Tweet These wise words from Afghan-American journalist Matiullah Abid Noor have helped me understand Afghanistan cricket much better than all the time I have spent interviewing cricketers and administrators. History and geography are inseparable in conflict zones, but what Abid Noor means to say is: inquiries into geography are not likely to lead you far; history will tell you much more. This is the story of Rashid Khan, the world's best T20 bowler, third best in one-day internationals, and in all likelihood the most recognisable Afghan in the world. But it is also a story of Afghanistan cricket, of Afghanistan the country, of the Pashtun region either side of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, of a timely rise in T20 leagues outside international cricket, of war and displacement, and of joy and hope. Cricket in Afghanistan was officially registered in 1995, and it gained momentum only in the mid-2000s. Their fast bowlers and their expressive cricket captured the imagination of the world, but despite rapid strides and elevation to Test cricket, they are still far from being a consistent threat to the best teams in the world.

  • Cricket in Afghanistan; Perspective 10.5005/Jp-Journals-10028-1181Of a Surgeon and a Sports Enthusiast Letter to the Editor
JJPMERPMER Cricket in Afghanistan; Perspective 10.5005/jp-journals-10028-1181of A Surgeon and A Sports Enthusiast LETTER TO THE EDITOR Cricket in Afghanistan: Perspective of a Surgeon and a Sports Enthusiast Emal Wardak The growth of cricket in Afghanistan is a remarkable story. The country has moved from virtually no involvement in the game to a good level of international success in only 10 years. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has described Afghanistan as the rising star of Asian cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has said: Afghanistan can now rightly consider itself as one of the leading Associate nations. The game, now the fastest growing sport in the country, has captured the hearts and minds of a huge percentage of the population. Interest and participa- tion continue to have a spiraling growth as the National Team adds success to success. These successes have also captured the imaginations of the international cricketing world and the world media. The battle of the young players with little or no support and infrastructure, often against almost insurmountable odds, is a story being told and retold again and again. The majority of the actors in this fascinating story are young Afghans from poor families who grew up in refugee camps or small villages. Some had rarely been outside their villages until they began playing cricket. The one common factor among them all was their passion for cricket and their dream of playing the game at the international level. Comparing our cricket team with international teams in terms of resources and funds shows that they are among the poorest in the region; despite all the struggles and hurdles they are so passionate that nothing can stop them.
