UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS

This has been a successful term; we have had about 35 university representatives visit our school from the USA, UK, Australia, South Africa, Netherlands, Mauritius and Malaysia. Our main focus for the first term has been to help students build a list of univer- sities they are keen on applying to. To assist them we have registered all our Senior students to register with Concourse global, which is a site that allows students create their profiles and generate a list of best fit universities they can apply to anywhere in the world. Over the holidays, our A Level students hoping to apply to the USA are encouraged to prepare for SAT Tests. They are also encouraged to register with Education USA during the April Holiday. It may also be useful to take your child for psychometric test- ing to help them discover which career path they may want to peruse. Students hoping to apply to South Africa should start work- ing on their applications during the Easter Holiday. Our focus for Second term will be mostly on assisting Upper 6 students with their applications and we strongly encourage that parents and guardians support their students with this application process. Our Careers Team is available to discuss options available for your child and you are advised to schedule a meeting with the school counsellors to map the best way forward for your child.

CAREER FAIR 2019

Gateway High School will be having a Careers Fair on the 20 June from 9.30am to 1.00pm. Our focus is to help students identify available local and international career options as well as assist students who have no interest in going to university in finding suita- ble careers. We will have exhibitors from various organisations, showcasing trade training opportunities in the different sectors. Our Career Fair has grown to be one of the largest school organised Fairs in the country, with over 80 exhibitors and hundreds of students attending. Our theme for this year is “Welcome to Zimbabwe “and we are hoping to promote local career opportunities for students. I am also pleased to inform you that we are having a series of workshops prior to the fair (17-19 June) the aim of the workshops is to give parents and students information on career opportunities. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to attend our workshops and the career fair.

We would also like to invite Gateway parents and guardians to showcase any of their businesses which can be of interest to chil- dren in terms of career choice. The Fair is also an excellent platform for marketing your products.. Ten tables will be availed to parents and guardians free of charge. Please get in touch with us as soon as possible in order to book a table. Please contact the careers team for bookings: [email protected]. By Mr Chris Nyathi

Remember your Creator in the days of your youth , Ecclesiastes 12:1 2019, Issue 2 Equipping students to reach their full potential Page 5 CYCLONE IDAI A tropical cyclone is defined as „a storm system characterised by a large low pressure centre and nu- merous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain‟, usually producing great devastation and loss of life.

Cyclone Idai made landfall during the night of 14 to 15 March 2019 near Beira in central Mozambique. It brought with it torrential rains and winds to various regions in Mozambique before crossing over into the Eastern part of Zimbabwe. The subsequent heavy downpour of rains and fierce winds resulted in unprecedented flash floods, leading to a massive loss of life and the destruction of property, particularly in Chimanimani. The current death toll stands at 344, with many more injured and thousands displaced. On Sunday 17 March 2019, messages began to circulate on social media throughout the whole Gateway Community requesting for donations for the people in Chimanimani. Over the next couple of days, stu- dents and teachers alike responded in a manner that was heart-warming to see. Without a doubt, the plight of the villagers out in Chimanimani and Chipinge touched the hearts of many, and without hesita- tion the donations began to flow in. On the 19th of March, I spent the day, with the help of Lower 6 and Upper 6 students during their free periods, as well as the gap years, sorting through the mountain of goods.

It seemed an insurmountable task as we made separate piles of babies, boys, girls, women and men‟s clothing, as well as jackets, shoes and blankets. In another room, a number of girls sorted through gro- cery supplies, pots, plates and cutlery, before we packed and labelled everything to ensure ease of refer- ence at the drop off point. The collection and delivery of the goods was delayed because the truck deliv- ering stuff from Gateway Primary School had to make a second trip, as a result of the generosity shown by the junior school family. When it came time to pack the many bags, boxes, sacks and bin liners the high school had contributed, Mr McKop and his team came to assist, to carry and load the truck. The following day, Mrs Taderera came pushing a large trolley piled to overflowing with contributions from the kitchen staff. Together they had put together pots, plates, cooking utensils, as well as sanitary pads to be added to the vast array of items. I was reminded of 1 Chronicles 29.5b, 9

And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD? 9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD.

Truly it was thrilling to see hearts and hands opening without coercion to meet the needs of others. In our attempt to continue to assist with the relief efforts of Cyclone Idai, the Gateway Community (GHS, GPS,GCTC) has decided to come together in order to provide continued assistance. Our desire is to hopefully impact the affected community beyond their immediate day to day needs. Dzingire Prima- ry School has been identified to receive this extended support. Dzingire is a council school in Chi- manimani which suffered the loss of 50 students and 4 teachers, including the Headmaster. Mrs Chipo Gwasira, a member of staff at Gateway Primary School comes from the area. The school has 785 stu- dents who are in dire need of support ranging from stationary supplies to school fees. A trip will be made out there end of April to assess the exact needs on the ground, so we know how to assist. We will be coming back to you with feedback in the coming days and weeks.

May God enable us to dig deep and like the believers in Acts share from what God has blessed us with , in order to , in whatever small way, alleviate the pain and suffering of our brothers and sisters. Ms Nellie Nyeke

SOUTH AFRICA NETBALL TOUR IN PHOTOS

Our netball girls travelled to South Africa to take part in a Netball Camp presented by TuksNetball at Camps Discovery which is a Leadership, Sport and Adventure Academy. The girls took part in many of the team building activities and the in- tensive training programming which was facilitated by Jenny van Dyk the TuksNetball Head Coach. It was an honour for our girls to sit under the feet of one who has been tasked to work with the Zimbabwe National Netball Team in preparation for their World Cup appearance sometime this year. Matches were played on Saturday afternoon and our girl‟s team (comprising of 4 juniors and 6 seniors) played their hearts out winning one game and losing 3, 2 of them narrowly. We thank God and our parents for affording our daughters such an opportunity to take part in such a prestigious event. We pray that we contin- ue to afford our girls such exposure, taking note that South Africa is the Netball Power House in Africa.
