DERBY BOROUGH TRANSPORT HISTORICAL FLEET LIST This list is not complete - Please email any additions or corrections to this list - thanks! Some notes on Derby's fleet numbering may be helpful. The prewar motorbus series reached 73, and the first wartime utility bus (a solitary Bristol K) took the fleet number 74. The series then reverted to 1, with 1-21 being Daimler and Guy utilities. By 1949, however, the new series was 'catching up' with the earlier prewar numbers, hence the jump from 41 to 75 to avoid duplication. This series then continued right up to 315, delivered in 1981; lowheight double deckers and coaches were numbered in separate series, as were the four Daimlers acquired secondhand from Halifax. A new series for new-generation double deckers was begun in 1978 by Foden NC number 101. Trolleybuses followed on from the tram series, with the first one (79) arriving in 1932; the series then continued unbroken to 243 of 1960. The motorbus series nearly caught up with the trolleybus numbers in 1966, but the complete withdrawal of trolleybus services in 1967 eliminated this problem. Trolleybuses F/No Reg. PDF Booklet: 069-2 2 Felix Motors Ltd. 1921-1976 When Ernest Parish began running on a route between Doncaster and Armthorpe in 1921, it was already well served by other operators. Operating out of a garage on East Lane Stainforth, the company was named after a well-known cartoon character of the time (Felix the Cat), and for some time a cartoon image was used as an emblem on the side of the vehicles. In 1925 a licence was granted to operate a service to Thorne and Moorends via Edenthorpe and Hatfield, which probably prompted the removal of the firm from Stainforth (after permission to operate via that village was refused) to a newly constructed depot in Park Lane, Hatfield in 1930. The new service was operated jointly with a number of other concerns, including Renown, which was taken over by Felix in 1941 along with three vehicles.

  • Blue Cars Became an Important Part of the Tale
Produced in March 2020 during the COV19 pandemic as a pdf for downloading, this is an updated version of the original edition of 2013. There are only a few updates and therefore no plans to reprint the book. However, if you would like a printed copy of the original, a few copies may be available. The update was one of the last projects on which my good friend and co-author Peter Greaves was working when he suddenly and tragically suffered an acute stroke that left him severely disabled. I have finished the job on his behalf. Several of the authors, not least Peter, and our good friend Mark Senior of MDS Books have had family members hit by cancer and a donation to the Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester would be kind. Thank you. The updates are in red text so that they are more easily found. The pages affected are: Page 9 Beccols’ start up funding Page 27 Ford ET corrected to “English Truck” Page 36 An extra Ford coach (with picture) Page 83 Bodies for the Dennis Storks Page 90 Front design of the two Sharrock coaches Page 91 Payment of creditors in full Page 95 The demise of BHW Page 100 Build totals amended Page 103 EK 8203 not a new body Page 107 JTF 840 Crossley added Page 113 EK 8203 added as rebody Page 123 Ford UEV 2 added Page 125 HTD 260 added (with picture) Michael Eyre, March 2020 the complete story of the coachbuilders Beccols & Bellhouse Hartwell & how Blue Cars became an important part of the tale THIS PICTURE Ready to go to the United States and resplendent in the dark red livery of St Christopher Travel Service of New York with gold anodised trim, the first of the Beccols-bodied Royal Tigers for Blue Cars is inspected by Blue Cars director Robert Langton, brother of Ted Langton, and publicity manager T G Davies.

Phil Thoms’ detailed interest in the subject is obvious and the collection of photographs amassed from the surviving Massey archive, and from a wide variety of other sources, provides a wonderful record of the output and the many once well-known customers, with evocative colour illustrations of many of them. A body list of all known vehicles built provides an invaluable reference. 128 PIKES LANE GLOSSOP DERBYSHIRE SK13 8EH (01457 861508 E-MAIL [email protected] INTERNET www.venturepublications.co.uk ISBN 978 1905 304 43 1 £25.00 Phil Thoms case cover.indd 1 21/12/2020 14:25:18 INSIDE FRONT COVER END PAPER - UN-NUMBERED PHOTOGRAPHIC CREDITS The photographs used throughout this book have been accumulated over many years by the Author and his colleagues. PDF-073-1 Page 2 Marfleet’s Coaches Ltd. 1960-1982 Although the short 22 year history of Marfleet's Coaches began in 1960, when Marfleet and Son, described as car proprietors, of Binbrook, Lincolnshire, began operating coaches on private hire and school contract journeys, the Marfleet involvement in local transport goes back to the turn of the century. The lack of a railway connection serving Binbrook meant that, at the turn of the century, carriers' carts were the main lifeline for the village. These carts provided a regular service between Binbrook and nearby towns, such as Grimsby, Louth, Market Rasen and Caistor, with the local housewives entrusting their shopping lists to certain carriers.

PDF-028-1 2 Rochdale Corporation Transport 1902 - 1969 Fleet History 1902-1969 Horse buses are recorded serving Rochdale as early as 1796, when a twice-weekly horse-drawn coach to Manchester, via the neighbouring town of Bury, was withdrawn due to lack of patronage. In 1824 the 'Royal Mail' passenger coach ran nightly, continuing on to Halifax, Bradford, Leeds and York. Early records of horsebuses in Rochdale are from 1856 onwards, but by 1870 a number of horsebus services were operating, mainly from local hotels, such as; from the Spread Eagle, Cheetham Street to Bacup 6 times daily; from the Roebuck, Yorkshire Street to Heywood and Bury 3 times daily; and from the White Hart, St. Mary's Gate to Norden, Smallbridge and Littleborough 3 times daily.

PDF-178-1 Page 2 Associated Equipment Company Ltd 1912-1979 The Associated Equipment Company Ltd A Brief History 1912-1979 The origins of the Associated Equipment Company Limited, better known by its initials as AEC, lie with the London General Omnibus Company (LGOC). The LGOC was set up in 1855 in order to amalgamate the plethora of horse-bus operators in London. In July 1908 the LGOC merged with the London Omnibus Company (which, at the time, was operating a fleet of almost 400 motorbuses under the fleetname 'Vanguard'). The London Omnibus Company had set up a subsidiary, Motor Omnibus Construction Limited, based in premises at Walthamstow, in order to assemble its own vehicles from parts manufactured elsewhere. Shortly after the two Companies had merged, the Chief Engineer suggested that the LGOC should also design and manufacture its own chassis at the works in Walthamstow.
