Choral Synagogues in the Russian Empire Vladimir Levin The Center for Jewish Art, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 9190501, Israel; vlalevin@gmail.com Received: 5 May 2020; Accepted: 15 June 2020; Published: 23 June 2020 Abstract: Many scholars view the choral synagogues in the Russian Empire as Reform synagogues, influenced by the German Reform movement. This article analyzes the features characteristic of Reform synagogues in central and Western Europe, and demonstrates that only a small number of these features were implemented in the choral synagogues of Russia. The article describes the history, architecture, and reception of choral synagogues in different geographical areas of the Russian Empire, from the first maskilic synagogues of the 1820s–1840s to the revolution of 1917. The majority of changes, this article argues, introduced in choral synagogues were of an aesthetic nature. The changes concerned decorum, not the religious meaning or essence of the prayer service. The initial wave of choral synagogues were established by maskilim, and modernized Jews became a catalyst for the adoption of the choral rite by other groups. Eventually, the choral synagogue became the “sectorial” synagogue of the modernized elite. It did not have special religious significance, but it did offer social prestige and architectural prominence.     Beyond Tolerance and Persecution: Reassessing Our Approach to Medieval Convivencia Jonathan Ray n 1992, the quincentennial marking the expulsion of the Jews from Spain brought with it a flurry of studies on medieval Jewish, or I Sephardic, civilization. In the succeeding dozen years, Spain has become an increasingly “hot” subject for medievalists and Judaicists alike, and new courses on the diverse cultural legacy of the Iberian Peninsula have continued to appear at colleges and universities throughout the Europe, Israel, and North America.1 The proliferation of such curricula has been aided by the publication of sourcebooks and readers that have enabled even nonspecialists to offer courses on medi- eval Iberia that highlight the important contributions of Muslims, Jews, and Conversos to the broader history of the medieval Iberian world.2 The historiographic motif that runs throughout this new interest in me- dieval Spain is the subject of convivencia, or coexistence—a term that has been used to describe the tripartite society of medieval Iberia ever since it was introduced by the great Spanish philologist and historian Américo Castro in the 1940s.3 In recent years, this term has been embraced and distorted by an ever-widening group of academics, journalists, and poli- ticians, a phenomenon that increasingly challenges historians of medi- eval Spain to return convivencia to its original context.     Jews in Wartime Urban Space: Ethnic Mobilization and the Formation of a New Community in Kyiv, 1914-1918 by Larysa Bilous A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta © Larysa Bilous, 2018 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a case study of wartime Jewish politics and social life Jewish life in Kyiv from 1914 to the end of 1918. The research engages the larger questions of Central and Eastern European history during the Great War in general, and of the Russian Empire in particular—mass mobilization, social engineering, and the emergence of new social and political communities. Kyiv, the capital of the South-Western region of the Russian Empire, was situated in the center of the Pale of Jewish Settlement. During the war, Kyiv was the closest major city to the South-Western front and as such became the transit city for Jews deported for resettlement. Philanthropic activity, developed to aid the Jewish refugees, – the Jewish “home front” – mobilized the Jewish population and significantly democratized communal life. I argue that relief work during the war created a new and officially- sanctioned Jewish public space that enabled the development of a Jewish civil society and established an imagined national community. The wartime turmoil, growing state anti-Semitism, and the activity of Jewish relief organizations all stimulated political activity and furthered the development of a civic collective identity, which enabled an impressive Jewish national movement from 1917–1920. The revolutionary events of 1917 changed Kyiv’s identity and its status in the region.

PETERSBURG-LENINGRAD1 Michael Beizer The paper is a pre-research of a little discussed topic. It was triggered by the author’s studying of the Petrograd-Leningrad Jewish community.2 Calls for reform of the Jewish religion were heard in Russia since the middle of the 19th century.3 It started in Odessa, where the Jewish community was well advanced along the path of modernization.4 In 1840 a group of well-to-do merchants from Galicia established the modern Brodsky Choral synagogue in Odessa. The service and the atmosphere there were more orderly and formal, more aesthetic, than in a traditional synagogue. In 1860 the community appointed Rabbi Dr. Simon Schwabacher from Wurttenberg. Rabbi Schwabacher introduced the celebration of weddings within the community synagogue, rather than in the traditional outdoor manner. He started confirmations for girls and gave western-style sermons in German. The synagogue had an excellent choir. Men and women sang in it together. The community also bought an organ to play on Sabbaths and holidays.
