Job Title: Journals Manager

Grade: 7

Salary: £30,738- £37,768 plus £2,948 London Allowance per annum

Period of appointment: Open ended

Reports to: Publishing Manager

Location: Library Services, UCL Press

Hours of work: Full time post at 36.5 Hours per week (1FTE)

General description of post:

This newly created role within UCL Press will have responsibility for overseeing UCL Press’s two Open Access journal portfolios: UCL Press’s published academic journals, hosted on Ingenta Connect and other journals platforms, and UCL’s student journals, hosted on Open Journal Systems (OJS). The Journals Manager will act as the main point of contact for all UCL Press journal editors, including editors wishing to start a new journal with the Press, or to migrate an existing title to UCL Press. The Journals Manager will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the process of managing a journal, from commissioning new journals through peer review and online publication, will review and evaluate new journal proposals and present them to the UCL Press Editorial Boards, and will be able to support journal editors and authors in all aspects of editing, publishing and promoting their journals. The Journals Manager will also manage contracts with platform providers, oversee journal budgets, and will draw up contracts with new journal editors. All UCL Press books and journals are published in open access, therefore a thorough understanding of open access journal publishing and APCs is essential. The Journals Manager will also develop and manage a new service to provide charged open access journal publishing to non-UCL journals.

Main responsibilities:

• To have operational responsibility for all aspects of UCL Press journals • To act as the main point of contact for all UCL Press journal editors • To lead for UCL Press in CrossRef liaison; to ensure the appropriate application of DOIs across both journals services • To maintain and monitor SLAs with both platform providers and to maintain a strong level of service provision and value for money • To collaborate with other UCL Press staff regarding the commissioning, production and promotion of all UCL Press journals • To acquire new journals

UCL Press – Academic Journals • To manage all interactions between UCL Press and Ingenta Connect, and other online journal platforms, including research into new platforms and assessment of service and value for money • To act as the main point of liaison with journal editors to ensure the smooth running and publication of the UCL Press academic journals • To oversee the quality of the published journals and their adherence to appropriate peer review processes

• To manage the timely publication of the journals, assisting with uploading to the journals platform, and creating the online issue • To oversee the editorial and typesetting process for articles, in conjunction with the UCL Press Managing Editor • To review new journals proposals, to develop them with the relevant editor as necessary, and to present them to the UCL Press Editorial Board for approval to publish under the UCL Press imprint • To manage the journals budgets and review on a regular basis with the UCL Press Editorial Board to determine policies on contributions and APCs • To draw up contracts with new journal editors • To monitor and report on usage statistics, download statistics and other relevant metrics for the UCL Press journal titles and articles • To promote the UCL Press journal publishing services and seek out new journals • To work closely with the UCL Press Marketing Manager and journal editors to promote the journals widely

Student Journals - OJS • To liaise with the designated provider to manage the hosting of OJS, including backup, upgrades, technical support, customisation and service enhancements • To support new student journal editors in the process of editing and publishing a journal, and in the use of OJS • To review proposals for new student journals, evaluating in particular the potential longevity of the journal, the commitment to the appropriate level of quality assurance, including peer review, and the level of academic support from the relevant UCL department • To implement, maintain and contribute to an online experience-sharing and feedback forum for the editors of UCL student journals • To monitor use of the service and report on a regular basis to relevant UCL Press Editorial Boards, including download statistics of student journals • To assist with the migration of new journals to the UCL Press OJS platform • To draw up agreements with student journal editors to determine each party’s area of responsibility • To promote the student journal publishing service widely within UCL, and to publicise its outputs and achievements, via blogs, social media, articles, talks and events

Other duties:

To carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager, the Assistant Director, senior staff acting as Duty Officer or the Director of UCL Library Services.
