    List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The host organizations, the Akhal-Teke Association of America and the Equus Survival Trust, focus on conservation through education. Horse Expo has always made a concerted effort to educate its attendees, whether through veterinary science, breeding, alternative modalities, training, camping or riding. To have SANA and the host groups parallel the Expo’s mission statement of education, plus showcase these horses in sanctioned classes at the Expo, is an exceptional opportunity. Where else can you visit with and watch these rare and endangered horses perform? And of course the exhibitors and breeders will gladly tell you about the unique characteristics of each breed including the traditional type, movement and temperament that these horses have displayed for centuries. This year the Horse Expo will be housed at Murieta Equestrian Center, the largest equestrian center in California. The Akhal-Teke horse is believed to be one of the oldest surviving and purest of horse breeds. The Akhal-Teke is a descendant of the ancient Turkmene horse that originated from Asia and was used by nomadic tribes as a war horse. Later the Turkmene horse was brought to Russia and the best breeding stock were taken to the first Akhal-Teke Stud, Zakaspiisky, near Ashkhabad where the breed was developed and used by the Russian Military.

    2012 KENTUCKY EQUINE SURVEY Trigg County Fact Sheet This data comes from the 2012 Kentucky Equine Survey conducted by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), with support and assistance by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Kentucky Horse Council. It is estimated that there are 1,200 horses in Trigg County, residing on 200 equine operations. The total value of Trigg County’s equine and equine-related assets was $4.97 million. Full details of the report may be found online at equine.ca.uky.edu/kyequinesurvey . For the purposes of this study, an “equine operation” is de" ned as an address on which at least one horse, pony, donkey or mule resides. From this study, it was determined that an equine operation encompasses the large breeding farms, property on which equines are kept for personal use and other land with a primary use that may not be equine-related, such as a cattle operation or crop farm. It is estimated that there are a total of 35,000 equine operations throughout Kentucky. These equine operations accounted for a total of 4.3 million acres of land, of which 1.1 million acres were devoted to equine-related activities.
