All lots are offered subject to Morton & Eden Ltd.’s Conditions of Business and to reserves.

Estimates are published as a guide only and are subject to review. The actual hammer price of a lot may well be higher or lower than the range of figures given and there are no fixed “starting prices”.

A Buyer’s Premium of 15% is applicable to all lots in this sale. Excepting lots sold under ‘Temporary Import’ rules which are marked with the symbol ‡ (see below), the Buyer’s Premium is subject to VAT at the standard rate (currently 17½%). Lots are offered for sale under the auctioneer’s margin scheme and VAT on the Buyer’s Premium is payable by all buyers.

Lots marked with the symbol ‡ have been imported from outside the European Union (EU) to be sold at auction under Temporary Importation Rules. When released to buyers within the EU, including the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay import VAT at the rate of 5% on both the hammer price and the Buyer’s Premium. In effect this means that the invoice total for most EU buyers, including the Buyer’s Premium, will be at the level of the hammer price + 20.75% (i.e just over 3% higher than the rate of 17.625% which typically applies to lots sold under the domestic Auctioneer’s Margin VAT scheme). Buyers outside the EU will not be required to pay temporary import VAT provided that satisfactory documentary evidence of exportation is obtained. Further information on this matter is available on request.

Morton & Eden Ltd. will be pleased to execute bids on behalf of those clients unable to attend the sale in person, subject to our Conditions of Business. All bids must be submitted in writing in good time and lots will always be purchased as cheaply as possible (depending on any other bids received, reserves and competition in the saleroom). This service is offered free of charge.

Morton & Eden Ltd. can supply quotations for the shipping of purchases, including transit insurance and VAT refund administration fees, and will assist in the application for any export licences which may be required. Buyers are reminded that it is their responsibility to comply with UK export regulations and with any local import requirements.

Payment Instructions

Payment is due in sterling at the conclusion of the sale and before purchases can be released. Please note that we require seven days to clear sterling cheques unless special arrangements have been made in advance of the sale. We are pleased to accept major credit cards, for which a surcharge will be made of 3% of the transaction total. There is no charge for payments made by debit card.

The Property of a Gentleman

GOLD NOBLES AND THEIR CONTINENTAL IMITATIONS, c. 1350-1600 Representing the principal issues of English nobles, ryals and their various derivative types, this fine group of 50 coins has been assembled by a North American collector over a period of twelve years. For a full account of the medal’s long and costly development, including reference to Küchler, see the appendix to J.G. Pollard, ‘Matthew Boulton and Conrad Heinrich Küchler’ in the Numismatic Chronicle (1970).

This and the following lot were given by Matthew Robinson Boulton to James Watt the Engineer (or, possibly, to his widow) and to James Watt Junior. They are known to have been transferred in 1849 from Aston Hall to Doldowlod, where they were displayed and, at one time, incorrectly described as “gold” in an inventory of the Watt Collection. It may be noted that the shells are – unusually – gilt on both the interiors and exteriors, emphasising their special significance. Both pieces were included in Sotheby’s catalogue The James Watt Sale – Art & Science, London, 20 March 2003, lots 41 and 42. See also Morton & Eden auction, 13 November 2002, lots 267 and 268 for companion pieces in copper.

Eight-year old Daniel Cooper (elder son of the Speaker, Sir Daniel), ‘placed in the cavity of the foundation stone a metal box containing a variety of coins and also the case and coins taken from the foundation of the old house’ before handing a silver trowel to Sir William Denison. On spreading the mortar the Governor is reported to have said, “I lay this the first stone…with my best wishes that the house may prove as solid as the foundation upon which it rests.” Unfortunately, this was not to be the case. Woollahra House was demolished in 1929, and the original contents of this box have been long since dispersed. Further information is included with the lot in a typescript copy of The Story of Point Piper by Woollahra Municipal Council, 1970, and in Pioneer Families of Australia – The Coopers, taken from The Home, October 1932.
