JOHN CHURCH JULY 21, 2019 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor’s Column Saints John and Paul are the next on the first list in the Roman Canon. They are not John, apostle and evangelist (and our patron) or Paul, the author of many letters from the Christian scriptures, both of whom lived in the first century AD. In fact, they both lived and died about 300 years after those great saints. They are likely the most recent martyrs in these lists. John and Paul are always mentioned together. They may have been brothers. Some suggest that they were former soldiers or even eunuchs who were in the employ of Constantina, the daughter of the Emperor Constantine the Great. Little is known for sure except that they were martyred in the city of Rome around the year 382. This was during the reign of Julian II who earned the nickname “Julian the Apostate”. Since the Edict of Milan granting tolerance of Christianity in the early part of the fourth century, the imperial cult of Rome and the worship of the traditional Rome gods had declined. So had the fortunes of the Roman Empire. When Julian became emperor, he sought to return the Empire to traditional Roman values and religious practice. He generally used other methods than religious persecution by torture and execution, but, according to the tradition, somehow John and Paul ran afoul of him regarding their Christian faith and he had them beheaded. They were buried in a house on the Caelian Hill, one of the famous seven hills of Rome. There is no clear evidence as to why they were buried there although there is one tradition that they owned the house and their execution took place there. (Still an odd idea. Who would want to bury someone in their house?) A church was built over this house near the end of the fourth century, a version of which still stands today, Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio. This fact was forgotten until the priest rector of the basilica decided to do some excavations under the church during the late 1800s. He found the wellpreserved remains of five buildings that the church was built over dating from the first to the fourth century. They are decorated with important and interesting frescoes, while the original tomb of Saints John and Paul is covered with paintings of which the martyrs are the subject. The rooms and the tomb form one of the most important early Christian memorials in Rome. Once again, the details of their lives are less important than the fact that they died for Christ. The fact that, from very early on, they were venerated in this place and continue to be today, tells us how beloved they were and are. Their feast is June 26. Fr.
