955) and others who lived considerable periods of their lives in the Soviet Union—have arguably been avid readers of and active respondents to the Silver Age legacies: such a literary benchmark as Mamleyev’s best novel cccccc / Vagrants (1968, fijirst published in 1988), for instance, appears in many ways to have “leapfrogged” the Soviet tradition and inherited directly from Sologub, Bely, Kuprin and many other Silver Age authors and thinkers (in addition to Gogol, Leskov and Dostoevsky, of course). All these authors, while grappling with representations of the body and sexu- alities in their works, have contributed to the anti-utopian sub-tradition of Russian literature—to this day a most topical tendency in literature and the arts as after a brief spell of liberal democracy in the 1990s, Russia continues to be an authoritarian state, in which, for example, the uto- pian heritage of the pochvennichevo (a nationalistic philosophy of the “soil” generated by Fyodor and Mikhail Dostoevsky, Nikolai Danilevsky, Apollon Grigoriev and many others) is very much alive and thriving. I do not imply that Russian duels were more deadly than those in the West (the fatality rate in Russia never approached that in France in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries or in Germany at the end of the nineteenth century).1 I mean rather that conflicts over honor were frequently resolved in unregu lated spontaneous physical confrontations rather than in formal en- counters . Furthermore, those confrontations differed from rencontres in that they involved direct physical contact—hand-to-hand fighting or the use of weapons unrecognized by the dueling ritual, such as walking sticks or whips. The use of standard dueling weapons— swords or pistols—appears to have been optional. In other words, from the introduction of the duel in Russia to its demise, a conflict over honor was as likely (and at times more likely) to result in an im mediate and violent hand-to-hand fight as in a formal duel of honor. This happened so frequently that physical force seems to have been an accepted alternative to the duel.     On an Unhappy Marriage, Henry James, and Atoms: Vladimir Nabokov Reading (on) Anton Chekhov Ben Dhooge Nabokov’s lecture on Anton Chekhov stands out for its numerous citations from Korney Chukovsky’s 1947 article ‘Friend Chekhov.’ At the same time, however, the lecture contains many more references to other critics, as well – some of them explicit, though not necessarily clear, others more concealed. In an attempt to trace the sources Nabokov used when drafting his Chekhov lecture, the article offers a concrete view of Nabokov’s critical laboratory. Additionally, the article sheds light on his relation to other critics and critical movements, more specifically with respect to the competing ‘tendencies’ at work in the canonization of Chekhov’s oeuvre during the interwar period: Russian émigré, Soviet, and Anglo-American. Nabokov and ‘other readers’ In his Lectures on Russian Literature, Vladimir Nabokov emerges not only as a reader of literature as such – and, by extension, as a teacher of literature – but also as a reader of critical writings on literature. Nabokov frequently refers to other ‘readers’ in the broadest sense of the word, i.e. to critics (writers, literary critics, and scholars) as well as to the common reader who, unlike the former, does not take pen in hand. Sometimes Nabokov names, cites, or refers to specific ‘readers’ who commented on the writer whose work is central to the lecture in question. More often, however, Nabokov refers to reactions and opinions of ‘readers’ without specifying whom they exactly belong to. He lumps individual ‘readers’ together, giving them collective names such as ‘Russian readers and critics,’ ‘socially-minded Russian critics,’ or ‘Freudian-minded explorers.’ More importantly, the different opinions of other ‘readers’ which Nabokov includes in his lectures are meaningful elements in the structure of his argumentation.

This has led some of the few scholars who have examined this topic to claim that, in the period from Stalin through to the Gorbachev era, the issue of homosexuality was surrounded by silence. Such is the received view and in this thesis, I set out to challenge it. My investigation of a range of archival sources, including reports from the Soviet Interior Ministry (MVD), as well as juridical, medical and sex education literature, demonstrates that although homosexuality was not widely discussed in the broader public sphere, there was still lively discussion of it in these specialist and in some cases classified texts, from 1956 onwards. The participants of these discussions sought to define homosexuality, explain it, and establish their own methods of eradicating it. In important ways, this handling of the issue of homosexuality was specific to the Soviet context. This thesis sets out to broaden our understanding of the history of official discourses on homosexuality in the late Soviet period. This history is also examined in the context of and in comparison to developments on this front in the West, on the one hand, and Eastern Europe, on the other. The thesis draws on the observation made by Dan Healey, the pioneering scholar of Russian and Soviet sexuality, that in the Soviet Union after Stalin’s death a combination of science and police methods was used to strengthen heterosexual norms in the Soviet society.

    Writing A New Self and Creating a Sense for Emotional Belonging: The Case of Nadezhda Teffi, a Russian Writer in Interwar Paris Natalia Starostina, Young Harris College When considering the great upheavals of twentieth-century European history, the experience of Russian émigrés in interwar France may strike the historian as a dramatic, sudden, and deep change in luck.1 Many Russian émigrés who ended up on the shores of the Seine after 1917 were the members of the Russian intellectual and political elites who had enjoyed the life of prestige, wealth, refined social and cultural opportunities in tsarist Russia.     Alexei Lalo Precursors of Lolita: The Adolescent and his/her Sexualized Body in Russian Erotic Writing of the Silver Age and in Emigration Louis Malle’s 1978 flm Prety Baby, starring Brooke Shields, Keith Carradine and Susan Sarandon, set in a New Orleans bro­ thel in 1917 during the last few months of legal prostitution, tells a love story of Violet, a 13­year­old budding prostitute, and Bel­ locq, a young photographer, perhaps in his early thirties. When the flm came out, it caused a scandal in the US mainly due to Brooke Shields’ (who was 12 at the time) full nudity, but also be­ cause of its lurid main theme: adolescent sexuality and a sexual re­ lationship between a pubescent girl and an adult man. The shock value of the flm was enhanced by the French director’s noticeable “estrangement” in his manner of presenting the events, without really condemning such horrifying societal sores as child prostitu­ tion and sex with minors. Vroon, Co-Chair Professor Roman Koropeckyj, Co-Chair Russian artists of the early twentieth century focused not merely on the production of their own artistic works but also on the aestheticization of life itself. This phenomenon, known as ii zhiznetvorchestvo (life-creation), was often expressed in the form of dandyism. Modernists clothed themselves in unconventional fashion and exhibited eccentric behavior in order to express their opposition to what they considered as the anti-aestheticism of quotidian life. Of the various instances of Russian modernist dandyism, this dissertation examines three distinctive manifestations of decadent self-creation. The primary material for analysis my discussion includes biographies, critical essays, and literary works that address the decadent aesthetic and its practice in life. First, I explore the literary group comprised of Valerii Briusov, Konstantin Bal’mont, and Aleksandr Dobroliubov by focusing on their demonic aestheticism.
