Sophisticated and Sharp... One of the Best, Robust Listening Experiences.” - Rolling Stone DAVID LYTTLE “SOPHISTICATED AND SHARP... ONE OF THE BEST, ROBUST LISTENING EXPERIENCES.” - ROLLING STONE David Lyttle is a MOBO-nominated Irish musician, recording artist, songwriter, jazz drummer, producer and record label owner! Lyttle was born and lives in Northern Ireland. Music is truly a family affair, Lyttle began performing as a member of the Lyttle Family band from the age of four, playing folk and classical music until his teens. Lyttle honed his musical skills across drums, percussion, cello, keyboards, bass and vocals. At age 14 Lyttle kick-started his DJ career on the Northern Irish club circuit. Aged 19 he became a solo artist, it was also at this age he discovered the great jazz artists, who would become his greatest influence. This was a pre-YouTube time so, people really had to make an effort to discover music genres and artists. Lyttle cites his genre influences as jazz, hip hop, soul, classical, pop and folk and music artists as, Art Blakey, Q-Tip and Dr John who he appreciates for their strong vibes. to launch in 2017. “ART BLAKEY HAS MOST INFLUENCED MY JAZZ DRUMMING. MY STUDIO PROJECTS ARE INFLUENCED BY SO MANY PEOPLE…J DILLA COMES TO MIND IMMEDIATELY WHEN I THINK OF MY HIP-HOP ELEMENTS” - DAVID LYTTLE Lyttle bolstered his already comprehensive musical-life experience with academic qualifications. He received scholarships to study at Skidmore Jazz Institute (New York) and the Banff Centre (Canada), whilst also studying for a BMus at the University of Ulster, where he also became a doctor of music in 2009. Lyttle released his first solo album, True Story, on his newly formed label Lyte Records in 2007. Over the next five years he would feature a long list of international jazz icons in his touring bands. In 2012, Lyttle branched out into hip-hop and soul, and released his second album Interlude, which earned him an international reputation as a producer and songwriter. The following year he released the dance track, ‘Celebrate’ with vocalist Rhea Lyttle, Northern Irish recording artist Duke Special and Beat Carnival percussionists, a Belfast arts organisation where he was the Musician-In-Residence. The track was on the playlists of the major commercial radio stations in Ireland. A natural collaborator, Lyttle explores and mixes things up musically with explosive fusions in recent years. Lyttle’s third album, Faces features collaborations with hip-hop visionary Talib Kweli, Grammy winning saxophone icon Joe Lovano, Duke Special, forward-thinking British vocalists, Cleveland Watkiss, Rhea Lyttle, Anne Lyttle and Jan Hutchinson; rappers Illspokinn, Homecut and Zane to name a few. Faces is Lyttle’s most diverse, wide-reaching and critically acclaimed album to date. “...EXTRAORDINARY...“ - TIME OUT “...CLASSY...SLICK...EXCEPTIONAL...” - MOBO (ON ‘FACES’) Lyttle has successfully toured the festival circuit, performing across Europe at London Jazz Festival, Love Supreme, Beethoven Festival, Germany, Festival Django Reinhardt, France, Jazzkarr, Talinn, Cork Jazz Festival, Noumea Jazz Festival, South Pacific. While he enjoys the vibe of large venues, he also enjoys the intimacy of performances in clubs and theatres. Lyttle has also made radio and TV appearances around the globe. Currently Lyttle is promoting Faces with his eclectic seven-piece live band, as well as touring with the David Lyttle Trio (jazz) featuring saxophonist Tom Harrison. He is also the 2015 Musician-In-Residence at the Nerve Centre, Derry. In November Lyttle released the collaborative roots album, Say & Do with Northern Irish singer/ songwriter VerseChorusVerse. The album went to No. 1 in the Amazon UK blues chart, with top 40 chart placements on iTunes UK and Ireland. SHREWSBURY SCHOOL Music & Arts 58th Season September 2014 to July 2015 1 2 Welcome Welcome to the 58th Season of the Performing Arts at Shrewsbury School. This is a momentous year for the School, as we welcome our first 13- and 14-year-old girls in September 2014. We look forward to the many advantages that full co-education will bring to the School, not least further strength and enhancement to our musical and theatrical performances. Our own school concerts and plays are at the heart of the season, at which we celebrate the many talents of current pupils. Galin Ganchev, who has entranced audiences during his time at Shrewsbury with his dazzling piano playing, will give an evening recital and will also perform Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the School Orchestra. There is a wonderful chance to hear some of our talented young performers at the Wigmore Hall in London in February, and to hear the Chapel Choir singing Evensong at two of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in the country. At the heart of the first part of our series lies Dr Charles Burney, one of Shrewsbury School’s greatest sons, writer, author, composer, traveller and friend to many 18th century luminaries. 2014 is the Bicentenary of his death, and the Salomon Quartet will lead the commemorations of his long and productive life. The St Cecilia Weekend concerts celebrate Burney and his times, and will include a fascinating illustrated lecture on the man himself. Our Community Choir will also join with pupil choristers and soloists to perform Mozart’s wonderful C Major Mass, the Missa Longa.

  • IGRC Conference 18Th - 23Rd March 2016
IGRC Conference 18th - 23rd March 2016 Abstracts and Biographies SATURDAY 19th MARCH 2016 Session 1 – 9.00 am to 10.30 am Papers in TB18 Benjamin Bruant (IGRC, University of Surrey) Andrès Segovia’s collaboration with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (MCT): Case study - Passacaglia opus 180 The Passacaglia, opus 180, was composed by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco in 1956 and is dedicated to Andrès Segovia, who never played or recorded it. The score was published in 1970 by Berben, a publishing house which had never previously worked with Andrès Segovia. The score was revised and fingered in 1968 by the guitarist and musicologist Angelo Gilardino. We can therefore question if Segovia had any influence on the piece, during the compositional, editing or publication process. When the immediate answer would seem to be that Segovia’s influence on the piece is limited or even non-existent, the newly discovered correspondences between the composer and the guitarist refute this hypothesis. This case study, based on analysis of the manuscript score as well as study of the correspondences between Segovia and MCT, aims to define the role of Segovia in the compositional process, to question the value of the publication of the Passacaglia and to assess the importance of historical information contained in the MCT/Segovia correspondences. Born in Le Havre (France), Benjamin Bruant began his musical study at the age of seven in his hometown. After getting a bachelor degree in Physics, he moved to Paris in order to improve his music knowledge. He studied with Pedro Ibanez at the Conservatoire Nationale de Region of Paris for three years.

Over the last one hundred years, jazz performance in Dublin has represented contrasting values for different people. What has remained consistent is the notion of participation within a network of musicians, audience members, promotors and institutions that make up a scene. To participate in a scene is to be actively involved in contestation and negotiation as individuals and groups seek to create meaning and identity through jazz performance.

  • Orlando Le Fleming Bio and Discography
ORLANDO LE FLEMING Among the most proficient and accomplished bassists in the field of contemporary jazz, Orlando le Fleming's virtuoso technique, boundless creativity and powerful beat are those of a musician who has found himself, humbly, occupying a space in the uppermost stratum of American improvised music. Orlando's facility as an improviser and capacity as a team player were first honed not on the bandstand, nor in the practice room, but on the cricket pitch. Originally from the UK, Orlando seemed destined for an athletic career, and was briefly a professional cricketer, until he was granted a place at London’s Royal Academy of music, and his lifelong passion for music won out. Le Fleming's 2003 move to New York City was a timely one. Soon after arriving stateside, Orlando joined Jane Monheit's band, consequently sharing the bass duties on her 2004 release Taking a Chance on Love with Ron Carter and Christian McBride; the year following, he recorded with jazz legend Jimmy Cobb on his Marsalis Music Honors release. In the years since, leaders as diverse as Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Charlap, Billy Cobham, Ari Hoenig, Seamus Blake, Jeff “Tain” Watts and David Sanchez have relied on Le Fleming's firm beat and eloquent counterpoint to propel their rhythm sections forward. While he succeeds as a sideman, it is as a leader that Orlando le Fleming truly shines. From Brooklyn With Love is a living document of Orlando's original compositions, as performed by his 2010 quartet. Recorded in concert at storied Park Slope hangout Freddy's, it features saxophonist Will Vinson, guitarist Lage Lund, and drummer Antonio Sanchez.

SLIGO INTERNATIONAL Jazz festival 16-21 July 2013 www.sligojazz.ie Booking (Hawk’s Well Theatre) Tel: 071 916 1518 or online www.hawkswell.com A style of music, native to America, characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic understructure zz: with solo and ensemble improvisations on basic Ja tunes and chord patterns and, more recently, a highly sophisticated harmonic idiom. The term “Jazz” is often misunderstood in these parts as being associated with Dixieland, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, or closer to home, Paddy Cole or Sligo’s musical heroes The Jazz Ladds. All the above are worthy representatives of certain strands of jazz music, but there is so much more music out there that should be called jazz: the musical idiom has grown and expanded exponentially since its New Orleans origins in the early 20th century with the infiltration of musical influences from all over the world. In the last couple of decades a great new wave of jazz has grown throughout USA and Europe. In many ways Europe has taken over as the hub of cutting edge modern music, much of which could be described as jazz. Perhaps “Modern Music” is a better definition of this new jazz. In the spirit of Miles Davis it dares to evolve past traditional jazz boundaries by bringing rock, pop, R&B and world music influences into the mix, creating and inspiring new musicians for the 21st century. Sligo Jazz Project is a volunteer-run organization set up in 2005 by myself and other Sligo musicians, to promote jazz education and performance in the Sligo area.
