The purpose of this newsletter is to provide information to showers who do not have internet access. It is mailed free of charge (courtesy of Marie Phillips). The newsletter is also available by email and on the website as a secondary source of information and updates for all members. Contact Marie to sign up! [email protected] NEWS In Short (From the Editor) – I hope you are having a great summer. While our top horses are off competing for big prizes at the championship show, we have been choosing our “Horse(s) of the Year” and competing our “other animals” at the fun show. And now it is time to select our board of directors for next season. We have miraculously found some new talent to fill all our board positions, and as usual, all nominees are running unopposed. Our soviet-style “election” is July 30. See the list of nominees in this newsletter. For those of you attending your first MEPSA championship show, you may be wondering when you can expect to see the results. The judging will probably be complete by August. Then the results book will go to print. And finally, Elena will box up all the photos and prizes and ship them back to you. The board of directors works hard to bring this moment to you! I think you will be very pleased. Holy Cow it’s time to start prepping photos for the first shows of next season. As you go through your photos – please pull any that have digital editing, such as a clone tool used to remove elements/ smooth foreground/background transition, remove model stands or that sort of thing. It has been noticed by the judges that some photos appear to have been retouched in this way. That is absolutely forbidden for photos being shown in MEPSA. Go back to your original untouched images and reprint or take some new photos over the summer. We will be sending out warnings if we continue to get reports from our judges re photos that appear to be altered. We don’t want to disqualify any of your beautiful models. ☺ When labeling photos, make sure that your labels are legible and in a font plain and large enough for elderly/visually impaired judges (cause there are a lot of us!). Volunteering to judge is a huge commitment and we do not want our judges lives to be miserable. Contest News The mini custom contest was a huge success with many wonderful entries. A big thank you to the artists who contributed their work. These entries will be champ show prizes. Shana Bobbitt won the contest with her customized Breyer TWH. The prize was this u/f AR from Horsing Around, Marcimello, a darling miniature donkey! June 15- Thanks to Shana Bobbitt, our NEW donations coordinator, who was trying the position on for size by helping with the final contests of the 17-18 season, we got some wonderful entries for the tack contest. The winner will receive their choice of a C.O.W.S. u/f cow resin. It’s not too late to vote! The poll for selecting the winning tack maker will be available soon through the web page: select the “B” icon in the upper right on the webpage. NEW CONTESTS FOR NEXT SEASON: January 15, 2019 – Writing contest. When you read this year’s champ show book, get inspired! Prize TBD. February 15, 2019 – The Lady Phase Makeover contest! Remake her any way you like and donate her to MEPSA. Prize TBD. BOD news – Elections! 2018/19 MEPSA Board of Directors Here is the line up for this year’s offices: President Elizabeth Jones Vice President Stephanie Michels Treasurer Carolyn Bailey Secretary Carissa Kirksey Web Master Jennifer Cole Donation Coordinator Shana Bobbitt Judge Coordinator Alyssa Bailey Novice Coordinator Marie Phillips Champ Show Coordinator Elena Lemm Champ Book Coordinator Kristen Williams Board Member at large Laurel Dedes Kristen Williams is a professional graphic designer at her full-time job and she designed the national program books for last year's Arabian Horse Association national shows and helped with the AHA's member magazine, so she is no stranger to putting together publications. She has been been working in graphic design since 2014. See samples of her work on the last page of the newsletter! I think we can look forward to an exciting Champ show book next year! As a hobbyist, Kristen has been collecting and customizing since 2001. She creates stablemate customs under the name Blue Mountain Stable and have shown them successfully in MEPSA and NAMHSA Region 3 shows (see her website, bluemountainstable.com). She is also involved in pedigree assignment, IPABRA and the North American Model Arabian Horse Association. Shana Bobbitt jumped in to assist with donor contests and has already shown herself to be indispensible. The “election” is July 30. All nominees are running uncontested, so there will be no poll. If you do have a comment about any of these nominees, please email Carissa Kirksey, electoral secretary. The good news though is we were able to fill all offices with very high quality people! We can look forward to another successful MEPSA season. Tweaks to the classlist for the 2018/19 season Now that we have completed the Qualifier shows for the 2017/2018 season, it is time to look forward to the 2018/2019 season. I know that it took some time to get use to the new class list. Sometime ago, I asked the group how you felt about the list and if you wanted to see any possible changes. The consensus was that the majority of the class list is working, as is. However, we have decided to make a few changes. It should require a minimum of re- numbering. I made the following changes in the Other Breed Division: • Class 41 Feral/Semi-Feral Horse. The class is now only for horses. All Ponies have been moved to their respective classes in the Pony division. Mustangs still go here. (all except the domesticated Spanish Mustang breed). • Class 42 Light Carriage. This class is mostly heavy Warmblood type horses that are generally used with lighter carts/carriages. Check the new Breed Directory to see which breeds go here. • Class 43. Heavy Carriage. This is for the remaining harness breeds. This would be the draft type for wagons and such. Again, check the Breed Directory. • The Small Horse class was discontinued and the breeds moved to the Other Pure class (not just for Lipizzaners anymore!) Because of these changes, the Div. A gender descriptions have been modified as follows: *Light Type: Arabian, Morgan, light type mixes and light mules, etc. *Sport/Light Carriage Type: Thoroughbred, Warmblood, Gelderlander, Cleveland Bay, sport/carriage type mixes, and sport/carriage mules, etc. *Spanish/Gaited Type: Andalusian, Pasos, American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walker, Spanish/gaited type mixes, and Spanish/gaited mules, etc. *Stock Type: Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Paint, stock type mixes, and stock mules, etc. *Draft/Heavy Carriage Type: Belgian, Clydesdale, Shire, Gypsy Vanner, Irish Cob, draft/carriage type mixes and draft/carriage mules, etc. *Pony Type: Shetland, Welsh, Fjord, Miniature horses, pony type mixes and pony mules, etc. We have added a Headstudy class to the Halter class list in all divisions. It is still class 134 (no renumbering), but it will give Halter only showers a chance to show their Headstudys without entering the Performance shows. We also have removed the Headstudy classes from contention for any Championships. In Division B, we added Bainbridge to class 74. Ceramics-Royal Worcester, Animal Artistry, Pour Horse, Bainbridge, and Horsing Around In Performance, we have added the ability to show multiple entries in the Hunter Arena/Field, Pleasure/Fine Harness, and Other Harness classes. Two entries will be allowed per class, AS LONG AS THEY ARE OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES. AND the discipline must be listed by the shower AND the judge. I have updated the dates in the Breyer Collectability division. Current as of 2018. Recent Discontinued 2002-2017 and Vintage Discontinued 2001 and before. This is where the most renumbering might take place, but that is normal every year as models are discontinued. There were a few complaints, last year, from the judges about photos that did not have the correct class numbers. This is the perfect opportunity to check ALL of your photos and make sure they are entered in the correct classes. Just remember to check your Champ show photos when they come back, too! As for the breed classes, the Breed Directory is a guideline to use as to where each breed should go. However, you have the option to choose a different class if you wish. Keep in mind, though, that the judge has the final say in which class the model is judged in. Please do not put more than one class in each section (e.g. class 51 and/or class 52b for your roan sabino – just pick one) Good luck to everyone at the Champ show and in the new season!! -- Carolyn Bailey Breed Directory update!
