Since 1993, Seeds of Peace has set the standard in international peace- building by providing exceptional young people and educators from regions of conflict with an otherwise impossible opportunity to meet their historic enemies face-to-face at our International Camp in Maine. This issue focuses on what our peers in South Asia haveI been doing. Seeds from Mumbai, Lahore and Kabul are among our most active members and are constantly seeking to break down barriers within and between their societies. Seeds of Peace is about to enter its 20th year. Since 1993, when a few dozen young boys from the Middle East attended Camp, this organization has grown to include hundreds and then thousands of young people from around the world.     When Souls and Stones meet in Old Akko The International Conservation Center Shelley-Anne Peleg Israel Antiquities Authority Rockefeller Museum P.O.B 586 Jerusalem [email protected] Abstract: As a World Heritage Site, Akko is a veritable live laboratory for studying and practicing conservation of historic sites and monuments. As an ancient city, once a major crossroad of Mediterranean civilizations, it has a rich and long heritage of oral traditions, social practices, rituals and festive events, as well as traditional crafts, art, music and culture. These aspects have barely been accounted for during development programs of the city. Local and international projects of the newly established International Conservation Center aim at enriching the character of the city by: *Enhancing the knowledge of the inhabitants of Akko about their city. *Safeguarding the intangible culture of the city by collecting, researching and reviving local traditions *Training conservation professionals at the sites of the city *Serving as a resource for all cultural and historic aspects of the city. The Old city of Akko was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001 (World Heritage List 2001). It is a port city with walls, castles, fortifications, churches, mosques and other buildings that tell the story of many glorifiers. The 4,000 years of continuous settlement within the city, has created in it a unique feature of modern inhabitants residing within historical buildings. It is a city with a rare mix of east and west, of authentic sites alongside the remnants of various cultures. The colorful oriental bazaars of Akko, the city walls, the fisherman’s wharf and restaurants are all part of the special attractions of the city.

    Intellectuals and the Maoists Uddipan Mukherjee∗ A revolution, insurgency or for that matter, even a rebellion rests on a pedestal of ideology. The ‘ideology’ could be a contested one – either from the so-called leftist or the rightist perspective. As ideology is of paramount importance, so are ‘intellectuals’. This paper delves into the concept of ‘intellectuals’. Thereafter, the role of the intellectuals in India’s Maoist insurgency is brought out. The issue turns out to be extremely topical considering the current discourse of ‘urban Naxals/ Maoists’. A few questions that need to be addressed in the discourse on who the Maoist intellectuals are: * Dr. Uddipan Mukherjee is a Civil Service officer and presently Joint Director at Ordnance Factory Board, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. He earned his PhD from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Department of Atomic Energy. He was part of a national Task Force on Left Wing Extremism set up by the think tank VIF. A television commentator on Maoist insurgency, he has published widely in national and international journals/think-tanks/books on counterinsurgency, physics, history and foreign policy. The region which extends from the frontiers of Egypt to the Atlantic Ocean, and from the Mediterranean to the Niger, was in ancient times inhabited by a people to whom we give the general name of Berbers, but whom the ancients, particularly those of the Eastern portion, knew under the name of Moors. “They were called Maurisi by the Greeks,” said Strabo, “in the first century A.D., and Mauri by the Romans. They are of Lybian origin, and form a powerful and rich nation.”[1] This name of Moors is applied not only to the descendants of the ancient Lybians and Numidians, who live in the nomad state or in settled abodes, but also to the descendants of the Arabs who, in the eighth century A.D., brought with them Islamism, imposed by the sabre of Ogbah and his successors. Even further was it carried, into Spain, when Berbers and Arabs, reunited under the standard of Moussa and Tarik, added this country to the empire of the Khalifa. In the fifteenth century the Portuguese, in their turn, took the name to the Orient, and gave the name of Moors to the Mussulmans whom they found on the Oriental coast of Africa and in India.
