 2000 to date, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education, Africa University. Lecturing in Education Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, Methods of Teaching Business Subjects, Methods of Teaching Geography; Methods of Teaching History, Theories of Psychology, Psychology of Religion and Supervising students on Teaching Practice and also supervising students’ Research Projects.

 2002 to January 2008 coordinator of the Africa University-based Kellogg-sponsored Education Leadership Management and Development Programme (ELMD) which was a teacher and educational manager-improvement programme.

1. 1987-1994 trained teachers, heads of schools, Education Officers and Ministry of Education officials on Guidance and Counselling in schools (as the sole Education Officer in Guidance and Counselling in Zimbabwe at that time).

2. 1992 initiated and ran country-wide workshops for teachers in implementing and monitoring Guidance and Counselling programmes in schools. This effort was supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Assisted Professor William Schulz in producing training material for these workshops.

3. Periodically evaluated the Guidance and Counselling Programmes in high schools throughout Zimbabwe.

4. 1993 initiated another series of trainings in the form of a Train the Trainer Programme for prospective trainers of teachers for Guidance and Counselling country wide.

5. 1992 -1994 worked with Mary Basset and Judith Sherman on a very successful Youth-against-AIDS Programme in Mashonaland East Region of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture. Beginning with a small core of schools, the Programme was extended gradually to cover over thirty high schools in the Region.

6. 1994 – 1999 trained all the tutors and Regional Coordinators of the Zimbabwe Open University in basic counselling skills. Example attached: Guidance and Counselling in Distance Education at the Quality Assurance Workshop at Brondesbury Hotel 17 – 19 October, 1997.

7. From 1995-2000 was associate trainer with the world-renowned consulting company, Price Waterhouse Coopers and in that capacity helped to produce material and train managers on a Business/Manager Development Programme in the following organisations:

a. Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) (Regional managers for the facility) in Organisation Development.

b. Training for staff in CAMPFIRE (Wild Life Association in Zimbabwe) In Project Planning and Management.

c. CHEMPLEX (consortium of fertilizer and chemical manufacturing companies in Zimbabwe) in Organisation Development. Sample of materials that were used is attached with these documents.

d. Each of the trainings was at least three days long.

8. May 1997 participated in a workshop at Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration and Management (ZIPAM) to produce gender-training materials and contributed a chapter in the Training Manual on counselling women. Both the Training Manual and the Chapter that was contributed have been submitted with the documents accompanying this application.

9. 1999 – Counselling and workshop support for Distance Education students. Example attached: Comments from an Elder Brother at the Orientation Programme for Master of Education students at University of Zimbabwe on 30 – 31 January, 1999.

10. Periodically evaluated counselling activities of staff in the Zimbabwe Open University.

11. 1999 – Workshops to prime prospective entrants to the Zimbabwe Open University BSc. In Counselling entitled: Basic Counselling Skills Workshops run throughout the country for Zimbabwe Open University. Attached is a programme of activities at the Manicaland Regional workshop that ran from 30 August to 2 September, 1999. At that time I was Deputy Director for Student Services in the Zimbabwe Open University and counselling as a discipline and as a support service to students was in my department. 7

12. 26 May 2003 presented by invitation to middle and high school students on Life and Study Skills at Watershed College (an elite school) in . Produced a 30-page document for the purpose. The document entitled ‘Presentation on Life and Study Skills – at Watershed College’, by John Mapfumo, Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Africa University and dated 26 May 2003 is attached to these application materials.

13. 2005 Made an address on ‘Attributes of a successful student’ at Saint Killian High School at the Open and Prize Giving Day of 2005.

14. 2005 and 2006 ran workshops on ‘Leadership for Prefects’ at Marange High School.

15. 2006 Contributed on the topic ‘The practice of leadership among the youth’ at a workshop organised by Youth Alive (an organisation concerned with HIV Prevention and Life Skills among the Youth in Mutare).

16. 2005 Evaluated the impact of the TEEN HIV AIDS Project of the City Health Department of the City of Mutare.

17. 2006 carried out an impact assessment study for the Youth Alive Programme on Life Skills.

18. 2006 drew up and ran a ‘Basic Counselling Skills’ workshop for staff at Simukai, an organisation for the rehabilitation of street children in Mutare. The Programme of training followed at this meeting as well as the detailed presentation scheme are attached with the rest of the materials here.

19. 2006 organised and ran a workshop for facilitators of the Teen HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme for Mutare City Council.

20. 12 April 2008 presented on a topic, ‘The research process’ at the meeting of the Association of Counselling Therapists in Mutare.

21. August 2008 presented on a topic ‘Diversity and integration in multicultural campuses’ at the Training of Sub-wardens at Africa University.

22. September, 2008 presentation on the Introductory Section to the Research Project to staff and students in the Faculty of Education.

3. 2004 Presentation on essay-writing skills for undergraduate and graduate students. Presentation for tutors and participants on the Educational Leadership Management, and Development Programme at Fort Hare University; Eastern Cape: South Africa. Participated in the formative evaluation of the Educational Leadership Management and Development Programme.

4. 2008, 8 – 13 March. Assessment of the Zimbabwe Education System in the first decade of Independence 1980-1990 (Government Policy and how it was financed and what has changed now). Paper presented at the 2nd Annual Conference in Southern Africa under the auspices of the Equilibrium International under the theme, ‘Learning and training institutions in the 21st Century’, at Fourways Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Consultancies and community service.

1. 1999 -2002 was Board Member of the Eastern Region Education and Training Trust (ERETT) which was a charitable organisation assisting AIDS orphans, training care givers of the orphans as well as training counsellors for a wide variety of situations.

2. 2001 registered a Trust --- The Child Guidance and Counselling Foundation Trust (commonly called the Counselling Foundation) which offers counselling to children irrespective of whether they are disadvantaged or not and which offers training to all people who in their various capacities are caregivers to children. The Trust has reached out to such diverse groups of people as those dealing with street children and those who look after children in mainstream schools as well as parents on School Development Committees.

3. 2001 was appointed advisory committee member for the Better Schools Programme in the Manicaland Region of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture which had

its focus as the servicing of the teachers and heads of schools in the management of schools for excellence in educational delivery.

4. 2002 to date Member of the Africa University HIV/AIDS Committee.

5. 2002 to date Chairperson of the Africa University Sports Committee.

6. 2002 Commendation for being the best staff member in offering Community Service at Africa University’s 10th Anniversary.

8. 2003 Trained Youth on Mutare City Council’s Teen HIV Prevention Programme on Guidance and Counselling skills.

9. 2007 (February/March) setting up Guidance and Counselling Programmes for traumatised and other war-affected children in the Pader District of Northern Uganda. This work was supported by Africa University and funded by the United Movement for the Ending of Child Soldiering in Northern Uganda. Worked very closely with the education leaders at Lira Palwo Secondary School to set up the counseling programme there which was expected to be the beginning of a much bigger effort in schools and communities in Northern Uganda.

10. 2007/2008 participated on the Africa Youth Programming Project (AYPP) with special contribution on Second-Chances education for Youth that have dropped out of school or failed to accomplish their ambitions at first attempt.

11. 2006 to date consultant to the Pacific Institute of Research and Evaluation Project on girl-orphan support running under the title, ‘Can Church schools reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS infection among orphan girls in Zimbabwe?’ This study involves over 300 orphan girls.

12. 2008 participated in the UNDP-funded impact evaluation of the training effectiveness of Public Service Training Institutes in Zimbabwe.

13. 2008/2009 consulting with the WKKellogg Foundation to carry out a counselling needs assessment survey in Mutasa District.

14. 2008/2009 Consulting for and giving advice to SNV (a Dutch Development Organisation) on the local capacity building for School Development Committees in schools in Buhera and Mutasa Districts.
